I really enjoyed this -- mostly because I totally remember most of the 80s references in the book, especially the gaming ones, and I have fallen in love with someone I never met in person while I was in a fake online world. It happens! Made me want to get back into gaming since I haven't had time for it much this past year. Not sure if that's good or bad! :D

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I'd give it a solid five stars, but there were a number of occasions where the writing was flat or unnecessarily repetitive. While on the one hand I appreciate that not only were there many bits of 80s culture involved throughout, there were a number of instances in which Cline could have made a more robust universe, and simply chose not to. A nitpicky example of this: he lists a series of gaming consoles and stops at the XBOX and Playstation. It's 30

As one of my fellow book cluber remarked, Ready Player One is pop culture field day. It is a well paced sci-fiction story set in a vivid and very well thought out dystopia. In this world, Cline's hits on the moral and ethical questions that plague a technology centric society. Originally written for adults and is literred with fun and smart 1980s references. But Cline's novel could easily be a strong pull for any teen whose passions are revolve around gaming culture or elements of "geek" culture

A deliciously fun read! Wade Watts is 18 and spends most of his life in the virtual world OASIS as his alter ego, Parzival. In this world, he has friends and he doesn't have to acknowledge how awful the read world has become due to poverty and global warming.
The book takes place in 2044 and the smartest geek of all, OASIS creator James Halliday, has died. He has left his entire fortune to the first person who can crack a series of mystery questions and find the egg.

What a fun read. The writing isn't deep, and sometimes it feels like, despite the apparent obstacles, things are just cruising along too well for the protagonist, but regardless, the book is enjoyable and hard to put down.
The pop culture references were just too old for me (e.g., the eccentric billionaire's favorite sitcom was Family Ties, which went off the air in my lifetime but before I could remember it), but it was all still around in syndication and in nostalgia-induced VH1 shows though m ...more

I've tried and tried and simply can't get into this book. Unless you love 80s and love video games, I'm not sure there is much here to satisfy. Going into my "unfinished business" category.
