some of you may have heard me speak scathingly about this last night at cassie’s party and i’ve since 1. read the afterword and 2. been to book club asome of you may have heard me speak scathingly about this last night at cassie’s party and i’ve since 1. read the afterword and 2. been to book club and i do think it was terribly written but i also think this would have changed my life had i read it when it came out (2008!) and i’d have eaten this shit UP. maria is annoying and i have no problem reading an annoying character, but i’ve got to feel in on it with the author, like we’re annoyed together at this person, and i just didn’t feel that reading this. i felt like the author is annoying in the way Maria is annoying and so i didn’t enjoy reading her at all. many things i appreciated about it too but i can’t be arsed writing more. i’d probably recommend to teenagers but only those who are mature enough to know a 29 year old woman offering a 20 year old HEROIN is extremely not fucking cool at all...more
I haven't actually read the entire decameron, obviously. there are lots of things i love about it, it does become samey if you're just reading it for I haven't actually read the entire decameron, obviously. there are lots of things i love about it, it does become samey if you're just reading it for fun. i started reading it again because of the netflix adaptation which i thought was so clever because the format was so different, but with the kind of humour they used i feel like it will have been received in a similar way to how the decameron was received in the 1300s and i thought that was really thoughtful, and there was a hint of the original structure in the last episode too. i think boccaccio is cheeky and funny and i like how he wrote, i reckon if i wasn't in a book club and therefore being quite structured with what i read i would have dedicated more time to this and actually finished it but alas there are just too many other things i want to read!...more
