From the first page, I felt the author had just finished a Chuck Palahniuk novel and decided she wanted to be like him when she grew up. Sentence fragments can be fun if you're in the mood for things like "A belly. A smell. He was suddenly standing next to me." (Not exact quotes, but pretty close.) I wasn't in the mood, and it was irritating. Also, I couldn't enjoy the main character. A disturbing, dark, twisted, who done it which layers on the ways of small towns: what people see or portray on the surface and the secrets and lies bubbling right below the surface that everyone knows about. Add in complicated mother/daughter relationships and how they impact behavior and I'm sold. This is the second Gillian Flynn book that made me gasp out loud, in this case it was where the teeth were found.

This book was such an interesting and disturbing look at family dynamics, so much that the murder mystery aspect really took second place. That played out in the narrative as well as in how everyone in the town seemed to treat the murders too, a lot of the characters really seemed to play the horror of it only lip service, and immediately focused on their own lives, problems, and the never-ending search for town gossip.
