After "Altered Destiny" I can no longer claim "I never win anything". On the contrary, I won a great read.
"Altered Destiny" is the sort of fantasy I've been enjoying for years ... counts years, shudders... a long time. A vividly imagined world with high stakes and engaging characters. Fantastic world building, high tension plot, two different species that both evoked sympathy, Altered Destiny has all the hallmarks of an excellent read. Selia is a barkeep in an establishment left to her by her deceased mother. It's located on the very edge of the wastes in a remote village. The first inkling we get of the trouble to come, is when a group of soldiers, led by a commander named Nathan, stop at the bar and share rumors of Svistra attacks on similar small villages along the border.

An enjoyable read. Nice world-building, with a strong fantasy feel though technically a dystopia. The book's main conflict between human and Svistra is echoed in the understate romance between human Selia and Svistra Jaden.

This book was incredibly well-written and a pure and unexpected delight. If you are a fan of fantasy and strong heroines, this is a must-read. I'll be adding Ms. Thomas to my favorite authors list now.

It’s difficult to find a fantasy novel written for adults that has both intricate world-building and a believable romance that drives the story forward. In Altered Destiny, you have a world on the brink of war, star-crossed lovers, engaging secondary characters and an adventure storyline that keeps you guessing. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope for more like it.
