“No, you stay here, finish the runs. I shouldn’t be more than a couple of hours. When you’re done with this, I want you to go find a hammer. Peabody had taken out her memo book, nearly plugged in the order, when she stopped, frowned up at Eve. “Sir? A hammer? “That’s right. A really big, heavy hammer. Then you take it into my office and beat that fucking useless excuse for a data spitter on my desk to dust.
I love Eve’s constant battle with tech and her willingness to beat a machine to pieces after it fails her one too many times. If readers responses to passages like this are any indication, the majority agrees with her. And that’s a strong key to Nora’s books: relatability with the characters. Sure, no one is a murder cop from the near future (though cops do love this series) but they all have that similar experience with tech and that explosive need to destroy what frustrates them. Eve, though, actually follows through.

“Roarke, the lieutenant has just come in from outside. She wore no outer gear. She looks very bad. “Where is she? “She’s heading up. Roarke, I insulted her and . . . she apologized to me. Something must be done.
In Conspiracy, Eve faces the possibility of not being a cop. As she stumbles through her misery at turning in her badge and weapon while under investigation, those who love her do their utter best to comfort her without pressure. That all stops when she horrifies Summerset with an apology. He pushes Roarke to take action i.e., piss Eve off with a list of things she can do other than be a detective. Concise dialogue to bring on quick action a hallmark of the series (in my opinion).
