One of my co-workers listens to a lot of audio, so when I asked her for some favorites, she exclusively spoke on the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. She said she only goes to another author if there isn't a new title to listen to, and sometimes even goes back to relisten. I don't read a lot of mystery novels so I decided to have a brief diversion and give it a try.

I don't especially read a lot of mysteries. Sure, I devoured Agatha Christie when I was younger and I got really obsessed with Ian Rankin because he wrote about Edinburgh, but in general I'm not much of a mystery person.
I adored this. One thing I noted, which I thought might be unusual, is that so much of this book concentrated on grief and how people deal with it, rather than just on the crime/criminal. And I rather liked that Nicol didn't end up getting it by the end of the novel. And I found ...more

This is about the 4th or 5th book that I read in this series. It was an interesting experience because I was reading 'Dead Cold" and was half-way through the book when I realized that I needed to start with this series first book (Still Life) to get a good appreication of the cast in Three Pines. The enjoyment is not as much as connecting the dots and uncovering all the little mysteries and secrets but more with discovering new insights and perpectives to life that the cast of Three Pines gives

Nice, cozy village mystery in Agatha Christie style, only of course up to date. This is my first Louise Penny outing, and I enjoyed the setting and characters much more than the story line, which in my humble opinion was a bit thin. Still, I liked it well enough to want to read the next one in the series.

A friend described this series as "the grittiest of coz[y mysteries]" my mother said it was like a soap opera with characters she just didn't like. It was fine writing with a few blocky characters but read well enough (mysteries just aren't my jam tho) #bookclub4m

April 2023: has it really been 10 years since I read this? I absolutely love the Gamache books and Penny is an amazing author brining it all to life with compassion and intellect and humour. I am rereading the series, in honour of the tv series. It was wonderful but still fresh, returning to Three Pines for the first time.
