What in the hot mess did I just read?

Read for the Frisco Undead & Unread book club.

This is a book about a hotel that caters to the ultra wealthy and allows them to take vacations into the past. That sounds awesome right? 鈥� Wrong - there is 0 time travel in this book. Yup you heard me right 0. What is this book about instead? Corporate greed and mind numbing grief.

There are so many ideas thrown in here - there is a little of this and a little of that. Dinosaurs, holo tables, AI drones, Hitler su What in the hot mess did I just read?

This is a book about a hotel that caters to the ultra wealthy and allows them to take vacations into the past. That sounds awesome right? 鈥� Wrong - there is 0 time travel in this book. Yup you heard me right 0. What is this book about instead? Corporate greed and mind numbing grief.

There are so many ideas thrown in here - there is a little of this and a little of that. Dinosaurs, holo tables, AI drones, Hitler subplots, hunting down Atlantis, and a whole of lot Alice and Wonderland references. This really really could have used some editing. I mean at one point oh no we can鈥檛 leave the hotel it鈥檚 snowing and we are snowed in, 10 pages lates oh no we can鈥檛 leave the hotel the CDC has shown up and put us in lockdown so they can chase the dinosaurs. (Btw there are 30 pages of a 300 page book dedicated to what is almost a scene for scene rip off of Jurassic Park鈥檚 velociraptor scene). How did the CDC magically arrive amid a snow storm that has them locked down? But that would require logic and we don鈥檛 need that for this book.

January Cole is an awful person and a terrible main character to cheer for. You鈥檇 want the main character to have at least one redeeming characteristic but I鈥檓 struggling her. She is terrible to everyone around her be it an actual person or an AI drone that seems to have feelings despite being told it doesn鈥檛. (It refuses to work because January is mean)

January is 鈥渦nstuck鈥� meaning she has experience too much time radiation and is now hallucinating. She sees visions of the past as well as the future. These images come without warning and you are stuck trying to keep up as the book bounces from scene to scene. It leaves January as an extremely unreliable narrator as she tried to stop the bad guys and something about Jabberwocky. I honestly still can鈥檛 tell you what it is.. tech that creates time cloaking that allows our murder to sneak around鈥� I dunno it鈥檚 just poorly explained.

Overall I still don鈥檛 know what I read and I鈥檓 just confused. ...more
