While I wouldn't really call this a detective novel, there is a mystery that gets solved and there is a detective in it. However, the mystery is really solved by several different people working and sharing information, the detective being one of them.

It was a good book - denser than a modern book which is part of its appeal. Some very engaging characters and some very clear social commentary that was pretty funny. One thing I really enjoyed was that the first section is written by one person wh ...more

This is the first book I've read by Wilkie Collins. It won't be the last.

Very well written, and I really liked the changing viewpoints and the bits of humor with the butler. Not my favorite mystery of all time, but solid and it kept me guessing. ...more
