3.5 stars. This is a book ultimately "about" reading and writing, and I love that McEwan can make his points through a story where I'm interested enough in the plot and characters to keep reading. I don't think the story worked perfectly -- the premise of MI5 funding a novelist during the Cold War seemed like a stretch -- but it was interesting enough to read about. A very enjoyable read. This is my first McEwan, so I didn't experience any disappointment, alluded to by some reviewers. This book hooked me right away; although Serena was not all that likeable, I could understand her character, her need to please and be accepted, her desire to do well for the sake of doing well. I found the plot was bogged down a little by the long diversions into history. I have to admit I was just more interested in watching Serena make a mess of things.
