I'm so glad I reread this before the movie comes out. I think this was the first dystopian book I read, and that was in 2008. I liked it then, but I loved it this time. It's amazing to me to see how many writers have been influenced by this story whether intentionally or not. So many dystopian books mimic this story or themes from this story. Hmm. I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars. This was a wonderful book, and really the only reason I can justify 4 stars is because the ending came too soon and was too abrupt. I really would have loved more pages and more resolution to the story. But if you read Lowry's Newbery Acceptance Speech (which is included at the back of this particular edition of the book), she offers a bit of an explanation for the ending, and she provides a wonderful insight into the creation of the story.

Read in two sittings; suspect the target group would be impacted like I was with early scifi. Finished it and had to reread the ending because I wasn't sure what happened... but the ambiguity is part of the story. Woke up thinking about it... so I've given in an extra star :) Review to follow.

I read this years ago, and just re-read it, preparing study questions for one of my homeschooled daughters.
If you love Matched, or The Hunger Games, you will probably love this book, which came way before both, and may have inspired those books. It's tightly written, fast-paced, and keeps a reader riveted. ...more
