Sarah This particular poll went through so many versions and revisions that I was driving myself insane. I think Allison thought it was weird when every single one I sent her was different. But I finally settled on a list!

Part of the reason I had trouble was that my first version was too dark, my second was too literary, my third too light... Ridiculous, I know. So I finally looked at what we're reading in March (The Invisible Library - light and YA) and what the nom theme for May is (I'm not telling!) and I decided that literary and more serious was the route I wanted.

Immortals of Meluha - This one was on a list of Indian novels that Allison sent me. It looks really good and there seems to be some interest in it on the Inclusive Book Bingo thread.

Among Others - I actually got this one off of Edwin's TBR challenge. I was glancing through people's challenges and I've wanted to read this for awhile. Plus, how in the world is Jo Walton still not on our bookshelf?

Kingfisher - This was on last year's Locus Reading List and I've been meaning to fit it in at some point. McKillip is pretty popular so it seemed like a good one for right now.

Certain Dark Things - A book group that I started with a couple of friends (and then stepped down as mod because it's so incredibly busy) reads lots and lots of books. This one cropped up last year and I've been really curious about it. It looks like a really different take on vampires and it's combined with Latin American mythology. Now that I've explained it, I'm so enthusiastic about this one that I may have to change my vote.

Spoonbenders - This one caught my eye awhile ago when a friend read it. It seems to pop up from time to time on my feed so it looks like people are interested in it. I chose it now because it ended up on this year's Nebula short list.

Another book I considered was The Ninth Rain, which was quite unfortunately out of print. It looks so interesting!

I poked around on the Tor and Roc websites and on Cogman's author site, and I can't see that The Invisible Library has ever been marketed as YA. Of course, there's no clear dividing line between adult and YA fiction in many cases, hence the 266 Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ members who've shelved the book as "Young Adult". But at the very least, I don't think The Invisible Library is unquestionably YA.

(As to why this matters at all, given the abovementioned lack of a clear dividing line: I've noticed that books marketed as adult fiction and written by women tend to be labeled YA more frequently than books marketed as adult fiction and written by men. So I'm a bit sensitive to the issue.)

Sarah That's definitely true, and it is frustrating. I was going by the goodreads shelving.

Edwin Priest Sarah Anne wrote: "Among Others - I actually got this one off of Edwin's TBR challenge. I was glancing through people's challenges and I've wanted to read this for awhile. Plus, how in the world is Jo Walton still not on our bookshelf?"

Wow, I'm honored. I guess I have to vote for it now.

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Nah, I really want Walton on the shelf. It was just agood excuse.

message 6: by J.W. (new)

J.W. Immortals was my vote because that cover is awesome. Deal.

message 7: by Jen (new)

Jen I read Among Others a couple of years ago and I just adored it.

message 8: by Travis (new)

Travis Foster Among Others has been on my tbr for a long time. I've heard such amazing things.

message 9: by Bobby (new)

Bobby Certain Dark things looks really good. I especially like that it is set in Mexico City, and at least one of the vampires is descended from the Aztecs. I haven't read it yet, but I like the potential there of different vampire origins. I took a class in college on vampires. I thought it was a blow off class, but it turned out to be a pretty good blend of history about the legends of vampires, and literature through the ages regarding vampires, and how it has evolved in modern days. So I would love to read about a new way of looking at vampires other than the common Eastern European legends blended in with Bram Stoker's ideas.

So curious what's going to happen with this poll! I'm not sure we can really lose--they all look interesting to me. But I'm with you JW. Immortals has my vote. I'm smitten with this concept and art.

message 11: by Kim (new)

Kim Kaso Among Others is a great read, it was like revisiting all my favorite books that I read from my childhood through HS & on. It is a book to highlight, and elicits all the feelings I had the first time I encountered certain books & authors. Also, finding libraries & bookstores & trying to decide how to maximize what money I had for each week’s reading. This is a book for readers everywhere.

Kim All Kim's do not agree with the above statement.

J.W. People did you even look at the cover of the Immortals one? It’s begging to be read!

J.w.--I'm pretty sure it's gonna get nommed for the bingo read, too, but if not...buddy read?

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah The funny thing about this poll is that I almost didn't put Among Others in. I didn't think people would want to read it.

message 17: by Michael (new)

Michael I was most interested in reading Kingfisher by Patricia A. McKillip but it looks like I was one of the few. I'll probably pick it up anyway, for an unofficial read!

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah It may be in last place but it still got 20 votes. That's kind of amazing.

I would've voted for Kingfisher, but I can't find it at any of the libraries near me, so I figured I should vote for something I'd actually read. But I want to read something by McKillip soon!

message 20: by Chris (new)

Chris Now that Among Others has won, I strongly recommend the audiobook version. Katherine Kellgren did a great Welsh accent, which really anchored me in the story's setting.

message 21: by Anna (new)

Anna I love the audio, but I'd suggest listening to the sample before buying.
