Anthony Shadid's memoir is a dual history of his grandparents exodus from Lebanon and his own story of re-discovering his roots in Marjayoun, Lebanon. Coupled with his familial history is a story of Lebanon and in a greater sense, the Middle East.

It took me a while to really be drawn into the story. It was hard to, at first, separate out all of the characters, names and places. I found the second half of the book much more engaging, and for that reason was glad that I had plowed through the fir
