Whoa, this was intense! And a lot more violent than what I expected--not in a bad way, though. I felt uncomfortable reading some scenes, but overall this was a refreshing read.

I suppose that the world of the Curse Workers series is some kind of alternate reality where everything is just like our world except some people, the Workers, have extraordinary abilities--some can kill you with a single touch, others can transform you into something else, others can take away your memories, and so on. Ho Whoa, this was intense! And a lot more violent than what I expected--not in a bad way, though. I felt uncomfortable reading some scenes, but overall this was a refreshing read.

I suppose that the world of the Curse Workers series is some kind of alternate reality where everything is just like our world except some people, the Workers, have extraordinary abilities--some can kill you with a single touch, others can transform you into something else, others can take away your memories, and so on. Honestly, I got the feeling that their world was just like ours but with a scary twist--and where everybody wears gloves all the time.

I liked Cassel, the hero and narrator. My heart bled for him constantly. Thank goodness at least Grandad was always there for him, and later on, Sam and Daneca--and Lila--, because the poor boy has some serious family issues, I mean, those brothers, grrr! I WANTED TO SLAP THEM OVER AND OVER ACROSS THE FACE! Bastards! I'm still not sure about the mother. No doubt she has a twisted mind, and, hello, used to take little Cassel with her to perform all sorts of shenanigans (CRIMES), but no way she's worse than the sh*tty brothers.
One thing is for sure though, all these people, this "family", mother and brothers, always treated Cassel as some kind of tool they can easily pick up and use in their schemes, and cons--AGAIN, CRIMES--, and don't even bother to treat him with one tiny bit of respect, and that's so f*cked up I can't even. For crying out loud, he's a kid. See why my heart kept bleeding for him??

The romance. It's funny because Cassel is a beta, and Lila is a kinky alpha, and I was always on the edge of my seat when she was in a scene because you never know what she'll do or say. Cassel's fascination for her makes the whole thing even more entertaining. So yeah, they're a good match, although it looks like their story is gonna be tough and I'm wondering if I'm up for that kind of drama. BUT I guess I can handle it, as long as there isn't a love triangle lurking somewhere, waiting to poke poke poke my patience until I scream... please don't, Curse Workers. Don't.

So yes, this was good! And did I mention this was my first Holly Black book? Yep! And I'm impressed! ...more

This book was very interesting with it's tale of curse workers. It was a new and exciting take on...magic I guess. Where by touching someone, some people (very few) have the power to make you feel something, change your memories (INCEPTION!), make you dream (INCEPTION SQUARED), give you luck, kill you or transform objects living and or not living. AMAZING start to a new series by HOLLY BLACK! I loved her Tithe series, and this is 100% different and just as good! I love her style in all of her books! I love the Characters! she really lets you get to know them, unlike a lot of authors I have read. I recommend this series all the way!!!
