Growing up in their small Nevada town, she has done a good job of hiding her feelings, but it’s getting harder and harder to do. Then something happens and the country is at war with an unknown entity. Bombs go off all around the US and all, save one elected leader, is killed. What happens when leadership is gone and things like food and water and medical care are compromised and technology and communication won’t work? These are the things that Amber and her family have to deal with.
But they also have to figure out who is behind the attacks.
Now, this states that this series is New Adult, which had me hugely excited but to be honest this read like a YA book. I guess the NA is reflective of the character’s ages rather than the content but I went in expecting one thing and got something different. That said, the UST between Rylen and Amber is crazy from beginning to end and I hope we’ll see more on that front in the coming books in the series.
I think that there should be more books that have to do with invasions. I’ve read a few books and have loved them, and this one was just compulsively readable! Not only are the characters interesting, but the story is just intriguing! This rag-tag group of people trying to do whatever they can to survive is just so well done.
The different character dynamics are very interesting and it was refreshing to see a diverse family featured in this story.
I’m definitely looking forward to book 2 in this series and If you’re looking for an action packed story with an incredibly intriguing story, then pick this one up as soon as possible. ...more
I really love Julie Cross’s writing so I was super excited to see that she was writing a mystery, suspense YA series! First of all, you hav4.5 stars!
I really love Julie Cross’s writing so I was super excited to see that she was writing a mystery, suspense YA series! First of all, you have to know that I am obsessed with crime and suspense stories. I could watch Investigation Discovery 24/7 Dateline, I think I’ve seen every episode. I love this genre when it’s done well, and I think that Cross did an amazing job with the first book in the Eleanor Ames series! Cross certainly delivers with Chasing Truth.
I’m going to admit up front that this book is a bit long for a YA story, but when I think back, I can’t think of a way it could have been shorter! Which just means that it needed to be this long, but please don’t let the size of it keep you from picking it up!
Eleanor Ames has a past she’s not proud of she grew up only knowing the next con and the next job. Her family isn’t one she can depend on, except her sister Harper. On the straight and narrow now, she’s enrolled at Holden Prep, brushing elbows with the rich and powerful and none of them know who she used to be. After attending Homecoming with her best friend Simon, he commits suicide but she’s convinced that’s just not true.
The more Eleanor digs, the more questions arise and then she meets her new neighbor Miles Beckett. He’s mysterious and arrogant and he sees things in only black and white but things with him aren’t exactly as they seem either.
Cross did an amazing job building the suspense with this story, and I can admit that I had no clue who did what and who was doing what and I loved every second of it. Also, I just have to mention the UST between Miles and Eleanor because holy crap there is so much and it’s delicious and I want so much more of it. These two clicked on so many levels, but they are also keeping major secrets from each other and that really puts a crimp in them trusting each other and working together to find the truth about what happened to Simon.
I also enjoyed a lot of the secondary characters here and they were all a big part of the story! From Justice and Bret to Dominic and Aidan they all had major parts in this and really rounded out the story.
I’m super excited for the rest of this series and I can’t wait to see what happens in the second book, I have some hopes as to what we’ll see, but I know I’ll love it no matter what Julie writes.
Fans of Veronica Mars are going to love this! Grab this one as soon as possible!

Okay so let me just get the one thing that bothered me about this book out of the way first. There is a line in the summary that I kept wait3.5 stars
Okay so let me just get the one thing that bothered me about this book out of the way first. There is a line in the summary that I kept waiting for and waiting for and waiting for. AND IT NEVER HAPPENED. And that really just irritated me.
“With planets on the brink of war, Rhee and Aly are thrown together to confront a ruthless evil that threatens the fate of the entire galaxy.
Thrown together like together together. Right? WRONG. At no time in this book are the two “together. There was this one time that I thought it was finally going to happen but no. And then I kept waiting for this epic meet up between the two heroes of this book and nothing.
Okay now that that’s out of the way, I can tell you that the rest of this book is actually pretty good. I think it can only be described as action, action, action. There is a ton of it, and it keeps the pace of this book moving along quickly. Rhee is the last of the Ta’an dynasty and her father is the one that created the Urnew Treaty which ended the great war. At the age of 6, her family was killed, betrayed by the one person they should have been able to trust, and she had been secluded on a planet away from the crown until she came of age to rule. That time has arrived, and her time for revenge has also arrived.
Things don’t go exactly as planned though, of course.
Aly has risen above his refugee status and become a bit of a star, but now he’s a wanted man having been accused of killing Rhee and possibly restarting the war that ended years ago. Now he’ll do whatever it takes to clear his name.
This story is told from both Rhee and Aly’s points of view, which works, but also sort of didn’t. I mean, there was absolutely no way around this, because 2 characters, doing 2 different things, but it was honestly hard for me to keep track of who was where and when because of all the different planet names and all the action going on. One thing that I hope for in the final copy of this book is a map of the galaxy that shows where the different planets are I really think that could add to the experience of reading this story.
I liked Rhee and Aly both of them are characters with strong personalities and it was nice to see that Rhee wasn’t some pampered princess who didn’t know how to take care of herself. At times I just felt like that’s what we were told instead I would have liked to see it a bit more proof of that along the way though. Aly too was a bit one dimensional, but I’m hoping book 2 will expound on him and his story a bit more.
I will say that the world building was really well done. The groundwork that Belleza had to do to create this universe with it’s unique political system must have been daunting and I loved that there was so much attention to detail with the new technologies, and the different kinds of characters included. Fans of Sci-Fi are definitely going to love these aspects.
I will also say that there are some twists and turns in this story that I suppose many won’t figure out but I did pretty early on. I mean, in all honesty the big one is hinted about pretty heavily in certain parts of the story and some of the other things that you find out along the way were not quite apparent, but more like there was no other option (that will make more sense when you read it!).
Also, I would like to point out that this has a unique spin on the typical YA romance. If you’re hoping Rhee and Aly are going to fall madly in love with each other, I think you can take that off the table. Both are falling for/have fallen for someone else and I don’t see that changing in the next book I think. It’s definitely a different take and I really like the twist here!
Overall, this was a good start to a new sci-fi series. I’m definitely going to be picking up book 2 but will certainly be hoping that these two characters stories start to merge together pretty quickly in it.
If you’re a fan of sci-fi and excellent world-building then I highly recommend this, but please keep in mind that the summary isn’t entirely an accurate breakdown of the book itself. Belleza has created a unique and excellent cast of characters with an intriguing plot that you won’t want to miss experiencing yourself. I’ll definitely be waiting over here for book 2!

Let me just start by saying that I loved pretty much everything about this story. I had high, high hopes because of some of the raves I had seen floating around, and it truly didn’t disappoint.
Fallon lives in the shadow of her older sister Sorcha who died in battle against Julius Caesar she strives to be the warrior that she was and hopes her father will appoint her to his royal war band, even pushing the boy she loves aside to attain this one honor. Her father however has other plans for her, and instead of facing them she runs, only to be captured by a ruthless group of slavers who end up selling her to a training school for female gladiators in Rome.
I think what I loved most about this story was the idea of the female gladiators We’ve all seen Gladiator and I binge watched Spartacus on a weekend, but you never see anything about the women of the time who fought, and The Valiant gives a no-holds-barred look at what that could have looked like for these strong and brutal women. The story-telling is so vivid and filled with so much action that I couldn’t put this book down.
But underneath the blood and violence, the story encompasses so much more, exploring themes of sisterhood, politics, freedom and honor, and Livingston did an amazing job keeping me riveted to the story.
Of course there is some romance here and Fallon, in her homeland, is in love with Mael, who from the first page you can tell is sweet and lovely and you can see how their friendship evolved into more sort of. Admittedly the beginning part of the book kind of rushes by to set up Fallon’s falling into the hands of the slavers and then being delivered to the training school, but the connection between the two rings true to me. That is until she meets Cai, a young Roman soldier. This is where the romance gets a bit muddied because while Fallon fights against the idea of falling for Cai, Mael seems to become a distant memory pretty quickly, and I don’t know that I truly believed the evolution of these two falling for each other. I think I needed more of their connection to buy into it. That said, the romance is really not what this story is about.
Sisterhood is a major theme here... Fallon’s new family are the gladiator’s she is forced to fight among and I really enjoyed watching her build bonds and relationships with those around her. Elka is probably my favorite secondary character in this book and I hope we see so much more of her in book 2. There is a bit of a twist that I’m not going to spoil, but just know that you might see it coming and you might not. I kind of a had a feeling about it so it didn’t come out of left field for me, but Livingston doesn’t make it easy to guess for sure.
There is also a bit of a side-plot where someone is threatening Fallon upon her arrival to the training camp, and while it wasn’t readily given away who was behind it all, it is pretty easy to figure out who it is, though ultimately, I wasn’t sure how this really was meant to impact the story as a whole, because big picture it really didn’t, and at times it sort of felt like unnecessary filler.
The end of this story is amazing! Everything builds into this spectacular, action-packed ending that will have you turning the last page and dying for more. I love where this story ends for Fallon and I can’t wait to see what Livingston has in store for her in the future.
If you’re a fan of historical fiction and kick-ass women then this is the book for you. I promise you’ll get a wild, adventure filled with battles, friendship and romance that you won’t want to put down until you turn the last page.

So admittedly I was a little leery when I requested this book because while it’s not really a forbidden kind of romance, it’s a bit weird when you say you’re dating your step-brother right?
Here’s the thing. I think Chambers did this in the best way possible. First of all, Chloe isn’t close with her father, but he’s getting remarried so she is off (with her best friend) to spend the summer with him and get to know his soon to be wife and her son as well as rekindle the relationship with him. From the get go you can tell Landon and Chloe are interested in each other and both do a pretty good job of trying to hide it from the other. So point for making an effort. As they spend more time together though, it gets harder and harder to deny that they aren’t interested.
But the relationship here isn’t the only thing happening. While Chloe’s a bit of an introvert and has been keeping something that happened at home right before her departure a secret, she’s got her bff with her on this trip and they make up a list of things that Chloe needs to accomplish this summer. Jenna is a bit of a whirlwind and there were times that I absolutely enjoyed her, but there were times that I thought she was incredibly obnoxious and irritating. The two are complete opposites and it’s almost strange that they are such amazing friends, but then again, opposites and all that. They complement each other well, and Chambers has created an amazing friendship between the two.
Now let’s talk about Landon I honestly don’t know if I’d be able to deny myself either if he were my step-brother. Landon is off to college soon, to wrestle even though football is his passion, there are too many things that could go wrong if he pursued what he really wanted. Landon is keeping a secret from Chloe, one that he thinks could ruin anything between them because he is insecure about it and though one might think the sweet, sexy, football playing guy might be cocky, he is the farthest thing from it. And despite the numerous warnings from his mother to stay away from Jenna and Chloe, he can’t watch Chloe from the side-lines.
The romance here is lovely I really enjoyed seeing these characters getting to know each other before anything serious happens and I also really love that Chambers manages to weave in some serious topics in this story without it becoming overwhelmingly depressing, and seeing Chloe find the strength in herself when she needed it was really wonderful.
If you’re looking for something a bit different in the YA romance genre then you should definitely give this one a try! The writing is solid and the story is definitely a fun read.

The Graces was an interesting read for me I kind of went into it with no expectations and knowing very little about it other than that there were wit The Graces was an interesting read for me I kind of went into it with no expectations and knowing very little about it other than that there were witches involved!
River (though that’s not her real name) moves to town for reasons completely unknown to us as the reader when you start reading, and immediately is captivated by the Graces Fenrin, Thalia & Summer. She’s not alone though, everyone wants to be linked to them in some way or another and as much as River tries to deny it, she wants to belong and be a part of their crazy, strange life. Everyone is intrigued by the Grace family and has their own story to share about them, but while River finds herself connecting with Summer, she can’t deny that she is drawn to Fenrin in a romantic way.
She finds herself welcomed with somewhat open arms into this strange family but that’s not without it’s problems.
River is so hard to like here you guys I’m not going to lie. Her desperation to be a part of this family was a bit off-putting and a little weird at first. I will say that by the end, the obsession with them definitely made more sense once we, as the reader, are brought up to speed as to her history and what she’s been going through. Her search for an explanation for who she really is and what she can do really made it make more sense. That said, I struggled very much in the beginning because you are basically shown two different people the ordinary girl who just wants to suffer through school and not draw attention to herself, and the self-assured girl who is above everything and everyone else that the Graces are drawn to. It was hard to tie those two characters together, and at times I found her lack of self-confidence irritating. Also, some of her behavior was just a bit weird and off-putting. The one scene that comes to mind is when she decides to wander around the Grace house alone and starts digging around in rooms she obviously shouldn’t be in. She encounters their father and the whole thing was just weird and strange and I struggled to figure out why it was a part of the story.
The story itself was intriguing, though I wish I understood the Grace family a bit more. The Graces are a little odd though I think that is intended. They don’t quite fit in in this town and they really set themselves apart from the town and its citizens, so when River is welcomed it is strange for sure. Of course the rumor is the they are all witches and that they keep among themselves because they don’t want others to know, and while it’s never really confirmed, there are enough rumors and strange goings on that everyone thinks it’s true. Are they really witches or is it just the impression they want everyone to have of them? I think we never really see any examples of their abilities so I'm a bit confused on that point and Summer, Thalia and Fenrin are at all different points in their feelings of witchcraft and who their family really is, so it’s never really ever clear what their abilities are.
I feel like it took a bit to get into this story for sure, the pacing felt a bit off for me, and if you don't like the slow build that will be a struggle, but I found that I was turning pages a bit faster by the halfway point. The writing itself was pretty well done, even if these teenagers sounded a bit pretentious at times. I'm intrigued by the way this ends and interested to see what happens next. Going in I didn't realize this was a series so it will be interesting to see what the next book is actually going to be about. There were enough loose ends here but I feel like it could maybe have been wrapped up in one installment.
I think that fans of The Craft might find this an interesting read.

Sadie has spent the last few years trying to make ends meet for both her and her sister, but that’s easier said than done. During the day she’s a waitress in the evening she’s checking out her next mark. She’s sure she just needs to do this one last job and it will keep them comfortable long enough for her to save some money and leave a life of cons and robbery behind and then she can focus on getting her sister better.
Jake Callahan has only focused on one thing since the day his father was taken away to jail Revenge. He finally got all the pieces in place to destroy the man who destroyed his father and he won’t let anything get in his way least of all the girl who happens to be messing with his plans. Erin Brewster is teaching at Hawthorne Hill, an all boys school. She grew up at this school spending summers and breaks with her grandfather, so she always knew she wanted to come back someday. But she never knew one of the hardest things would be fighting an attraction to a blue eyed, broody eighteen year old. But she does instead pursuing a relationship with another faculty member one who had me questioning his intentions from the very beginning.
Zach Shepherd won’t deny that he’s attracted to his teacher, but he knows it’s inappropriate and he won’t do anything to get her in trouble. But when he graduates from college and has the opportunity to come back to Hawthorne Hill, all he can think about is if Erin is still there and what has happened to her over the last few years and would she be open to the kind of relationship that he likes?
Okay It says right there in the summary that kink is their thing and that they bond over their shared desires. I thought this part of the story was so blah that I wish it hadn’t even been a part of it. First of all, Zach is introduced to the bdsm lifestyle while in college and working at a club he participates in scenes but that’s all. Yes. He’s a virgin. Now normally I’m game for an innocent guy who is just learning the ropes (hahaha) but this just didn’t work at all for me, and honestly, I thought the relationship between Shep and Erin was so incredibly tepid that I never really bought this crazy attraction they were supposed to have for each other.
Erin’s supposed to be a smart girl and I say supposed to be because honestly her relationship and resulting marriage was the most ridiculous thing ever. First of all, the fact that she married this guy simply because she got pregnant. No. Second of all, she stayed with him even though she lost that baby. No. I mean the guy was fucking his other lady the day that she had to be rushed to the hospital. I mean seriously. It took her three years to get this asshole out of her life and then he just completely disappears. You never hear another thing about him which is nice if a bit unusual for romance books.
What did I like? Well, I liked that we get to see Shep & Erin form a relationship instead of just jumping into bed with each other. Though, admittedly, I think that the author waited way too long to have these two finally do it.
As you can probably tell, this just wasn’t my favorite, and it’s hard when you read a book you really loved right before picking one like this up.
If you’re looking for a slow burn kind of romance with hints HINTS of bdsm then maybe give this one a try!

The third book in the series focuses on Reese, the leader of the town of outlaws and Sloane her trusty second hand man and Rylan, the seemingly carefree guy who is only interested in fighting and screwing.
First, I’ve loved Rylan from the very first book for reasons but in this book we find out so much more about his past and the things that have shaped him into who he is. We’ve also learned bits and pieces about both Reese and Sloane as well, and I became incredibly intrigued by their situation/relationship in the last book because you know they obviously care for each other, but there are things that are keeping them apart.
Who knew Rylan would be the person to bring them all together.
Of course, the steam in this book is off the charts. Rylan, Reese and Sloane are combustible and their connection is undeniable. However, if I had one complaint, I think I feel like the bond was built a bit more between Sloane and Rylan than it was between Rylan and Reese. And maybe complaint isn’t the right word because for the most part, I was all in with this threesome, but I think I just felt the emotional connection more between Sloane and Rylan. And honestly there’s nothing wrong with that, but I think I wanted more vulnerability from Reese with the guys.
It was wonderful to find out the story behind Jake and what happened between him, Sloane and Reese and see what it was that really brought them to where their relationship is the denial of anything between them, but the utter devotion to each other was hard to understand until the full story came out.
I’m also super happy that there was some very definite plot progression in this installment the outlaws are definitely making their plays and the war is getting closer so it will be interesting to see who the next book is about and where this group finds themselves.
There is a ton of action and I mean that in all kinds of ways. If you’re a fan of this series, you’re definitely not going to be disappointed.
If you haven’t started this series and you’re a fan of erotica, I urge you to give it a try! I promise Elle Kennedy writes wonderfully emotional, sexy characters and the overarching story is intriguing and well-paced. I’m definitely looking forward to the next in this series!

I had huge expectations.
Huge.
I’m here to tell you that all expectations were met and more!
Max Deacon is known around town as the fun guy he’s not looking for a relationship, but if you’re down for some fun, then he’s your man. No strings and hot sex. And he’s been happy with the status quo, hooking up with ready and willing women, but suddenly he can’t seem to get his mind off someone who is completely off limits.
Angelica “Fitz Hawkins is Nate’s half-sister. She’s never quite felt welcome in the small town she’s been forced to grow up in. After the unexpected death of her mom and dad, she’s struggled with the sidelong looks the people have given her as well as the less than warm welcome the friends of her half siblings have given her.
Deke and Fitz have become best friends over the years though, and along with that friendship, some additional feelings have risen to the surface. Though the fear of Nate’s wrath is strong, in the end it doesn’t deter them from acting on their attraction for each other. Now Fitz is looking to escape the judging eyes of the town and she finds she can’t confide this to Deke and she won’t let her feelings for him sidetrack her plans either.
I don’t know what it is about Doyle’s guys actually, I think I do. I think I love that they aren’t at all afraid to share their vulnerability and emotions. These very manly men are totally okay with laying it all on the line for the women they are falling for and that is so incredibly sexy to me. And the ladies she creates are relatable and fun and dare I say this not at all annoying.
Doyle’s writing paced wonderfully and the story flows perfectly. I loved the extra glimpses we got of Nate and Dorie in this! Baseball is still a part of the story as well, since Fitz runs Nate’s foundation and in addition to the pro players, we get to see some moments where Deke is coaching the town little league team *swoon*.
I also really liked that we got to know a bit more about Mama Gin I thought it was a bit weird that in the first book we know she’s Nate’s mom but there was very little interaction between them, so it was a welcome change for this second book. I love that we find out a bit more about why she stepped up and adopted Fitz after the death of her ex.
There is some back and forth in this one, mostly because these two are best friends and Fitz really struggles with the idea that if things go south between them, she could lose the one person she’s learned she can count on over the years, and that scares her. It was completely understandable, and while some may find it annoying, I found Fitz’s struggles with this believeable and it totally worked for this story.
I know I mentioned it in my first review, but fans of Jill Shalvis really will find this series completely enjoyable! If you’re looking for books with that small-town feel, a story filled with tough, sexy & sweet guys strong and independent women, and a story that you’ll find yourself completely invested in, then look no further. I loved that there was a bit of a mystery to this story Emery is searching for clues about the night her cousin disappeared. There are a couple of very apparent suspects but she’s still hoping that she’s alive somewhere, she just needs the lead that will provide the answers. When she finally finds Wren, it’s not the lead she had hoped for, but his connections and talents might provide useful in other ways getting the answers she needs.
Neither can deny the physical spark between them, but Emery won’t let Wren in if he doesn’t start sharing who he really is, and Wren surprisingly shares more with her than he has with anyone ever. I really think my favorite parts in this book were when Emery and Wren were getting to know each other there is a bit of a running joke that Wren is very stoic and unemotional and not quite human. Mostly because Wren is used to getting his way and not having to ask permission when he makes a decision for someone, and he tends to make a lot of decisions for Emery instead of with Emery, and she doesn’t let him get away with it.
Despite the seriousness it really provided a bit of cute to their budding relationship.
Like I said, the mystery here was an added bonus, and I loved the twists and turns and while I had an inkling of suspicion at who was responsible for her cousin’s disappearance, Dimon really provides some feasible suspects that will have you guessing until the end.

This is absolutely my favorite Sierra Kincade book and that is saying a lot because I really, really loved her Body Works Trilogy. (Alec anyone??)
Two years ago Marsella Talent ran from her life and everything in it with her father’s ledger filled with information that the police and her father’s men want to get their hands on. On her own with nothing to her name, she knows she has to make her own way and stay on the down low if she wants to survive.
Jake never expects to actually see Marsella again, no matter how much he had hoped he would. His inadvertently helping her escape the night of the bust has put him in a tough spot, and when he encounters Cassie, a gorgeous woman who resembles the missing Marsella, he knows he has to find out more about her. He never counts on not being able to resist falling for her.
Forsaken has a little bit of everything you guys! Is this a romance? You bet Is this erotica I would definitely say YES but there are also mystery and thriller elements that had me guessing from page to page and I absolutely love a good mystery that I can’t predict!
Once again Kincade has created some wonderful characters. Marsella is a pretty kick ass heroine if I must say so. I think what I loved most about her was how determined she was. Whether it was getting her father’s attention or surviving when you’ve lost everything, she got shit done and I loved it. And Jake *sigh* he’s so torn and I couldn’t help but fall for him from the get go.
These two together are explosive and their situation makes everything so intense and just takes it all to another level and as a reader you can’t help but become immersed in everything going on. I seriously could not put this book down once I started it.
If you’re a fan of thrillers with steamy, sexy romance and characters you’ll want to know more about immediately you’re going to want to grab this immediately.
I know that I’m dying to get my hands on the next book in this series because COLE!!
