Well... wasn't that an experience? I really wanted to love this book, not only because I adore Stephanie Perkins, but also because I've never read anything of this genre before and was fully prepared to be wowed. But all I got out of this was the feelings no of being severely underwhelmed. I am SO DISAPPOINTED.

I don't think I can say much more without spoilers but what I will say is that as always I enjoyed the writing style and the storytelling, as I knew I would because... I don't think I can say much more without spoilers but what I will say is that as always I enjoyed the writing style and the storytelling, as I knew I would because... Hello, it's Stephanie Perkins. As seen by the fact I read the majority of this book in only a few sittings, despite its shortcomings I was thoroughly invested in this book whilst reading which is why it got its 3 star rating though I'm unsure if I've been a bit too generous with that oops!

All I will say though is don't go into this book expecting a thriller. It's just not.

(view spoiler)[ I think the thing I was most underwhelmed by in this book was the killer. For me David was revealed WAY too early and as an audience we had no real connection to him. I felt like we were robbed of our "OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE IT'S THEM!" moment. There was no shock factor, nothing that would really make me remember this book. To be honest I was convinced the killer was going to be Alex all the way to the end when she called Makani and Ollie to pick her up because of her panic attack. And as predictable as I think that outcome would have been, it still would have been shocking. It was that shock factor that let the side down for this book.

Another thing I was extremely underwhelmed by was Makani's back story. Stephanie did such a good job at building up this secretive past and hinting at something terrible that had happened. So much so that I was actually more invested in Makani's subplot than the main murder plot. I was so excited when she finally got to the reveal all, only to deflate at the outcome. ...She cut someone's ponytail off... REALLY?!... That's IT???! Fucking hell I thought she'd killed someone. It was such a let down.

Okay, now what to say about that fucking mess of an ending eh? I'm not gonna lie, throughout the whole of that end sequence I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I lost tabs on who was dead and who was alive, lost count of how stabs wounds were collected, and decided to let go my curiosity over how David managed to keep on his feet after taking a good few batterings. It seems he can magically heal or something, hmmmm? In short the ending did not have the impact I think Stephanie was aiming for. I felt no tension, no fear, no anticipation. I was confident Makani would make it out alive and I really didn't care all that much about whether the others did or not. In fact I was a little disappointed when it turned out that BOTH Darby and Ollie made it out alive. Do stabbing someone to the chest mean nothing anymore?

Just as an endnote, I think David's excuse for his killings was such a cop out. I didn't feel like it was much of a reason at all, I don't care if he's a psychopath. It didn't make sense, and it was never explained WHY he was so against his peers leaving Osbourne. How did it affect him in any way? I feel it would have been better if Stephanie had gone down the bullying route after all. And after all this I still don't really understand why Makani was bunged onto the kill list when she was never really from Osbourne in the first place. And was it ever explained for what reason Rodrigo would've let town??? Maybe I missed it.

To end on a slightly more positive note, I did genuinely enjoy Makani and Ollie's relationship. It was my favourite part of the book and I though their romance was something new and refreshing if a little cringed at times. But hey, I easily forgive a lot of things when it comes to romance. Overall while I enjoyed myself reading this and at times was extremely grossed out, I was just expecting so much more from one of my favourite authors. ...more
