Horror.
You're left with an overwhelming feeling of horror and sadness through most of this book. The constant theme of death and torture is tough to take, but the humanity Ondaatje shows us makes it work reading through. The non-stop violence on all sides in Sri Lanka is the setting for this book, and Anil, our title character, is an expatriate who has become a forensic anthropologist.
