Shelves: my-favourite-books, my-favourite-classics

This is my new FAVOURITE book. I loved it so much, it's written beautifully and I couldn't put it down. I was so surprised that this book made me laugh out loud multiple times because I wasn't expecting it to be funny.

I love how we get to know every character and each one is unique. Maxim is blunt and hilarious. One of my favourite quotes from the book is from him: (view spoiler).

It has been my mission this year to go through all the classics I have in my bookshelf back home so I can rediscover my love for this kind of literature. It's safe to say that I definetly have and Rebecca is another book that I will definetly be adding to my classical favourites! This is such a well written and compelling read. I feel that anyone who loves the chaotic/toxic women trope that is so popular on booktok just now would absolutely love this. The choices made by du Maurier in writing this books are impeccable; for example, we never learn the name of our main character to demonstrate another way in which she is overshadowed and overpowered by Rebecca. As a Swiftie too, I understand the lyrics to 'Tolerate it' even more now (Taylor said she had written it after reading this book). I had previously watched the movie starring Lily James when it first released and had quite enjoyed it but now it angers me immensely. The movie absolutely misunderstands the book and changes things for worse for seemingly no reason. My advice would be to not bother with the movie and stick to the book which is a million times better! (I have heard that an earlier movie adaptation is better though). This book is heartbreaking and frustrating, anger inducing and entirely engrossing. Furthermore, it adds to my increasing dislike for men and absolute disinterest in marriage unless I am 100% convinced by a person for many years. So, if you enjoy being angered by fictional men, you'll also love this. On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed Rebecca and would love to read it again some day! - C x
