If you set out to write a novel covering Russia from the early 1920s until the early 1950s--encompassing the atrocities that followed the revolution and WWI, the suffering of the 30s, then WWII and the Stalin years of suppression and disappearances--you would never come up with the brilliant book Amor Towles has written. So don't even try. Just read it. And feel a little better. Humanity does resist, persist, and survive.
