After the twisty intrigue of Rachel Price, my expectations for Holly Jackson's next book were through the roof. I was ready to have at least as much fun and to puzzle along again, and Not Quite Dead Yet definitely delivered. It was simply unputdownable, and I'm glad I chose to read it on a quiet day where I could finish it without interruptions.
Jet is a pretty unlikeable main character at first, but something about her pulled me in and made me connect with her, and even relate to her to some extent. I was rooting for her to solve her own murder, but what I didn't sign up for was the emotional rollercoaster her murder investigation would take me on. I'm not exaggerating when I say I could just about keep myself from bawling by the end....more

I haven't read a funnier book in a while, this actually made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Mavis got into so many sticky situations in this installment, it was truly one thing after another, and it was so entertaining. At the same time, Mavis and her friends and family feel so real and you find yourself rooting for them so much. This book didn't feel super romance-centered, but there's some love triangle hinting going on that I am very much here for! I'm firmly Team Corey - I'm a sucker for a second chance romance. I'm really looking forward to the next installment....more

I have to admit I feel a little let down by this book though, it didn't live up to I Did Something Bad for me. The writing didn't feel as fun to me, the mystery wasn't as compelling, and most importantly, I didn't connect with the romance as much. I didn't feel like it was given enough attention within the story, and I didn't really feel the chemistry. I felt like changes in their relationship came on very suddenly and without enough build-up. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy this at all, but just that it fell flat for me in comparison with the author's previous book....more

I would say this one is a little more romance-heavy than mystery-heavy, because it's not super suspenseful, but it does go all in on the romance in terms of emotional depth. I honestly really appreciated that. For instance, this is one of those rare books where the third act conflict actually serves a clear purpose and makes sense in the story, and it made me pretty emotional to read. But although I have mentioned this being emotional twice now, I would definitely consider this a romcom, and there were so many funny and lighthearted moments....more

This sequel has everything I loved in the first book, and more. The writing is once again hilarious. Vera is a larger than life character who just jumps off the page. The found family element of her collecting family members left, right and center is incredibly heartwarming. And this book has such a strong mystery, possibly even stronger than the first book. I felt super invested, and it all made me pretty emotional to read by the end. I hope there will be many more Vera Wong books!...more

This book is a lot more brutal than I remember her other books being, which is something to be aware of, but I thought it was really well done. An incredibly ambitious project, and one I wasn't sure would be successful, but they truly managed to pull it off. This was somehow a great blend of unique individual voices and characters and a cohesive storyline. It was so interesting to see each author's perspective on the magic school and the magic system, with all these different magical abilities that made for a really fun reading experience. Usually it takes me a while to read anthologies, but I flew through this one....more
