I was a teenager when I first experienced this fantastic movie and have been enthralled with everything about it ever since.
But you know what I hadn't done yet? I'd never read the novelisation. And since 80s novelisations are so much fun, I finally read this very cool book.
Lucy Emerson recently got divorced and decides to move back to Santa Carla with her teenage boys. Lucy gets a new job and fancies her boss. Michael falls for a mysterious girl who leads him down a dark path. Sam makes new friends who help when comic books come true. While Grandpa watches everything from his taxidermy room...
Amazing. Awesome. Enjoyed every minute of this great novelisation.
Not only did this book totally capture the atmosphere of the movie, but it also complements and enhances everything about it. The location, the characters, the mystery, everything!
Several deleted scenes (which we watched not long ago because they were included in the 4k ultra HD+ Blu-ray) are part of this story. And we also get multiple POVs, plus a little more about each Lost Boy. Which was a nice addition. The vamps are still intriguing and cool, but several unexpected tidbits are added to the narrative.
Anyway, I read the whole thing in one night because I didn't want to put it down. Glad it didn't disappoint. I had a blast!! ...more

ValkolI love vampires in all of their undead glory, so when I found out that Brian Bowyer had a vamp story available, I couldn't wait to check it out.
Valkolar is a very old vampire. Delarosa is a faithless priest. Jamie and Kirsten are young lovers looking for music and adventure. Olivia and Sirius are gifted undead children living their lives recklessly. Naomi is an ambitious musician with an alcohol problem. Mohammed stalks the night. And Rosalie, she's a whole different kind of monster...
Well, this is one hell of a violent and bloody ride! And I enjoyed every gory minute of it.
The fast-paced pages of this book are fuelled by short and crisp chapters that grab you by the throat and refuse to let go. There are a lot of dark characters in this depraved tale, but every single one feels different and their alternating POVs move the overall story until you're thrust headfirst into the shocking conclusion.
I do have to mention that this isn't for the squeamish, or for anyone who can't bring themselves to read violence against children. But if you can stomach extreme horror of the true-crime kind, mixed with an interesting take on vampirism, then this book is definitely worth your time.
Personally, I was hooked from beginning to end, and couldn't wait to find out where everything was going to go. And where everyone was going to land.
I look forward to checking out more books written by Brian. ...more

When Lillian kills her father, she wants to get as far away from him and his men as she can. But with an injured Native woman by her side, surviving the Mojave desert might prove difficult. Until they arrive in the town of Calico, a place where they can both be safe. Unless the past catches up with her...
The Longest Thirst is like a fever dream under the blistering hot sun, after not having a single sip of water while shambling aimlessly over the sand hoping to find a place that will heal your bleeding heart.
Everything that happens in this story is violent and cuts deep. The circumstances are as cruel as the desolate landscape, and the men are even worse. After all, nature is harsh because that's how the cycle of life turns. But the motivations of men are mostly greed and control, a way to exert pain to keep women in line.
This, unfortunately, is Lillian's life and no matter how far she runs, or how fast she tries to escape, the past always has a way of finding you. And in her case, offering kindness and understanding to someone very different to herself, might not be enough.
Asides from Lillian's peach-coloured dress, there's nothing pretty in this story. The situation is grim and the reality raw enough to make you squirm. Yet, it's hard to turn away from what's going on because I wanted to know where Lillian's story was going to take her.
The memories of her mother are a lovely addition. I loved Obsidian and Rembrandt. And the people who live in The Painted Cat are a refreshing bunch to spend time with.
If you're squeamish, this might be a hard read. There are a lot of triggers in this tale of survival, and the narrative never shies away from the true horror. No matter how crude or bloody. And that final scene was great, it really got me. Yikes!
I really enjoyed this brutal story, and the way it was written really drew me in. ...more

Alice Ann and Hannah Grace aren't your average sisters because they're not exactly human. While Alice Ann prowls the night looking for victims, her older sister prefers to stay behind because she hasn't been feeling well lately. At least, that's what she thinks is going on...
Every page of this novella is full of wondrous, eerie and surreal darkness that slips from reality, to dream and past memories as quickly as Alice Ann's descent into her own mind. A place where so much is hidden, confused by time, and mostly uncomfortable to face without the painful truth.
And I enjoyed every single minute of it.
I really liked how well the action of her vampiric existence in present day, and all the things we can expect from a creature of the night, are balanced out with a unique take on the genre. The worldbuilding is just enough to craft an understanding of how things work for these sisters. It also introduces an interesting weakness.
Sometimes, we don't know what we have until it's gone and we're left to face an ugly reality full of guilt, sadness and grief. Vampires aren't any different. Actually, they exist for much longer, so wouldn't every experience be that much worse? Hit that much deeper?
Also, the author's storytelling style and voice kept me glued to this book as much as Alice Ann's experience....more

Where do II'm going to start by saying that The Lost Boys is one of my most favourite movies ever, which might explain my reaction to this comic book.
Where do I start? Well, I'll begin with what caught my eye. That the sax player was a vampire hunter. That sounded like a great premise to me. But then, in the first issue, Grandpa gets killed. Okay, I didn't like that (at all) but it still seemed promising.
I put it aside for a while and read the rest this morning. ...more

This is a great vampire story, but it's also a terrific story about friendship, loyalty, and how far someone who cares/loves you is willing to go.
I also love the bravery of every character. The creepiness and dread that Dracula adds to this story. And the epistolary format works really well at revealing the overall story via different POVs.
I'm going to miss getting these emails because it was definitely a fun and different way of reading a novel. ...more

This book doesn't disappoint. It might be short, but it's definitely cheeky and funny. The illustrations are gorgeous and every page is super colourful. I smiled all the way through this little tale covering quite a few familiar monsters, and especially liked the ending because it's cute and so true!

I always get excited when I receive a book of poetry from RDSP because they publish some gems. This time I got two!
So I decided to start with this one.
I'm a huge fan of supernatural creatures and urban myths, so I was looking forward to getting lost in the forest of words in front of me. This book didn't disappoint because it's full of deep and disturbing tales of mythology, folklore, urban legends, and even pop culture. And each of these tales is presented in poems that either fill you with wonder, make your skin crawl, or bring out a smile because the sheer darkness captured within this collection of artful words works so well.
Something else I really enjoyed was the way each section is introduced with a bit of handy information about the many creatures—some more obscure than others—before each poem delves into their gloomy underbelly with nightmarish and vivid precision.
It's almost a manual for the furry, fanged, decayed, dead, undead and so many more monsters one might encounter in the darkest of places, on the spookiest night under a watchful moon.
I think this one's a keeper because I really enjoyed the ride through the landscape of Monstrum Poetica.
This is a fantastic collection. If you're into poetry intricately woven with the arcane, then you should definitely check it out. ...more
