A sweet story told with some good humor. The characters are nicely drawn. The story explores a number of interesting themes well--family, fatherhood, racism, second generation immigrants--wrapped in a late life love story.

I liked this book a lot! It was just such a cute story! I loved the Major, and how he is such a prim and proper gentleman, but ends up with such an unconventional story. I was a bit worried in the beginning that the story would be all about his guns, which it wasn't. It was funny, because I identified a lot more with the major than with his son, who is close to my age. It made me really dislike the younger generation, and ironically enough, Americans. :) Highly recommend!

Major Pettigrew is a widow living in the village of Edgecomb St. Mary. After his brother dies he strikes up a friendship with the local, widowed Pakistani shopkeeper, Mrs. Ali. A really enjoyed the relationship between the Major and Mrs. Ali. This is a charming book with a good moral about class and racism.

A good book that could have been great -- my complete review is at
