This novel is about a man who grows up in a pre-industrial world and is slowly destroyed by modernity. Similar theme as that found in the stories of Alistair MacLeod. Moisan is also a stand-in for traditional, old Quebec itself, pushed from a rural, Catholic, French, conservative bubble into a mechanized, bilingual (or even anglicized), urban age where the Church has lost its magic (though, perhaps, not yet its power).
