This is a fantastic trip and it is so well narrated the reader will feel like they are part of the crew. The kindness of strangers,the harrowing passage through the top of Australia and the howling winds of the red sea all made this a riveting dramatic read. Michael really took his time in the South Pacific and although he enjoyed Sri Lanka much of the 2nd. and 3rd. parts of the journey seemed more constrained due to land,currents,war and the high cost of Europe.

I read this several years ago and recently saw the audio version and decided to listen to it as well. There are a few things Peter teaches those of us who dont surf, but overall I found his writing to be disingenuous. He talks about how he's roughing in the VW, but at the end he stays in a five star resort after gashing his head open. At first he seemed humble and got several mentors, but when I buys a quiver of 6 boards to surf Mexico with his wife it seemed really phony. There are real surfers who love the sport. Peter wants to love surfing, but writing is his profession. I enjoyed Hound of the Sea much more by Garrett Mcnamara.

Some of the writing is very evocative, so this is a travelouge and not a diary. The reader will be swept away at times into far flung,remote corners of Chile that are very intruiging. The south of Chile is an archipelago of islands that isnt easily navigated, but the author, an Englishwoman, is game and along with other intrepid travelers goes there. The book is decent, but brief and the details of how she got the flat in Santiago are not divulged. I found some of the book confusing. A longer book might have made this better. Maps are included and make a great reference point for understanding the topography of and amazing country.
