Part of the fun of reading advice columns is to see if you have the same problem, and if it can be fixed. I like Cheryl Strayed and believe she has used her life choices to tap into a vein of truth that's made her a good human being and writer. Other peoples' problems can also be a great fun distraction from our own, and I can imagine how this intense focus became a welcome distraction in Strayed's busy life. I didn't want to be manipulated. I didn't want to hear stories straight out of Jerry Springer. And I hate competitions in the "who has it worst" game of life. But about halfway through, the honesty of the stories got to me. The pain and struggle some folks have had is really eye opening. Cheryl Strayed may answer each question with a tale of her own life, but for me, the yearning folks have for some answers, any answers, pulled me in and made me want to root for them. ...more

for Books and Bars on 10/16/12 at the Amsterdam. Similar in confessional tone to Strayed's Wild, so if you didn't like that, this won't work for you either, but it did for me. Tough, funny, honest, sad. This collection of advice columns made me think, and also reminded me that there's always work to be done growing up, no matter how old we are.
