This book was exactly what I needed to get me out of a reading slump, I finished in one day, it wasn鈥檛 a masterpiece but it was entertaining nonetheless.

This was a solid, character and plot centered RH, with likable characters and a believable story and relationship arc. I put off reading it for a while because I wasn't sure I liked the premise of the FMC working for guys who make spicy content, but it turns out that worked perfectly.

Spice: I would have liked there to be a little more spicy scenes, BUT I like that McGinty didn't just follow the same formula for most RHs (in which they all come together with little hesitation, and in which there This was a solid, character and plot centered RH, with likable characters and a believable story and relationship arc. I put off reading it for a while because I wasn't sure I liked the premise of the FMC working for guys who make spicy content, but it turns out that worked perfectly.

Spice: I would have liked there to be a little more spicy scenes, BUT I like that McGinty didn't just follow the same formula for most RHs (in which they all come together with little hesitation, and in which there are many full-group scenes). Not every relationship moves that fast or in that direction at all, even polycules, and it felt more authentic and unique the way McGinty developed their group. You have three guys who already have a working relationship (and more) and then the odd guy out who is the first guy Blake is interested in, who doesn't know them. If they all just fell into happy poly piles it would not have been realistic. I loved Darwin's presentation and how they had a group talk about polyamory and how to test the waters. I loved how they recognized that one benefit of a polycule is more people to help emotionally support each other (and that it wasn't written as if it's only the FMC they are benefitting but each other too). I think I've only read that overt recognition in the Age of Andina series. The spicy scenes they did have were great, I just would have liked the book to be 10% longer so we could have a couple more.

Characters: I also delayed reading the book because of some reviews not liking Blake's inner monologue/insecurities about her weight. That fear that I would find her annoying was unfounded. Again, she was portrayed very realistically and no one is going to shed a lifetime of family and friends perpetuating body negativity in just six months. Nothing was excessive, she didn't whine to people, and she didn't fixate on herself - it just read like little self-observations that any of us would have. Reclaiming your acceptance of yourself takes time and it was nicely done here.

All of the characters had depth and were likable. Safe sex was practiced, there was consent - a fantastic consent scene in which she's too tipsy for him to believe she was giving consent and so he ended the date platonically. So many books might have had them go back to his place just "to sleep" and then have them wake up in the middle of the night to continue; I loved that - again - this played out like a date (hopefully) really would.

I always watch to see if the characters help each other grow and improve. I don't want only the FMC to have her paradigm shift, for example. We have Blake recognizing how much Harrison shoulders in his concern for Everett; we have Everett noticing how little free time Hennie has due to his one-man business (and Everett taking steps to help him); we have Darwin, the most intuitive as the youngest of six sisters, aware of little areas all of the others need nudges and him helping give those nudges, etc.

Sweet and spicy!

Like cayenne pralines, it hit all the right notes.

It's the palate cleanser I didn't know I needed. Kind, supportive male characters, kickass secondary characters. It's light and fluffy and schmoopy, but the characters still had some depth. A+ ...more
