This was one of those classic occasions when this reader perused the review on the back (from Publishers Weekly in this case), saw this enticing menu and was netted:
"...it has vampires, demons, angels, murder, lynching, beatings, rape, sex, parallel worlds, Antarctic voyages, socialism, sexism, racism, paranoia, gossip, spiritualism, and escalating insanity..."
And yes indeed it does, and almost 700 pages to fit it into. It has a vigorous sense of place - Princeton, 1905 - and a hugely impressive ...more

Unrelenting in its tedium
I feel bamboozled by King's fatuous review of this novel in the NYT. I'm glad I survived, but I won't be reading another JCO novel for a good while. ...more
