I read this book for a writing class. I chose Didion because she is a female writer from Sacramento, like me. This is a nonfiction book (memoir) about the year after Didion's husband died. To me, this book was sad without a happy resolution at the end. But it was interesting to see how she told the story.

Call me dark if you need to, however this book was heartfelt and provocative in a raw examination of grief and loss. Sometimes thoughts are like an itch that you can't quite scratch and in this book, I found those thoughts fully formed.

i have loved didion forever, as a california transplant in new york, but this did me in as a psych student as well. the entire book is about dealing with grief, dealing with death and mortality and the "bad hand" that you sometimes get dealt. And how you can't predict anything, how life is something that happens, whether you want it to or not.
