Since I downloaded Torment to my nook immediately after finishing Fallen, this review is for both. It鈥檚 interesting to read some of the mixed reviews for this series. Those who don鈥檛 like it really, really don鈥檛 seem to like it. I understand some of the points that were made, but personally, I liked both books a lot. They鈥檙e different, and I鈥檓 looking forward to Passion. Here鈥檚 why鈥�

First, the books made me think. I like a YA novel that doesn鈥檛 talk down to the reader. Those who don鈥檛 like it really, really don鈥檛 seem to like it. I understand some of the points that were made, but personally, I liked both books a lot. They鈥檙e different, and I鈥檓 looking forward to Passion. Here鈥檚 why鈥�

First, the books made me think. I like a YA novel that doesn鈥檛 talk down to the reader. I enjoy having to read between the lines and puzzle out some of the possibilities along with the protagonist. I know next to nothing about angel lore, and I figured, given Luce鈥檚 background, neither did she. Some of the books鈥� critics say there aren鈥檛 enough clues. I disagree. Now, it鈥檚 possible I鈥檓 reading just a wee too much between the lines, but I feel like Luce is making progress. Slow progress, but progress nonetheless.

Second, I think the key to a good novel is whether or not the characters stick with you when you鈥檙e done reading. These do, and not just Luce and Daniel. Arianne, Miles, Shelby, Cam, Gabbe, Roland, even Annebellum, and the others too. Ms. Kate has accumulated quite the cast in her story and has managed to give them depth.

My opinion on a couple of things I鈥檝e heard鈥hat Daniel behaves like a *ahem*, you fill in the blank. I disagree. Daniel clearly would love to tell her everything, but is constrained by 1) his damnation; 2) his fear that Luce will combust with the magnitude of information鈥nd that鈥檒l be his last chance to be with her forever. So, I鈥檓 willing to forgive him for not being forthcoming with info. He does seem to try, and if Luce would pick up on more of his clues (we鈥檙e all fallen angles, Luce), maybe she鈥檚 be getting someplace a bit faster. Still, I鈥檓 enjoying the journey.

Another thing I heard is that Luce is TSTL (too stupid to live). Sure, it鈥檚 a bit frustrating when she constantly flies in the face of what is obviously best for her and leaves the campus to put herself and others in danger. But then again, wouldn鈥檛 it be boring if she didn鈥檛. Besides, I have faith in Ms Kate鈥檚 larger picture here. I have a feeling Luce wouldn鈥檛 be Luce if she accepted direction (and beliefs) on blind faith. It鈥檚 in her nature to rebel and question things. She鈥檚 clearly flawed. I think that鈥檚 the whole point. I look forward to seeing how things get resolved over the next two books, and particularly, I鈥檓 looking forward to a little passion between Luce and Daniel (I hope it鈥檚 those two) in Passion.

This one is so much better than the first one was. They really got into how Luce and Daniel's relationship works, but Daniel did start to really annoy me. I love how the chapters go, but at the end it felt like more than 18 days passed. ...more
