This story really gets into this life of Azalai life and how much salt means to these people. How each area has something precious to trade which gives everyone a way to share in these needs. We see Saffron and dates all important.
The salt is cut into slabs and placed on camels and marched through the desert. They can travel by the stars.
I have no interest in going to the desert, it's not my place in the world, but this story really illuminated this life. It's so interesting. It also goes into the importance of salt. We have so much salt, it's taken for granted here.
My dad is so particular about salt. He HATES the new fancy salts. He likes the old stand by of morton salt. He loves to coat tomatoes and any fruit in it. He's a salt-aholic. He hates pink Himalayan salt or sea salt. He'll get mad. It's interesting. I've seen him get up and go buy salt right there if there isn't the salt he likes to eat. He is particular about his salt.
The artwork was stunning. It did a great job showing this unusual and huge part of the world. I love seeing the shadows of the camels in caravan. That was cool. It's acrylic, oil paint with pastels. Rich colors are used and the people are well drawn.

He got a dream in his head. He wanted everyone, not just rich folks, so be able to eat ice cream. So, he figured out how to make money selling ice cream. He also found better ways to make it so it lasted longer and didn't melt as quickly.
He's an amazing guy. Another feel good story.

His tent would flood with water and then they would bake in the sun. It was a hard existence.
The father collected shells during his stay. All sorts of shells that reminded him of the good times he had with his family.
The artwork is digital and the people look interesting. I love the scenes on the beach with the family. The father dies young from the experience and the family remembers him.
The story deals with the horror so well. We see the things and it's not too much for children. Most of the horrors are kept at a distance for kids to process, but you see how unfair this all was.

Orson loves books, so I really relate to Orson. All his favorite rooms have books. All my rooms have books accept the bathroom, so again, I relate.

Orson goes to the library and it's loud. He likes it quiet when he reads. I have noticed a trend in the last 30 years in which libraries have become a very loud place with lots of stuff going on. It still surprises me to go into a library and the noise level. When I lived in Ann Arbor, they had a great library system. One library had this huge machine that was 15 feet tall and it shot these balls up into the pipes and the kids could watch them fall. It was so loud and kids were doing this all the time. It was like a skating rink or day care.
So, libraries are no longer quiet. Orson in the story learns to deal with that. I admit, I don't stay at the library any more. I get my books and leave. I'm glad they're used, but it's become a day care. Most try and separate the children's area from the rest, but it's still loud, I find. Now, they have video game consoles and someone is always playing those.
Anyway, Orson, in the story learns to embrace the people and he unshushes people he shushed. It's cute.

It's a good reminder that we can't be perfect in life. We have to learn to fall to move forward. It's such a hard lesson and one we need to learn.

My nephew uses this all the time. "I'm just a kid, you can't expect me to do it." He likes to be helpless. My puppy was barking in the cage and we had to leave her there and he got so mad at the barking. I told him there isn't anything we can do. Well, he finally went into action and placed the cage outside. I was so proud of him. He always expects others to fix his problems and he did it himself. It was a great moment.

My boss is Jamaican and he's talked about a patty before. Some of the phrases used in here remind me of how my boss would say it.
A family makes these patties and sale them to the islanders. They make money that way. People keep leaving the island until they can no longer make a living off them. So, they too immigrate to the states.
Life is not nearly as joyous in the city working in a factory. It's the kid missing patties that brings joy back to his parents. Everyone wants a patty. Now, I need to find a patty to try.
