This review is for my reread in 2024, 24 years after reading it the first time (which was pre-GR, hence no review).
I’m am so delighted by this reread. I distinctly remember loving, no, being blown away this trilogy when I read it in 2000/2001. I had forgotten that a certain mystery of connections was revealed at the end of this book and not at the end of the third book. But it was just as horrifying and thrilling as the first time around.

Robin Hobb's newest fangirl, right here. I cannot get through these books fast enough even as I am mourning that there is only one more to go! I am so glad Hobb has such a big back list. These books are so different than the Farseer books, but equally well done. I do miss Fitz though and can't wait to read more of his story after I'm done with these.

Unlike the first book in this trilogy, I jumped straight into this one. Hobb doesn't waste much time recapping book 1, for which I was grateful.
I just can't say enough about the author's ability to write characters. At no point was I thrown out of the story because a character spoke or acted inconsistently (or for any other reason). Hobb's abilities here really shine through with Malta Vestrit and Captain Kennitt. While the other characters are consistent, (view spoiler) ...more
