It has been so long since I read this book, but what I do remember most vividly was the scene where after all the terrible things had happened, it was all worth while because otherwise they wouldn't be standing around eating pistachio nuts. Frankly, even though this is a classic, and the sarcasm is biting and witty, is it, in retrospect, so difficult to ridicule the reassuring philosophy of eternal optimism--"The best of all possible worlds?" Candide is such an amazing story for me. Hilarious, yet thought provoking. Old, but fresh and readable. Surreal, yet lifelike. Just great, and an excellent choice for those who want to read amazing literature, but are afraid when massive books like Anna Karenina or Middlemarch are tossed in front of them.
