I've read Rebecca before, but it has been many years. When I read it as a teenager or young woman (I don't remember for sure how old I was), it was about pure enjoyment. Du Maurier can really elicit that gothic sensibility and build such internal suspense through atmosphere alone. Although the story has no actual ghosts, the characters are haunted nonetheless.

I enjoyed reading this book. I loved Daphne du Maurier’s ability to shift the prose from sweet to angry all dependent of the needs of the scene. He used each and every word to its 10th power. I could hear the authors voice, tone, and very formal diction. Each character has a secret; each character is worried about what everyone else will think. I followed the breadcrumbs of this story to the very end and came out surprised. Wonderful read.

I can't believe it too me so long to experience this engrossing story. Daphne du Maurier is a master at creating atmosphere. It's a psychological thriller with a ghost, a Gothic setting, creepy characters, and a wild imagination coupled with a bit of paranoia. I listened to the Audible recording read by Anna Massey. Like so many people, "Rebecca" is one of my favorite books of all time! I don't even have to think twice about giving five stars I wish I could give it more than that. Daphne du Maurier was a brillant author. This novel has everything; romance, suspense, drama and wit. The book plays on our emotions and gets to readers on levels that few books can. Everyone should give this book a chance, no matter what their taste.
