Who Will Be Saved? 19401876

¡°Who will be saved?¡± is almost always a question about them, and rarely about us. Thinking itself wrapped securely in the everlasting arms, the church has spent much of its history speculating on whether God will allow anyone else to join the party.

But if we truly believe that salvation is God¡¯s business, and God¡¯s alone, then perhaps we should stop asking, ¡°Who will be saved?¡± and ask instead, ¡°How is God calling me to participate in the redemption of the world?¡± Rejecting the idea that God chooses some and not others, drawing on his Wesleyan heritage, and deepening his longstanding theological conversation with Karl Barth, Willimon reflects as a pastor and a theologian on God's intention that all would someday return from the far country into the loving embrace of the One who created them.]]>

<![CDATA[The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid]]> 39294165
By the time of his death at the age of only twenty-one, he had shot and killed eight men.

Through the course of his life he terrorized large areas of the New Mexico, Arizona and northern Mexico, stealing cattle, killing law officers and escaping from justice.

In 1878 the Lincoln County War had erupted in New Mexico as rival factions fought over the control of dry goods and cattle interests in the country. The Kid was one of the few men to survive the shootout at the Battle of Lincoln and in its aftermath was forced to become an outlaw.

Two years later, Pat Garrett was elected sheriff of Lincoln county, and began his hot pursuit of the Kid shortly afterwards.

Garrett¡¯s account is a thrilling memoir that captures life in the Old West perfectly.

Billy¡¯s twenty-one years of life are described in brilliant detail by his old adversary. From his earliest years to his first killing through to his involvement in the Lincoln County War and finally up to his demise at the gunpoint of Garrett and his posse.

Particularly interesting is the story of the Kid¡¯s final escape from justice and Garrett¡¯s subsequent chase to capture the young man that had caused so much destruction.

It is remarkable book that uncovers the short and violent life of one of the most famous gunslingers in history.

Pat Garrett was an American Old West lawman, bartender and customs agent who became renowned for killing Billy the Kid. His book, The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid was published in 1882 and popularized the story of the famous outlaw. He was eventually murdered under unclear circumstances in 1908.]]>

I liked this one better than Drury Lane #1. It's an Ellery Queen novel, and has the pluses and minuses of those books. I think the clues might allow some to figure out who dune it, although not me as usual. The tragedy of Y is that he and his whole family had VD in the days before it was curable. Not that that diagnosis is actually used, just hinted at. So a bit different than most Ellery Queen novels right there - but not that much different.

<![CDATA[Come Forth: The Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle]]> 61150728 One of America's most beloved spiritual leaders and the New York Times bestselling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything and Learning to Pray examines one of the most intriguing events in the New Testament--the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead--and explains its significance for us today.

In this wise and thoughtful book, Father James Martin, SJ, analyzes the miracle of Lazarus's resurrection and asks us to consider what Jesus means when he calls Lazarus--and each of us--to "come forth." Taking us through the Gospel story verse by verse, he offers deep reflection on the lessons it holds about love, family, sadness, frustration, fear, anger, freedom, and joy.

Come Forth combines compelling analysis of the biblical text, insights about the historical setting of the story, meditations on Lazarus in art and the larger culture, as well as stories of Martin's personal experiences. As he explores these strands in-depth, Martin offers us a deeper understanding of this miracle and its essential message--letting go of the limiting beliefs that prevent us from experiencing God in all His glory.

"All of us have things that we need to 'let die' in order to follow God more freely, to love more deeply, and to become the people whom God desires us to be," Martin writes. As this wise and profound book reveals, we need only to open ourselves to the transformative story of Lazarus and trust that God can use it to free us to experience new life--and come closer to Him.]]>

Double Twist (Mia Murphy, #1) 60056473
A high-octane, feel-good romp starring women you'll wish were your best friends, an inconveniently attractive cop, a posse of gray-haired quilters with a fondness for margaritas, and an eccentric town with more secrets than Mia's con artist mom.

All Mia Murphy wants is an ordinary, law-abiding life.

Accidentally marrying a drug kingpin? Easily fixed with an anonymous tip to the FBI¡which resulted in a not-so-voluntary, surprisingly stressful stint as an undercover spy against him.

But with her ex finally in prison and assassins in her rearview mirror, Mia is off to Diamond Lake in Bass Derby, Maine with King Tut, her rescue (aka purloined) cat, to start over.

Upon arrival, Mia quickly finds a couple of soulmates in a blue-haired "I'll show you what old is" caf¨¦ owner and a baton-twirling mail carrier. Life is headed in the right direction...until the trio stumbles across a dead body during a slightly illegal but well-intentioned home invasion.

When one of her new besties is arrested for the murder, Mia is the only one with the skills to ferret out the real killer¡but she can't afford to resurrect her morally flexible past. Can Mia keep her life on the straight and narrow with so much at stake? Or will a homicidal, jet-skiing moose, a dead Mr. January firefighter, and an overzealous mayor take them all down?

Mia has to step up, or she'll lose her chance for the life she's always wanted and the friends she's never had. Even worse, she might wind up dead¡]]>

I liked the book. Hammett does the unusual of not telling us what characters are thinking, so one has to go with what they and others say. Because of that, it's hard to get a good feel for them. It is however safe to say that virtually everyone in this book is corrupt. The amount of sex and violence does makes this a pre-code sort of book. I read it as part of a book club, and most thought the book had a lot of brutality. And it did, rather hardboiled no-nonsense violence. And not old fashion tv violence, but violence with consequences - like characters needing false teeth after one scene. This IMHO definitely doesn't glorify violence, but does present it.

<![CDATA[Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire, and Revolution in the Borderlands]]> 58999198 Bad Mexicans tells the dramatic story of the magonistas, the migrant rebels who sparked the 1910 Mexican Revolution from the United States. Led by a brilliant but ill-tempered radical named Ricardo Flores Mag¨®n, the magonistas were a motley band of journalists, miners, migrant workers, and more, who organized thousands of Mexican workers¡ªand American dissidents¡ªto their cause. Determined to oust Mexico¡¯s dictator, Porfirio D¨ªaz, who encouraged the plunder of his country by U.S. imperialists such as Guggenheim and Rockefeller, the rebels had to outrun and outsmart the swarm of U. S. authorities vested in protecting the Diaz regime. The U.S. Departments of War, State, Treasury, and Justice as well as police, sheriffs, and spies, hunted the magonistas across the country. Capturing Ricardo Flores Mag¨®n was one of the FBI¡¯s first cases.

But the magonistas persevered. They lived in hiding, wrote in secret code, and launched armed raids into Mexico until they ignited the world¡¯s first social revolution of the twentieth century.

Taking readers to the frontlines of the magonista uprising and the counterinsurgency campaign that failed to stop them, Kelly Lytle Hern¨¢ndez puts the magonista revolt at the heart of U.S. history. Long ignored by textbooks, the magonistas threatened to undo the rise of Anglo-American power, on both sides of the border, and inspired a revolution that gave birth to the Mexican-American population, making the magonistas¡¯ story integral to modern American life.]]>

I have no informed opinion on the facts in this book. They seem accurate, but I sure can't say one way or the other. It is an interesting account of the years leading up to the Mexican Revolution. The book features the story of Ricardo Flores Mag¨®n, who is buried in the Mexican "Rotonda de las Personas Ilustres". I mention this only to show us uninformed folks North of Mexico that they consider him important. Usually Mexican history in the USA consists of The Sante Fe Trail, the Texas Mexican Civil War, the USA - Mexican War, and Pancho Villa. Thanks to May 5th drinkers, we in the USA know that for some reason the French were in Mexico. All of this is here just to prove I have no informed opinion.
I found this a very interesting take on this part of Mexican history, and I expect to read more on the Revolution and on US-Mexican relationships.

I decided to read all the Baum Oz books in order. This would be my third book - #3 in the series. I've read some of them before - decades back. Ozma takes the title role, but everyone, or most of them, are back. Dorothy is here, when she is swept away while on a trip to Australia. At the end of the book, Dorothy is back in Australia, but with a very clever way to get back to Oz, if she needs to. The star of the book however is a little yellow hen, who travels with Dorothy. Lays an egg daily, but not interested in raising young. I'd have to say that this is, so far, the best of the 3 - but one does have to read the others first to get here.

3 Stars means I liked it. I've read probably a quarter to a half of the Ellery Queen series, and I wondered if this one was written by ghost writers - like many of the later ones were. Probably not, and the difference between this and the earlier ones is the Queens trying something different. Difference in this case means more wordage, more attempts at psychoanalysis, and no "you've got the clues - solve the mystery." More action, less deduction. Why Queen actually goes to Vienna to see a Freudian style psychiatrist.

<![CDATA[The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity]]> 56269264
For generations, our remote ancestors have been cast as primitive and childlike¡ªeither free and equal innocents, or thuggish and warlike. Civilization, we are told, could be achieved only by sacrificing those original freedoms or, alternatively, by taming our baser instincts. David Graeber and David Wengrow show how such theories first emerged in the eighteenth century as a conservative reaction to powerful critiques of European society posed by Indigenous observers and intellectuals. Revisiting this encounter has startling implications for how we make sense of human history today, including the origins of farming, property, cities, democracy, slavery, and civilization itself.

Drawing on pathbreaking research in archaeology and anthropology, the authors show how history becomes a far more interesting place once we learn to throw off our conceptual shackles and perceive what¡¯s really there. If humans did not spend 95 percent of their evolutionary past in tiny bands of hunter-gatherers, what were they doing all that time? If agriculture, and cities, did not mean a plunge into hierarchy and domination, then what kinds of social and economic organization did they lead to? The answers are often unexpected, and suggest that the course of human history may be less set in stone, and more full of playful, hopeful possibilities, than we tend to assume.

The Dawn of Everything fundamentally transforms our understanding of the human past and offers a path toward imagining new forms of freedom, new ways of organizing society. This is a monumental book of formidable intellectual range, animated by curiosity, moral vision, and a faith in the power of direct action.]]>

Whether serving in the United States Army in World War II, or during his burgeoning career as a teenage comedian in the Catskills, Mel was always mining his experiences for material, always looking for the perfect joke. His iconic career began with Sid Caesar¡¯s Your Show of Shows, where he was part of the greatest writers¡¯ room in history, which included Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and Larry Gelbart. After co-creating both the mega-hit 2000 Year Old Man comedy albums and the classic television series Get Smart, Brooks¡¯s stellar film career took off. He would go on to write, direct, and star in The Producers, The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, and Spaceballs, as well as produce groundbreaking and eclectic films, including The Elephant Man, The Fly, and My Favorite Year. Brooks then went on to conquer Broadway with his record-breaking, Tony-winning musical, The Producers.

The choices of the Queens is more "Slapstick Queens seen on TV in the 1960s", thus the early silent Queens are missing. One could argue who should be here and who shoudn't - and that is why my rating is ok, rather than liked. If you like these particular queens more than I, then you'll rate these bios better than I. On Conan Doyle 12794324 On Conan Doyle is a highly engaging personal introduction to Holmes's creator, as well as a rare insider's account of the curiously delightful activities and playful scholarship of The Baker Street Irregulars.

Because Arthur Conan Doyle wrote far more than the mysteries involving Holmes, this book also introduces readers to the author's lesser-known but fascinating writings in an astounding range of other genres. A prolific professional writer, Conan Doyle was among the most important Victorian masters of the supernatural short story, an early practitioner of science fiction, a major exponent of historical fiction, a charming essayist and memoirist, and an outspoken public figure who attacked racial injustice in the Congo, campaigned for more liberal divorce laws, and defended wrongly convicted prisoners. He also wrote novels about both domestic life and contemporary events (including one set in the Middle East during an Islamic uprising), as well as a history of World War I, and, in his final years, controversial tracts in defense of spiritualism.

On Conan Doyle describes all of these achievements and activities, uniquely combining skillful criticism with the story of Dirda's deep and enduring affection for Conan Doyle and his work. This is a book for everyone who already loves Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and the world of 221B Baker Street, or for anyone who would like to know more about them, but it is also a much-needed celebration of Arthur Conan Doyle's genius for every kind of storytelling.

The legend of the Lost Colony has been captivating imaginations for nearly a century. When they left Roanoke Island, where did they go? What is the meaning of the mysterious word Croatoan? In the sixteenth century, Croatoan was the name of an island to the south now known as Hatteras. Scholars have long considered the island as one of the colonists' possible destinations, but only recently has anyone set out to prove it. Archaeologists from the University of Bristol, working with local residents through the Croatoan Archaeological Society, have uncovered tantalizing clues to the fate of the colony. The conclusion to what happened to the Lost Colony presented in this book, is pretty much what I thought had happened. It is also presented very well. Which pretty much explains my rating. I have not read any scholarly rebuttals of this material, nor even checked to see if any was done, so this is not a review of how true it is, but how it is presented. And as noted. I thought it was presented very well.

Fun read, which I did in one day. Published in 1931, it's hard to know exactly what are regular things lost to history, and oddities. I assume that putting a block of ice on a car's running board to get the block home is an oddity; but if having to figure out what was quaint then is not something you want to do, then this book isn't for you. I had figured out the culprit long before the end, but had missed some of the clues proving it. For those concerned: no modern cussing, no drugs, there is recreational smoking, no sex (but secondary characters have in the past), doesn't like organized labor, police are presented as idiots. None are those are strong enough for me to change my rating. I do plan to read some more of her work.

For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn¡¯t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?

Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man¡¯s life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final ¡°class¡±: lessons in how to live.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie¡¯s lasting gift with the world.

These 21st Century translations were suggested to me as a great way to experience Verne, without the abridgements and interesting word changes of earlier translations. I can't compare translations, but found this one to be quite good, and certainly both funnier and more exciting that I was expecting from Verne. Good enough that I'm going to try another recent translation of Verne. Plot is that 3 guys from the UK attempt a balloon flight from Africa's east coast to the west coast. They relied on written reports from earlier explorers, but such things as the headwaters of the Nile weren't yet established as fact when this was written in 1862. There is a list and descriptions of explorers, mentioned by Verne, in the back of the book. Also a map in the center - which may be a spoiler to some. And speaking of SPOILERS:

Possibly the best book on the Lincoln County War, I haven't read them all so I can't be definitive on that. Some new info on Billy the Kid's boyhood has come to life since this was written, but this is not a book on Billy. It is instead one of those books proving truth is often stranger than fiction. Image Amazon vs Walmart with gunmen, lawmen trying to serve warrants on other lawmen, who were trying to serve warrants on them. And of course, theft and corruption as the only way to make a comfortable living. However this book spents less time up on the shooting war, and more on what led to the war - good for my reading, but if you like less on the why, you might like it less than I.

My first try at a Miss Silver novel. She's an analytical crime solver in (lets face it) the mode of Sherlock Holmes. Set in the UK during World War 2, there are plenty of home front activities, and Miss Silver is knitting a pair of socks for her nephew in the service.

ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Richard Flint is the coeditor of The Coronado Expedition:From the Distance of 460 Years, and The Latest Word from 1540: Peoples, Places, and Portrayals of the Coronado Expedition and the author of Great Cruelties Have Been Reported: The 1544 Investigation of the Coronado Expedition (all UNM Press).

ACCLAIM
"In this well-written and engaging volume...Flint uses a wide range of individual accounts that, taken together, provide an amazingly personal description of the Coronado expedition and the responses of indigenous peoples to the encounter....This book is a much needed and fascinating look into one of the most turbulent times in the Americas....Richard Flint has achieved a rare goal in historical writing; he has produced an accessible and enjoyable book that reexamines a topic we though we knew and prompts us to look deeper." -- Montana the Magazine of Western History

"To date, there has been no better-written capsule history of this expedition." -- New Mexico Magazine

"Well written and informative, [No Settlement, No Conquest] demands the attention of readers interested in the history of the American Southwest and northwestern Mexico." -- Spanish Traces

"Well-written and detailed, this text offers readers a close look at an often misunderstood moment in Spanish colonial history." -- Southern California Quarterly

"...[a] superb volume...it belongs in every college and university library and on the book shelves of all historians of Texas and the Southwest." -- Southwestern Historical Quarterly

"The Harvard scholar Richard Marius once wrote that good historical writing gives the impression that the author has worked tremendously hard to learn something and is giving an authoritative guided tour of the knowledge he has attained. This is exactly what Richard Flint's narrative of the Coronado expedition does....No Settlement, No Conquest is...a vibrant, thought-provoking portrait of a colonial society in transition and it deserves the attention of students and scholars alike." -- Hispanic American Historical Review

"Flint's commendable work on the Coronado entrada has gone a long way toward clearing up the sixteenth-century Spanish effort in North America." -- The Journal of Southern History

"No Settlement, No Conquest is an enjoyable read for the clarity of the prose and the many fascinating details that Flint offers with respect to the participants in the Coronado expedition and how the expedition unfolded, leaving mostly a trail of destruction in its wake." -- New Mexico Historical Review

"For those interested in early colonial history, Flint provides and accessible and engaging narrative of the difficulties that plagued this large undertaking and how it shaped the history of the Southwest.]]>

Growing up in the southeast, I heard nothing about the Cornado Entrada in school. Going to an event which included recent Coronado archeological explorations, I knew I needed to know about it to understand the talk. This book was extremely helpful in my understanding. I have no idea if the history is correct, this is obviously not a peer review, but I found the citations convincing. The book was also very readable. The author makes his views of the facts clearly distinct from the narrative, so even if one disagrees on his interpterion, one can still find the book useful .

As typical with an Ellery Queen novel, the writing is variable. Some of the word choice is troublesome and some excellent. The plot is pretty much what you expect from Queen - clever if at times too clever. But the Queen formula remains enjoyable. Having the amateur detective, a deaf famous actor best known for his Shakespear performances is an interesting touch.
Frankly, if you find Queen a good read, then you'll like this one too. 3 Stars - I liked it.

A history of the Scots-Irish in Tennessee as seen by a Ulster Scots-Irishman. Including much good information about where those folks came from, as well as other places where they ended up. If you're not a Tennessee Scott-Irish descendant then my rating of 4 stars is fair. If you are a descendant or cousin (like my in-laws) then this is probably a 5 to you. I spotted almost no errors, except for a tiny one on the religious affiliation of the McMichens (and I'm sure that what's written is what people told the author). I probably would have asked for more clarity on the various group, and how their presbyterianism differ from the others, but that would be a totally different book.

I gave this five stars, although I do have to admit there are some less fun parts - a particular use of the n word in a song being one. But being a book from 1913 we should expect some major changes between now and then. The 5 Stars comes from the writing style, how the story was set up, and of course, the ending.

If one believes that Edgar Allan Poe wrote the first detective story, then one realizes how early these crime stories are. Certainly, the genre was still finding it's way when these stories were published. To be frank, some of these stories are interesting only as artifacts and not as entertainment for the 21st century. If one enjoys going back into time, then these stories work well as to how writers and readers understood the new fiction of that century.

The Floating Admiral 45725242 It's "great fun" when a baker's dozen of Golden Age authors collaborate on a whodunit--including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and G. K. Chesterton (The Guardian).

Originally published in 1931, The Floating Admiral is a classic literary collaboration by members of the Detection Club, in which each chapter is written by a different mystery author, with G. K. Chesterton adding a prologue after the novel was completed. Each writer was tasked with building on what the previous writer created, without ignoring or avoiding whatever plot points had come before. Although Anthony Berkeley wrote the definitive conclusion to the mystery in his final chapter, the writers all provided their own individual solutions, each in a sealed envelope, which appear in the appendix. In the words of Dorothy L. Sayers in her introduction, the spirit of the project was that of a "detection game," for the amusement of the authors--and their readers.

In the sleepy English seaside village of Whynmouth, an old sailor discovers a corpse floating serenely in a rowboat owned by the local vicar. The victim has been stabbed in the chest. It falls to Inspector Rudge to solve this most baffling mystery, in which not only the identity of the killer but the identity of the victim is called into question.

The Floating Admiral includes contributions by Canon Victor L. Whitechurch, G. D. H. and Margaret Cole, Henry Wade, Agatha Christie, John Rhode, Milward Kennedy, Dorothy L. Sayers, Ronald A. Knox, Freeman Wills Crofts, Edgar Jepson, Clemence Dane, and Anthony Berkeley.

"I was . . . hugely entertained by the virtuoso displays of mental gymnastics, which kept me guessing all the way." --The Guardian

<![CDATA[Death of a Bounty Hunter: A Dark Fantasy Western]]> 58645610

The sheriff of Jericho offered Flint the bounty, but the contract originated from a murkier source¡ªthe Duskfinders, a secret society with ties to the Occult. Still, Flint accepted. Hunting bounties defined him. His reputation distracted bigots from the unique shape of his good eye and gawkers from the ocular implant that replaced the other. Most everyone figured Flint was just another badass in the sheriff's posse of dubious freaks, but he wasn¡¯t beholden to that crew. He was a loner. Set his own path.

Autonomy ain¡¯t worth a damn, though, when a plan goes straight to hell, when a split-second decision triggers an avalanche of trouble. Now, as the lawman who hired him spirals into madness and a paranormal stalker demands penance, Flint¡¯s shame and guilt will force him to make a choice: run or fight.

Death of a Bounty Hunter draws intriguing characters into a plot that captivates readers with twists and turns all the way up to its deadly conclusion. A mashup of dark fantasy, steampunk, and weird western genres, it earned a semifinalist spot in ScreenCraft¡¯s Cinematic Book Competition.

This is a can¡¯t-miss, epic tale full of heart and grit from Amazon top-selling authors Jay Sherer and Nathan Scheck.]]>

I liked it well enough. It is old, so beware of those altitudes that make the past a different country. And this book is thick with the specialness of the high society born. But even high society can commit murder -although the book ends before we know if the killer go to a high society specialty jail. Oh, there are snide comments about those not high born. If you can put up with that sort of theme, the book is fast reading, puzzle semi-fair. Who dun it is fairly clear, but catching the clues is probably hard for most readers, or at least for me. I liked some of the oddness of the theme of the sun worshiper.

First in the series that I've read. As noted by everyone else, Keller is a hired killer - who is good at his job. I was familiar with some of Block's work, but I would not have deliberately picked to read a book about this topic. Indeed I usually read mysteries of the 192s- 1950s, and have started reading some cozies. This is not a cozy. On the other hand, this is not a book for those looking for torture and sadism either. Keller is not completely amoral, and indeed uses various psychological techniques to decrease any emotions he may have about his job.
Some problems involved with making the various vignettes and episodes into a novel keeps me from saying it's perfect 5 - but it is close to it. Close enough that I'll add some more Block to my reading, even if I dont look for another in this series.

Ellery Queen and his dad, the Inspector Queen, are vacationing when a massive fire forces them into a mansion on top of a mountain. And yes there are Siamese twins in the book. I have mixed feelings about this book. On the plus side, it's a very fast read, with plenty of excitement. The solution to the murder is both obvious and oblique - so well done. And yes there is a map of the house. The negative side is that it hasn't aged as well as some books of its age (1933), and I was flabbergasted that a area that has too many rocks to do improvements can be able to be turned into a deep and wide ditch by amateurs with shovels in a day. Yes, that's a minor flaw. However, the characterization is weak, and the Queens actually come off as unlikeable. My usual note for GoodReads, is that by definition 3 stars here means I liked it. So this would be a favorable review.
