Great premise; supernatural sleuth with Ghostbuster themes just darker. A damaged protagonist and an interesting concept for solving cases. The opening stanza had me excited...and then the action kicked in and didn't stop until curtain call; what should've been great became a long action orientated sequence with repetitive tag lines over the course of hundreds of pages. Oh what could've been...

Spine tingling vignettes of true horror in hospitals and aged care health facilities. Skews heavily towards Hollywood fiction with well known ghost tropes but the engaging accounts make up for it. A minor gripe with the last chapter not fitting the theme but overall a decent collection.

All About Eden 11934422
I have a much better relationship with Eden now that she doesn’t remember who I am.

She called me a little over a year ago, asking me to come down to Palm Springs. She said she needed me again. That was the last time I was really sure she knew me. There’ve been moments since then. A certain look, or something left unsaid. But those moments are fleeting and far between. Nothing like that call.

“Melanie, she said when I picked up the phone that night. “Baby, I got a little problem.

An aging transgendered woman is willing to do anything for love in ALL ABOUT EDEN, a 3000 word hardboiled short story.

The Wandering Earth 42684835
It can be terrifying to contemplate the end of our world and stories that describe such destruction can be disturbing. At the same time however, they can leave us feeling not only entertained, but exhilarated and inspired. Maybe, they can even give us a chance to renew our love of life. Most stories found in the “The Wandering Earth collection take us to a sci-fi vision of Earth's end. But here, there are no Hollywood aliens, descending from the depths of space to blow up our cities. In these futures, the dangers humanity faces are much stranger and whimsical than that. The unexpected calamities that befall his richly detailed worlds are only eclipsed by humanity's epic, but always plausible, attempts to escape destruction.

In all this peril and doom, Liu Cixin always feels for humanity. His stories are full of a deep love for all of Earth's peoples. But even this love does not escape reflection and even ridicule when viewed through his unrelenting cosmic lens. No matter how dearly one loves the Earth, humanity and all its cultures, there is no avoiding the cold, hard truth that they mean absolutely nothing when viewed against the vastness of the universe. But even an infinite universe could not change the simple fact that we are worthy of love, that we need love. It is this twist that lies at the very heart of the stories in this collection.

A Killing on the Hill 181840722 The Great Depression. High-level corruption. And a murder that’s about to become Seattle’s hottest mystery. It’s the kind of story that can make a reporter’s career. If he lives to write about it.

Seattle, 1933. The city is in the grips of the Great Depression, Prohibition, and vice. Cutting his teeth on a small-time beat, hungry and ambitious young reporter William “Shoe Shumacher gets a tip that could change his career. There’s been a murder at a social club on Profanity Hill—an underworld magnet for vice crimes only a privileged few can afford. The story is going to be front-page news, and Shoe is the first reporter on the scene.

The victim, Frankie Ray, is a former prizefighter. His accused killer? Club owner and mobster George Miller, who claims he pulled the trigger in self-defense. Soon the whole town’s talking, and Shoe’s first homicide is fast becoming the Trial of the Century. The more Shoe digs, the more he’s convinced nothing is as it seems. Not with a tangle of conflicting stories, an unlikely motive, and witnesses like Miller’s girlfriend, a glamour girl whose pretty lips are sealed. For now.

In a city steeped in old west debauchery, Shoe’s following every lead to a very dangerous place—one that could bring him glory and fame or end his life.]]>

Kill River 27259367
In the summer of 1983, thirteen-year-old Cyndi and her three new-found friends Stacy, Zack, and Brad decide to sneak away from their summer camp in the middle of the night by rafting down the nearby rivers. After spending a tense night lost in the woods, the four teenagers stumble into a mysterious water park that appears to be completely empty.

At first, they are thrilled to have the rides all to themselves, at least until one of them disappears. Soon they discover that they are trapped in the park, and a dark figure is stalking them from the shadows, picking them off one by one. Once night falls, Cyndi will have to fight to escape the park, a masked maniac, and a living nightmare.

Kill River is a wild water park ride filled with blood, gore, and '80s nostalgia. Slasher fans rejoice, old-school horror is back!]]>

Catchpenny 186872389
"I absolutely loved it. Catchpenny is a brilliant book, full of heart and the language is pitch-perfect. If Elmore Leonard had ever written a fantasy novel, this would be it. —Stephen King

Sidney Catchpenny has had a bad run. Laid low by a years-long bout of debilitating depression, he’s all but squandered his reputation as one of the most uniquely talented thieves in LA. There aren’t many who can do what Sid does. He’s a sly , a special kind of crook with the uncanny ability to move through mirrors. And the spoils he’s after are equally unusual. Forget jewels and cold cash—Sid steals curiosities items imbued with powerful mojo , a magical essence gleaned from the accumulated emotion that seeps into interesting, though often banal objects. That spot on the carpet where your old dog used to lay at your feet? The passed-down family heirloom nobody wants but everybody refuses to throw away? These curiosities are full of mojo, which is both the currency of the criminal underground and the secret source of magic in the world.

When a friend from Sid’s past comes looking for his help with an important client, and the chance to pay off old debts presents itself, Sid seizes the opportunity as best he can. But the case he stumbles into is more complicated than it seems, and it portends a seismic shift in the world, one that will leave no one untouched. As the fog of his depression begins to lift, Sid sees connections everywhere he looks, and the once disparate threads of the case—a missing teenage girl, an entire bedroom saturated with mojo, and Sid’s own long-dead wife—begin to coalesce.]]>

<![CDATA[Lush and other tales of Boozy Mayhem]]> 163862320
If you’re in the mood for mayhem, you’ve come to the right place, pal. Cozy up to the bar and let Duane Swierczynski spin you a yarn. I’ll warn ya, though; these eighteen tales aren’t for the faint of heart. You’ll find crime, science fiction and plenty of horror in these pages . . . and rest assured, he isn’t afraid to serve up the hard stuff.

As Duane notes in his Stories have always been an escape for me, just like a couple of stiff drinks at the end of the day. Both are methods of altering your personal reality, even just for a little while. We invite you to escape into Duane’s wild world of high-octane (and high-proof) short fiction, where you’ll experience . . . A journalist landing an interview with Philadelphia’s last hardboiled P.I., the hunt for a pulp writer’s lost manuscript, the downside of finding out that death isn’t the end, the dangers of ignoring a Polish death curse, a new twist on serving time for crimes committed, a cross-country trek under the watchful eye of a killer, a particularly dangerous film print, lawbreakers in a future where technology has tamed the L.A. freeway system, and a whole lot more . . . Gird your brain and your liver . . . it’s time for Lush and Other Tales of Boozy Mayhem .
Praise for Duane Swierczynski “Duane Swierczynski knows how to slam it down on the table. His tales are up there with the best of them. John Carpenter “Of all the modern noirists, who has the most fun by far with the furniture, the tropes and the beleaguered, doomed characters? Duane Swierczynski, that’s who. You will too. Duane actually did the footwork, the legwork, and the hardboiled coursework, from inky-stained newsprint journalism to dead-of-night fictioneering as though he Tarzan’d from The Front Page to Black Mask without skipping a quip, a kill, or a deal gone bad. Read all about it, right here. David J. Schow “This guy is a great storyteller. I never know what he is going to come up with or where he is going to take me. Michael Connelly "Duane Swierczynski writes the 'new noir,' full of bad choices, courage, and sudden disaster, all delivered at a break-neck pace." Charlaine Harris “Lean as a starving model, mean as a snake, and fast as a jet. This guy has got to be the hottest new thing in crime fiction." Joe R. Lansdale “Crime fiction doesn’t get much weirder. Publisher’s Weekly “Enough gut-churning violence to make a Quentin Tarantino movie look like a Disney musical replete with singing candlesticks. Chicago Tribune “[ Fun and Games ] could not be more perfect. It’s got the pounding rhythm of a West Coast punk band on crystal meth. If you like a relentless sleaze-action read then you are going to lov, and I mean L-O-V this. Simon Le Bon, Duran Duran]]>

<![CDATA[A People's History of the Vampire Uprising]]> 39344329 A virus that turns people into something somehow more than human quickly sweeps the world, upending society as we know it.

This panoramic thriller begins with one small mystery. The body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, walks out of the town morgue. To the young CDC investigator called in to consult the local police, it's a bizarre medical mystery.

More bodies, dead of a mysterious disease that solidifies their blood, are brought to the morgue, and disappear. In a futile game of catch-up, the CDC, the FBI, and the US government must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world.

Impossibly strong, smart, poised, beautiful, and commanding, these vampires reject the term as derogatory, preferring the euphemistic "gloamings." They quickly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society: sports, entertainment, and business. Soon people are begging to be 're-created,' willing to accept the risk of death if their bodies can't handle the transformation. The stakes change yet again when a charismatic and wealthy businessman, recently turned, decides to do what none of his kind has done before: run for political office.

This sweeping yet deeply intimate fictional oral history--told from the perspectives of several players on all sides of the titular vampire uprising--is a genre-bending, shocking, immersive and subversive debut that is as addictive as the power it describes.]]>

Much of the premise is laughable and won't appeal to many readers in this day and age, however, taken for what it is - I had a lot of fun - if not for the sheer audacity of the portrayal of Susan's character and the cookie cutter males who interacted with her. Witchcraft for Wayward Girls 223685279 'I did an evil thing to be put in here, and I'm going to have to do an evil thing to get out.'

They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they're sent to the Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened.

Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. There, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament. Rose, a hippie who insists she's going to keep her baby and escape to a commune. Zinnia, a budding musician who plans to marry her baby's father. And Holly, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.

Every moment of their waking day is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what's best for them. Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it's never given freely. There's always a price to be paid...and it's usually paid in blood.]]>

In The Dolls, this future tech comes by way of companion AI's - or to put it bluntly, life-like sex dolls. These dolls have independent thought (with in-built limitations) and can do things most humans can; homemaking, conversation, and companionship.

The problem with the dolls being a sophisticated form of AI, is the potential for them to be hacked, and, even more concerning, the potential for them to evolve and break the shackles of their creators...which is the premise of the book.

My rating: 5/5. The Dolls is fast paced, has an interestingly creepy concept and manages to make the reader establish a connection with the characters in a very short period. Ticks all the boxes for a short form of escapism. One of the better bookshots I've read. ]]>

<![CDATA[King of Thorns (Broken Empire #2)]]> 17999884 597 Mark Lawrence 0007439024 Josh 4 fantasy, own, read_2014
KING OF THORNS is really a novel of two tales. For the better part, the present day battle and attempted take-over of Jorg’s kingdom is secondary to the throw-back chapters of four years prior. Despite the aptly titled, King of Thorns, more than half is a direct sequel to PRINCE OF THORNS with a dedicated and elaborate focus on Jorg forging alliances with other amenable states in the preparation of war some three months after taking the throne. This does well to link the allegiances we see in the present day confrontation and gives context to the relationships between the newer characters introduced across the Broken Empire.

As for the ‘wedding day story arc set in the present, as the chapter title suggest, this is a single event of monolithic proportions which, not only provides Jorg with a wife and Queen to his kingdom, but a clever and strong minded companion who aides the war effort in more ways than one. Author Mark Lawrence does a great job at providing some redeemable qualities to his very tainted and horribly violent lead character the introduction of the bride-to-be helps with that.

Initially I was taken aback by the continued references to the back-story, after all there is a whole book dedicated to the Prince prior to becoming King yet as the novel progresses these chapters became more and more relevant and enhanced the present day storyline.

While the fantastical elements are obvious, the medieval, strategic warfare, and futuristic components add a nice touch to KING OF THORNS, making this one of the more enjoyable and distinct concepts in the genre.

Four years have passed since the Prince of Thorns, Jorg Ancrath forged his place atop a fractured and broken throne won with the blood of his brothers and those who dared to stand in his way. Now, the Price of Arrows threatens all that the newly proclaimed King Jorg has taken. Marching twenty thousand strong to his doorstep, the Price of Arrowshas Jorg’s number but not his thirst and talent for bloodshed. KING OF THORNS pits Jorg against a worthy foe, albeit a mere mortal who just might cut the killing king down to size. Might.

Piercing 830979 Welcome to Tokyo the side the tourists don’t see

A pulsating psycho-thriller from Ryu Murakami, author of In the Miso Soup

A renaissance man for the postmodern age, Ryu Murakami; a musician, filmmaker (Tokyo Decadence), TV personality, and award-winning author; has gained a cult following in the West. His first novel, Almost Transparent Blue, won Japan's most coveted literary prize and sold over a million copies, and his most recent psychosexual thriller, In the Miso Soup, gave readers a further taste of his incredibly agile imagination. In Piercing, Murakami, in his own unique style, explores themes of child abuse and what happens to the voiceless among us, weaving a disturbing, spare tale of two people who find each other and then are forced into hurting each other deeply because of the haunting specter of their own abuse as children.

Lady Tan's Circle of Women 199798221
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman, but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing, alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud, no lotus , they tell from adversity beauty can bloom.

But when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. Yunxian is to act like a proper wife—embroider bound-foot slippers, recite poetry, give birth to sons, and stay forever within the walls of the family compound, the Garden of Fragrant Delights.

How might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these efforts? A captivating story of women helping each other, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a triumphant reimagining of the life of one person who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today.]]>

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.

What Bella doesn't realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And, it might be too late to turn back...

HARRY DRESDEN WIZARD

Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses, or Other Entertainment.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things—and most don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a—well, whatever.

There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.]]>
9 Jim Butcher Josh 3
Harry is a character who is easy to like. He's funny, good at his job, and down to earth - Jim Butcher has steered clear of the sometimes seedy and pensive P.I in favor of this approach which complements the tone if this book perfectly. Whilst the supporting cast is relatively stock-standard; a cop and a journalist, the magical element adds a vampire madam and a mystical gatekeeper of sorts, and perhaps best of all, is a spirit bound to a skull - each is well written and adds a little something in their own way.

The linear plot made it easy to concentrate on the story with little by way of deviation, it's a kind of fast food for the mind, easily consumable and a quick read (or listen). I'll definitely check out more books in the series.

Harry Dresden is a refreshingly atypical private investigator; a wizard who doesn’t take himself too seriously. In Storm Front, Harry’s dismal job prospects get a boost with two cases thrown his way in quick succession. The first takes him to a brutal murder scene courtesy of the Chicago P.D where a man and woman have been killed in the act of sex their hearts seeming to explode from inside their bodies. The second is a little more subdued; a missing husband, having walked out on wife for no apparent reason. The wife, concerned for her husband’s safety contacts Harry hoping he can find some answers.

My rating: 3.5/5 stars

<![CDATA[Sin Hellcat: Collection of Classic Erotica - Book 22]]> 30239229
Well, it's corrected now. SIN HELLCAT, like its fellows, has both names on the cover. And our names, not the ones we donned for our work in the world of paperback erotica.

When the two of us were starting out as writers, we both served an apprenticeship writing erotic novels for Harry Shorten at Midwood Books and Bill Hamling at Nightstand. (I was Sheldon Lord for Midwood and Andrew Shaw for Nightstand, while Don was Alan Marshall for both publishers. Note though that the presence of either name upon a book is no guarantee that one of us wrote it. Both of us made arrangements whereby lesser writers would submit works under our names—and I know it's hard to believe that any writers were less than we were back then, but it's true.)

Well. We'd become friends in the summer of 1959, while we were living a few blocks away from each other in midtown Manhattan. I was at the Hotel Rio, on West 47th between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, and Don was a block south and several blocks west of me. Then I moved back to my parents' house in Buffalo, and Don and his wife and kid moved to Canarsie, and we wrote letters back and forth.

And at one point we decided it might be fun to do a novel together. Not by thinking it out and talking through it and, you know, collaborating in a serious artistic manner. Our method was simpler. One of us would write a chapter, and then the other would write a chapter to come after it, and back and forth, like that, until we had a book.

It worked, and by God it was fun. The first of our efforts was A GIRL CALLED HONEY, and it started when I wrote a chapter and sent it to Don. And so on, and we stopped when we had a book and sent it to Henry Morrison who sent it to Harry Shorten. We put both our names on the book, our pen names that is to say, and that's how Harry published it: by Sheldon Lord and Alan Marshall. And he included our dedication: "To Don Westlake and Larry Block, who introduced us."

It was so much fun that we did it again. This time Don wrote the first chapter, and I wrote the second. Was I still in Buffalo, and did we still send the chapters through the mail? Damned if I can remember. I think I may have been in New York by then, living with my first wife on West 69th Street. But maybe not, and what does it matter? We finished the book, we sent it in, Midwood published it, and we shared the advance, which was probably $600 for A GIRL CALLED HONEY, but may have escalated to $750 by the time we did SO WILLING. So each of us wound up with either $300 or $375 for our trouble, and that's not a lot of money nowadays, and it wasn't a lot of money in 1960 either, but neither was it a lot of trouble.

Damn, those were good days.

Never mind. Here's SIN HELLCAT—and if reading it brings you a small fraction of the fun we had writing it, you'll be back right away to scoop up A GIRL CALLED HONEY and SO WILLING.

This ebook edition of SIN HELLCAT contains as a bonus the opening chapter of Book #23 in the Collection of Classic Erotica, SO WILLING.]]>

Killers Uncut 11214202
For everyone who thinks the bad guys are so much more fun to read than the good guys, we’ve written a novel just for you.

In the annuls of modern thriller fiction, the villains always steal the show. We love to read and watch great villains. In many cases, they’re the best, most entertaining parts of our books, so it only made sense to write a book featuring every major villain we’ve ever written.

They’re all here...Lucy and Donaldson from Serial, Orson and Luther from Desert Places, Locked Doors, and Break You, Mr. K from Shaken, Alex and Charles Kork from Whiskey Sour and Rusty Nail, Isaiah from Abandon, Javier from Snowbound, and many, many more from the Crouch and Konrath/Kilborn books including Trapped, Run, Bloody Mary, Afraid, Endurance, and Shot of Tequila.

If you liked Serial Uncut, Killers Uncut is going to blow your mind, scar your soul, and scare you to death.

If you haven’t read anything by Crouch, Kilborn or Konrath, Killers Uncut is the perfect introduction to the dark side of their universe.

And if you enjoy a good bad guy (or bad girl), you’re going to love this.

Because there are twenty-one of them featured in this book.

Beyond a thrilling piece of horrifying suspense, Killers Uncut also takes the collaborative literary experiment begun in Serial and Killers to the next level, with most of the novel having been written online, where the authors could simultaneously write in real time. All bets were off, and may the best psycho win.

NOTE: The three novellas in this series are: Serial Uncut, Killers, and Birds of Prey.

These novellas are also available in a variety of compilations.

Killers Uncut = Killers + Birds of Prey.

Serial Killers Uncut = Serial Uncut + Killers + Break You + Birds of Prey.]]>

review:
21 serial killers comprise this disturbingly violent and somewhat disjointed novel each brandishing their own unique form of craft. Centralised around Luther, the story erupts in truly terrifying fashion where a younger form of the budding serial killer is bare witness to the destruction of his family at the hands of a couple of sadistic killers. From that point forward, the perspective alternates from good and bad guys alike with their respective paths intertwining in comic book like crossover fashion. While the premise is sound, some of the chapters felt a little out of place with too much time lapse between events. Other than that, it was good to read about characters who have populated the works of both Crouch and Kilborn and learn a greater insight into some of their origins and back-story. Favourites of mine include Lucy and Donaldson, the deranged and sexy scary Alice, and of course the main bad guy in Luther. Fans of both of these authors works wont be disappointed 3.5 stars.

It's all very daytime TV with events panning out as you'd logically expect. As a fan of Max Allan Collins, his mainstream crime fiction is yet to impress me, especially when compared to his Nate Heller and Quarry books. It doesn't help that the romantic aspects to plot are out of place and the dialogue super cheesy at times. BECOME AN INSTRUMENT OF DEATH?

Before his extraordinary career as a grandmaster of science fiction, Robert Silverberg honed his craft as a writer for a variety of pulp magazines, including crime digests with titles like Trapped and Guilty Detective Story Magazine. He also wrote this long-lost novel, which appeared under the pen name "Stan Vincent" in 1960 - and has never been published since.

Meet Bob McKay: once a rising star in the toniest nightclubs of Los Angeles, now a down-and-out denizen of tawdry bars where B-girls hustle drinks and brawls break out nightly. When one hustler winds up strangled, McKay lands on Death Row. Can a starlet and a sympathetic newspaper columnist clear his name before his date with the death chamber?

Featuring a new introduction by the author and three bonus stories from Guilty and Trapped, THE HOT BEAT offers readers a trip through time back to the pulp era, when a future star was making his bones with stories of murder, betrayal, and dangerous desires...]]>

review:
Del Toro and Hogan's 'The Strain' is a finely cut piece of blood red, blue veined horror served on a platter of raw worm invested intrigue. Borrowing the more traditional elements of a zombie infestation and mixing it with the mystic allure of the vampire, 'The Strain' embodies all that is survival horror - suspense, action, hopelessness, courage, and blood - lots of it. A few good men and women band together to form a resistance over the virus that is turning New York into a living non-breathing meat market courtesy of a rouge vampire hell bent on taking the world and its inhabitants for all its worth. What sets this story apart from the pack is its depth and character development - in Setrakian, a Val Helsing of sorts, we learn of his early encounters with vampires whilst imprisoned in a concentration camp during world war II. While accompanying protagonist, Eph, is a family man determined to keep his loved ones safe while convincing his superiors that the virus is an extinction level event (he's the head of a Government disease control unit) that requires drastic action to nullify the threat. Throw in a few epic fight scenes worthy of Blade fame, snippets of mysterious hunting gangs, and inner conflict and you've got one hell of a melting pot to stir anyone mildly sane crazy. I simply could not put this book down and will be reading 'The Fall' in no time at all. 4 stars.

Exorcist Falls 42437448
Chicago is gripped by terror. The Sweet Sixteen Killer is brutally murdering young women, and the authorities are baffled.

When the police are called to an affluent home in the middle of the night, they learn that a seemingly normal fourteen-year-old boy has attacked his family. The boy exhibits signs of demonic possession, and even more troublingly, he knows too much about the Sweet Sixteen killings. Father Jason Crowder, a young priest assigned to the case, must marshal his courage in order to save the boy and the entire city from the forces of evil.

But this is a darkness mankind has never encountered before. It craves more than blood. And it won’t rest until it possesses Father Crowder’s soul.

This volume brings together the original novella that started it all—Exorcist Road—and an all-new full-length novel (Exorcist Falls) for a shattering experience in supernatural terror.]]>

Beachcomber 629635
But after clandestinely making her drop-off late at night, Christy suspects she is being followed on the moonlit beach—and unwittingly runs into a new kind of terror. Now a witness at the center of a homicide investigation, Christy learns the police are hunting a serial killer they refer to as the "Beachcomber" because beautiful young women—women who in fact resemble her—have disappeared recently while vacationing at nearby beach communities. Christy doesn't know whom to fear more—a serial killer who believes she might be able to identify him, or the DePalma family, whose tentacles she can't seem to escape.

Only when she's with Luke Rand, her big surfer-dude next-door neighbor, does she feel safe. But with Luke's asking so many questions about her ex-fiance and his showing up almost too conveniently whenever danger strikes, she can't help but wonder if his interest in her is due to more than sexual attraction. <![CDATA[The Fall of the Governor: Part One (The Walking Dead #3)]]> 25716327 The third book in Robert Kirkman's New York Times bestselling series: The Walking Dead: The Fall of the Governor Part One!

The Walking Dead original novel series, set in the universe of Robert Kirkman's iconic comic book, continues with The Fall of the Governor Part One. From co-authors Kirkman, creator of the Eisner Award-winning comic as well as executive producer of AMC's blockbuster TV series, and Jay Bonansinga, Stoker Award-finalist and internationally acclaimed author, comes the gripping third novel in this richly woven, page-turning literary saga, which began with The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor.

In Rise of the Governor, uber-villain Philip Blake journeyed from his humble beginnings directly into the dark heart of the zombie apocalypse, and became the self-proclaimed leader of a small town called Woodbury. In The Road to Woodbury, an innocent traveler named Lilly Caul wound up in the terrifying thrall of Phillip Blake’s twisted, violent dictatorship within Woodbury’s ever tightening barricades.

And now, in The Fall of the Governor Part One, the Governor’s descent into madness finally erupts in a tour de force of action and horror. Beloved characters from the comic book, including Rick, Michonne and Glenn, finally make their entrance onto this nightmarish stage, and fans of The Walking Dead will see these characters in a whole new light. Simmering grudges boil over into unthinkable confrontations, battle lines are drawn, and unexpected twists seal the fates of the innocent and guilty alike.]]>

The third installment is not new reader friendly and is based on the Governor (obviously) and the cast of characters introduced in The Road to Woodbury (book #2), with a particular focus on Lilly - a character who continues to grow on me. While not a lot happens in terms of exploration into the world outside of Woodbury plenty happens within its confines.

Without spoiling, I will say that The Fall of the Governor is at times hard to read/listen. There are some overtly graphic torture scenes in the later stages of the book that almost made me switch off and fast forward but I persisted and the pay off is worth it - from a character development and a world-building perspective.

I'd give this book a solid 4/5. ]]>

Palmetto 212400448 Far too expensive for them to afford, Kim and Eddie, make an offer anyway...and score the deal of a lifetime.
The house is suddenly theirs, and Kim sees it as destiny.
The house is where they're supposed to raise their baby, joyful and free and full of nothing but the best memories. But homes--especially the perfect ones--are never what they seem. Before Kim and Eddie are even moved in, something begins to squirm beneath Kim's skin.
Something portentous. A warning. Don't buy this house.
But she ignores her misgivings.
As if sensing its mother's foreboding, the baby begins to squirm beneath Kim's skin as well. Twisting. Writing. But Kim ignores that too.
Blinded by the idea of storybook happiness, Kim barrels headlong into a dream that quickly proves to be anything but and unwittingly seals her family's diabolical fate.

Paying homage to Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby, Ahlborn's Palmetto takes the classic story of wanting it all and asks: how much would you sacrifice to have what you desire? And, watching your dream become a waking nightmare, how loud would you scream?]]>

Horror Movie 206769758 The monster at the heart of a cult 90s cursed horror film tells his shocking and bloody secret history. Slow burn terror meets high-stakes showdowns, from the bestselling author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Cabin at the End of the World.

Summer, 1993 a group of young guerrilla filmmakers spend four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror film. Steeped in mystery and tragedy, the film has taken on a mythic, cult renown, despite only three of the original scenes ever being released to the public.

Decades later, a big budget reboot is in the works, and Hollywood turns to the only surviving cast member the man who played ‘the Thin Kid, the masked teen at the centre of it all. He remembers all too well the secrets buried within the original screenplay, the bizarre events of the filming, and the crossed lines on set.

Caught in a nightmare of masks and appearances, facile Hollywood personalities and the strangeness of fan conventions, the Thin Kid spins a tale of past and present, scripts and reality, and what the camera lets us see. But at what cost do we revisit our demons?

The City & the City 6661027
Borlú must travel from the decaying Beszel to the only metropolis on Earth as strange as his own. This is a border crossing like no other, a journey as psychic as it is physical, a shift in perception, a seeing of the unseen. His destination is Beszel’s equal, rival, and intimate neighbor, the rich and vibrant city of Ul Qoma. With Ul Qoman detective Qussim Dhatt, and struggling with his own transition, Borlú is enmeshed in a sordid underworld of rabid nationalists intent on destroying their neighboring city, and unificationists who dream of dissolving the two into one. As the detectives uncover the dead woman’s secrets, they begin to suspect a truth that could cost them and those they care about more than their lives.

What stands against them are murderous powers in Beszel and in Ul Qoma: and, most terrifying of all, that which lies between these two cities.

Casting shades of Kafka and Philip K. Dick, Raymond Chandler and 1984, The City & the City is a murder mystery taken to dazzling metaphysical and artistic heights.]]>

'The City & The City' is an intoxicating blend of genres that crosses one great divide into another and back again with seamless beauty. An enriching tale that's utterly unique. Accompanied by a like-equivalent from Ul Qoma, and a sidekick in Corwi, the three set out to solve a murder mystery which threatens to disrupt peace in both the cities which occupy the same space.

Ten writers are selected for a summer-long writing retreat with the most celebrated and reclusive author in the world. Their host is the legendary Roderick Wells. Handsome, enigmatic, and fiendishly talented, Wells promises to teach his pupils about writing, about magic, about the untapped potential that each of them possesses. Most of all, he plans to teach them about the darkness in their hearts.

The writers think they are signing up for a chance at riches and literary prestige. But they are really entering the twisted imagination of a deranged genius, a lethal contest pitting them against one another in a struggle for their sanity and their lives. They have entered into Roderick Wells’s most brilliant and horrible creation.

The premise of this horror is a genre staple; a bunch of people of varying socio-economical standing are invited to a house off the grid to participate in a contest which will reward the victor handsomely. If they can survive the secluded retreat that is.

The contest revolves around a writers retreat. 10 fortunate (or unfortunate) aspiring writers have been selected to showcase their talent to a renowned published author. He'll choose the writer whose work impresses him the most and award him/her a publishing deal and a cool 3 million dollars. It's a prize most of the contestants would kill for; however, this being horror and not murder mystery, it's their characters along with some nasty surprises which aim to kill them!

Full of wicked imagery and precision placed scare tactics, The Dark Game doesn't disappoint on the spooky scale.

My rating: 4/5 stars. This was my first book by Jonathan Janz and I have to say, I'm very impressed by what I read, so much so, that I rushed out and bought 3 of his other novels. If horror is your thing, I highly recommend reading The Dark Game.]]>

review:
A number of books have explored the use of writers and their fictional characters coming to life to wreak havoc on their creators, but none have been so diverse and plentiful in number as those which appear in The Dark Game.

If horror is your thing, I highly recommend reading The Dark Game.
