I absolutely adored this book. Every single one of the characters was likable and they all felt real. I adored the premise of this store and am quite glad to say that the plot did not disappoint. Lincoln was a very interesting and likable main character and I often found myself smiling or even laughing at Beth and Jennifer's emails because they're hilarious and have the best stories. This was such a wonderful book and has just grow my love for Rainbow Rowell's writing even more. ...more

What I found particularly noteworthy about this book is the fact that it includes emails that do not have to do with the main character, Lincoln. Usually, in novels, the correspondences tend to involve the main character. Lincoln is an IT I love this book! This article is a book discussion, not a book review. What I found particularly noteworthy about this book is the fact that it includes emails that do not have to do with the main character, Lincoln. Usually, in novels, the correspondences tend to involve the main character. Lincoln is an IT tech worker who oversees red-flagged emails and is supposed to inform the employees who wrote flagged emails that a notation was made in their files. However, he never red-flags Beth or Jennifer.
The fact that none of the emails involve him is really interesting to me because it is almost voyeuristic in a sense. Lincoln is reading these two women email back and forth, being privy to their inner-most thoughts, without them knowing. Since it is his job to flag content that may be not work-related or appropriate, it is not as though he is being intrusive, but simply doing his job. In stories with letters, the main character鈥檚 name is mentioned; they pen the letter, or await one to arrive. Lincoln is simply reading emails, yet the story progresses nicely.
The other fascinating element of their email correspondence was the fact that Jen and Beth know each other extraordinarily well. The women are very personal and detailed in their writing. These emails are uncensored and rather private in nature, so Lincoln gets to know Beth and Jennifer on a very personal level even though they do not know him. If Beth met Lincoln at a bar (which he would never be at because he plays Dungeons & Dragons on Saturday nights), they would not have these personal discussions whereas in these emails, he is reading all about their lives. He is able to get to know Beth and Jennifer on a deeper level without them knowing. This book is also a modern epistolary novel because people do not write letters today. Rather than the Jane Austen era in which characters waited weeks to months to receive a letter, Attachments has an instantaneous email back and forth element. In this manner, the conversations become more personal and ongoing. The characters write back and forth, allowing further insight into whatever is being discussed in that moment. Jennifer is able to respond within minutes, keeping the conversation going.
As a reader, I also appreciated the fact that Lincoln had feelings for Beth before he saw her. The book was published in 1999; there was no Facebook, Twitter, or online account where he could have looked her up. He does not know nor does he have a method of finding out what she looks like unless he meets her in person. In the emails, Lincoln sees what a good friend Beth is to Jennifer, makes him laugh in her emails, and is drawn to her for all the right reasons. It makes me appreciate him and their potential romance so much more.
In regards to characterization, Lincoln is multi-dimensional. His last girlfriend truly left him heartbroken. He thought she was 鈥渢he one鈥� and when she broke up with him, he was devastated. As someone who reads for characterization and emotional growth, I was really drawn to the element of his personality. I loved reading his emotional growth over the course of the narrative.
The literary value of this novel really stood out to me. I highly recommend this book for so many reasons. The main character, Lincoln, is very likeable and relatable, the romance is well developed, the characterizations are clear and well executed, the writing is brilliant, and the email correspondences differentiated this novel from other books on the shelf. I have read quite a few novels that involve emails and the fact that the emails do not involve the protagonist is very intriguing to me. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

Lincoln is your typical IT nerd. He is shy but sweet, kind and caring. Lincoln's job is to read his companies email filter to ensure that all emails are company related. One day Lincoln finds an Email from Beth and Jennifer, which takes Lincoln on a journey to discover if love before first sight is possible.

Attachments was so adorable and cute that I just couldn't get enough of it. I actually read this during the holiday I just had in America and I couldn't put it down. It is the perfect summer time read and is really great if you are in a mourning period because of all the cute and light content. I really enjoyed this book. I liked how you heard from all of the characters. I believe that this book was hyped up maybe a little too much, but other than that I did enjoy the story. Keep in mind that you do know the story will end (it's pretty predictable), but it was fun seeing how it got there. All in all, I really liked this book. ...more
