This is the third chuck's novel I have read and the best so far. Chuck is very good in creating deformed characters with the philosophical themes hanging around in their world.
Back to two years ago. i discovered Lou reed. I loved lou reed. This book reminds me of lou reed. The characters of this novel are so similar to the song "Walk on the wild side." So similar yet so different.
Cut to, two days ago. I started reading IM. Do you know what's the most common thing in this world? SELF IMPROVEMENT. ...more

This isn't a long book, but it's not one you can read in one sitting or rush through. Palahniuk has a writing style that I've never seen before. It's not perfect, but it is full of so many great dark, inappropriate, satirical lines that will make you stop and laugh or think "How did he even come up with that?" It's such a treat.

A siblings story. A story about vanity, revenge, and listlessness. This is a story about not fitting in and not wanting to.
Only three stars for me, though, as I felt the majority of the book felt flat and the gimmic of having to jump around the chapters in order not to know when you are getting to the end was unnecessary. On top of that, I know Chuck wrote this around the same time as FIGHT CLUB and while this book's narrator is a completely different person, it sounded a lot like Tyler Durden. ...more

As one of my favourite authors, I am relieved to say that that this restored my faith in Palahniuk after 'Haunted'. A great big poke in the eye for America's obsession with 'beauty' and possessions. Great characters and genuinely amusing.

Excellent story. Good development of characters, even when you read it the way he intended (jumping around) like a Vogue magazine. It is smooth with humour and depth, introspection and exhibition... makes you look at yourself (literally- as a couple of chapters you have to hold up to a mirror) and also think about how you react to others and their feelings on beauty. At least that's what it did for me. Great book. Loved it...would highly recommend AND read again...
