The business triumphs of Bill Gates are widely known: the twenty-year-old who dropped out of Harvard to start a software company that became an industry giant and changed the way the world works and lives; the billionaire many times over who turned his attention to philanthropic pursuits to address climate change, global health, and U.S. education.

Source Code is not about Microsoft or the Gates Foundation or the future of technology. It’s the human, personal story of how Bill Gates became who he is today: his childhood, his early passions and pursuits. It’s the story of his principled grandmother and ambitious parents, his first deep friendships and the sudden death of his best friend; of his struggles to fit in and his discovery of a world of coding and computers in the dawn of a new era; of embarking in his early teens on a path that took him from midnight escapades at a nearby computer center to his college dorm room, where he sparked a revolution that would change the world.

Bill Gates tells this, his own story, for the first time: wise, warm, revealing, it’s a fascinating portrait of an American life.]]>

<![CDATA[Wrong Fit, Right Fit: Why How We Work Matters More Than Ever]]> 128719690 “That thing known as ‘work’―it should work better for everyone. My friend and colleague André Martin tells you how in his just-launched book Wrong Fit, Right Fit. ―Amy Edmondson, author of The Fearless Organization and Right Kind of Wrong
How do we make work feel less like work? What if the issue isn't good or bad culture, but the fit between our ideal way of working day-to-day and that of the companies we join. If we fit, we hum, we connect, we create momentum and do our best work with grace and ease. But wrong fit has serious consequences. It can erode performance, drive up frustration, and steal our competence and confidence.
The good news is, there is a way forward. And it's as simple as crafting the right fit.
Based on his decades of experience and exhaustive research, including in-depth interviews with knowledge workers and leaders from all walks of life, organizational psychologist Dr. Andre Martin guides employees (talent) and organizations to create right fit.
Through compelling exercises, clear insights, and personal stories, Dr. Martin helps talent uncover the kind of place where they can thrive and where work can be, well, less work. And for organizations, Dr. Martin utilizes social science research, innovative practices from progressive companies big and small, and practical day-to-day leadership tips to help them rediscover their secret sauce and create more clarity and opportunity for their talent.
Wrong Fit, Right Fit is for both talent and companies who are looking to build more energy and commitment in the day-to-day. Now is the time to boost engagement, inspiration, well-being, and meaning in the work we do. Now is the time to find a greater return in value for ourselves and our organizations. Now is the time to find right fit.
"If you're a leader who's dedicated to cultivating a thriving workplace with the right fit talent, then this book is a must-read." Sheryl O'Loughlin , former CEO of Clif Bar, REBBL, and co-founder of Plum Organics; Author of Killing An Entrepreneur's Guide to Keeping Your Head Without Losing Your Heart

“In a crowded field of books aimed at the future of work, Wrong Fit, Right Fit provides simple, practical, and sage advice to help companies build better workplaces and people to find a place where they can be at their highest, best use. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to make work, less work. ―Prasad Setty , lecturer at Stanford; Advisor, BetterUp and Grab; Former Google VP, People Operations]]>

Competing Against Luck 28925252
How do companies know how to grow? How can they create products that they are sure customers want to buy? Can innovation be more than a game of hit and miss? Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen has the answer. A generation ago, Christensen revolutionized business with his groundbreaking theory of disruptive innovation. Now, he goes further, offering powerful new insights.

After years of research, Christensen and his co-authors have come to one critical conclusion: our long held maxim--that understanding the customer is the crux of innovation--is wrong. Customers don't buy products or services; they "hire" them to do a job. Understanding customers does not drive innovation success, he argues. Understanding customer jobs does. The "Jobs to Be Done" approach can be seen in some of the world's most respected companies and fast-growing startups, including Amazon, Intuit, Uber, Airbnb, and Chobani yogurt, to name just a few. But this book is not about celebrating these successes--it's about predicting new ones.

Christensen, Hall, Dillon, and Duncan contend that by understanding what causes customers to "hire" a product or service, any business can improve its innovation track record, creating products that customers not only want to hire, but that they'll pay premium prices to bring into their lives. Jobs theory offers new hope for growth to companies frustrated by their hit and miss efforts.

This book carefully lays down the authors' provocative framework, providing a comprehensive explanation of the theory and why it is predictive, how to use it in the real world--and, most importantly, how not to squander the insights it provides.]]>

<![CDATA[Lizard Optimization: Unlock Product Growth By Engaging Long-Tail Users]]> 217330388 Lizard Optimization is a technique for designing product development experiments by engaging long-tail users that seem to follow some unexplainable "lizard" logic. It can help you understand your audience better and improve your products.

The method is based on the author’s experience managing an online software product that grew explosively from November 2021 to November 2022. The key user metric, tracking when people are getting value from the product, increased by more than 500 times in those 12 months (times, not percent). This happened after a period of unremarkable growth and a slow decline. Looking back, the key factor in reversing the decline and unlocking exponential growth was a counter-intuitive approach to engaging users.

This book is a summary of the key lessons from that crazy growth phase, synthesized into a simple process that you can apply to improve your products, and help you unlock growth, reduce churn and increase revenue.

Who should read this book?

This book is primarily for software product managers, product data scientists, senior engineers and anyone else involved in product management and guidance.

If your role involves coming up with new feature ideas, approving or rejecting proposed changes, or supporting people who do, this is a book for you.

How can Lizard Optimization help you?

If your product is still looking for a market, Lizard Optimization can help you find it sooner. For products that need to grow their user base, this technique can help you reduce churn and keep customers engaged for longer. For more mature products, Lizard Optimization could uncover new feature ideas, engage overlooked categories of users, and help you address larger markets. It can also reveal interesting ideas for increasing customer lifetime value.

<![CDATA[Learning to Scale: The Secret to Growing a Fast and Resilient Company]]> 53614786
As your startup grows past a few dozen employees, the “big company disease starts creeping in. Customers complain about quality issues, everything feels slower than before, employees are less engaged and departments start to fight over resources. And when the business environment starts shifting, you find it increasingly difficult to keep everybody working in concert to adapt to the new situation. How can you keep growing while preserving the energy of the early days? This book presents a proven model, first developed by Toyota and then used by giants such as Amazon or Pixar. This model has brought impressive results across industries, from manufacturing to healthcare, from IT to operations, all over the globe. It also inspired Agile methodologies and the Lean Startup but however successful these approaches, they only scratched the surface of what was possible.

Régis Medina has spent the last 10 years adapting this model to the specific world of startups and scale-ups, working with more than a hundred teams and dozens of executives, and covering the main activities of a operations, customer support, product development, sales, marketing, human resources, finance, etc. For the first time, he presents the whole approach in a compact and actionable format, designed for modern companies.

This book covers many of the questions that every CEO or manager

How do we improve performance for customers without putting too much pressure on the teams? How do we industrialize operations in a way that does not inhibit creativity? How do we adapt to changing business conditions and keep relevant and profitable over time?- How do we attract and retain talent? How do we best combine automation and human work? How do we improve teamwork across teams and departments? etc. What makes this approach revolutionary is that, contrary to most management theories, it is not a blueprint for organizing work or optimizing processes. It is a complete enterprise model built on how people learn and grow everyday at work. It is based on a simple but powerful when people better understand what they do and why, they’re better at everything they touch and the company moves faster.

This book is for CEOs, C-level executives, managers and team leaders who want to build a word-class organization.

Reviews"A powerful mental model that helps me find improvement ideas on the field that I could not see before. It also provides an important cultural element to keep everyone aligned and engaged in a fast-growing company." Steve Anavi, co-founder & CEO @ Qonto

“The practices described in this book are part of the DNA of Theodo and have helped us grow tenfold over a four-year period, while remaining a “best place to work for our employees." Benoît Charles-Lavauzelle, co-founder @ Theodo

“After 8 years of steady growth, it was becoming hard to live up to our high quality standards, and problems kept emerging everywhere. The practices described in this book have helped me transform the company into a faster, customer-obsessed and learning organization.â€â€ Jonathan Vidor, founder & CEO @ JVWEB]]>

But honest and open conversations are not taking place between management and Agile delivery teams. <![CDATA[Revolution in The Valley: The Insanely Great Story of How the Mac Was Made]]> 40492
The stories in Revolution in the Valley come on extremely good authority. That's because author Andy Hertzfeld was a core member of the team that built the Macintosh system software, and a key creator of the Mac's radically new user interface software. One of the chosen few who worked with the mercurial Steve Jobs, you might call him the ultimate insider.

When Revolution in the Valley begins, Hertzfeld is working on Apple's first attempt at a low-cost, consumer-oriented computer: the Apple II. He sees that Steve Jobs is luring some of the company's most brilliant innovators to work on a tiny research effort the Macintosh. Hertzfeld manages to make his way onto the Macintosh research team, and the rest is history.

Through lavish illustrations, period photos, and Hertzfeld's vivid first-hand accounts, Revolution in the Valley reveals what it was like to be there at the birth of the personal computer revolution. Here is the 4th edition of the french reference on Scrum. It's a solid refactoring on the form, not so much in the idea. Even if some evolution are found (and meaningful resuffle also), I worry a lot about ideas becoming old. First a strong focus on "features", a chunk larger than user story, and releases, a 2/3 months timeframe. Today we're going toward thiner timeframes : reviewed, quality proof commits, very frequent or continuous delivery. A school of thoughts where pieces larger than the one handled in classic Scrum are more important seems outdated. It's time to change gear.

<![CDATA[Scrum - Pour une pratique vivante de l'agilité]]> 42198270 384 Claude Aubry 2100779230 Christophe 3 agile This is an excellent book on Scrum. At least it used to be. This is also a text very well written and this has not changed. But since the 1st edition of the book, the world has changed and so did the practices. Now devops, continuous deployment and craftsmanship shift practices toward small chunks and trunk-based development. Tools such as GitHub and Gitlab-like packagings make easy merge / pull request with hight quality. The author still ignore those trends and seems to be stuck to the story level. Even worse, he is leaning toward bigger chunks such as features instead of stories and releases instead of sprints. In today's worls, it doesn't looks up to date anymore, just old fashion agility.
This is a high quality text, well written. I whished the content would go in a more modern therefore agile direction.

Claude Aubry's book is still the book in french about Scrum. This 3rd update doesn't change the whole content, but is still valuable. It reflects the author's change of mind about some practices. Slowly it moves from beginner to more mature practitioners, even if it's not the intent of the author.

<![CDATA[Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making]]> 59696349
Each quick 5-20 page entry builds on the previous one, charting Tony’s personal journey from a product designer to a leader, from a startup founder to an executive to a mentor. Tony uses examples that are instantly captivating, like the process of building the very first iPod and iPhone. Every chapter is designed to help readers with a problem they’re facing right now—how to get funding for their startup, whether to quit their job or not, or just how to deal with the jerk in the next cubicle.

Tony forged his path to success alongside mentors like Steve Jobs and Bill Campbell, icons of Silicon Valley who succeeded time and time again. But Tony doesn’t follow the Silicon Valley credo that you have to reinvent everything from scratch to make something great. His advice is unorthodox because it’s old school. Because Tony’s learned that human nature doesn’t change. You don’t have to reinvent how you lead and manage—just what you make.]]>

Elon Musk 122765395 From the author of Steve Jobs and other bestselling biographies, this is the astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our era—a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and took over Twitter.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

His father’s impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child, prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive.

At the beginning of 2022—after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth—Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. “I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life, he said.

It was a wistful comment, not a New Year’s resolution. Even as he said it, he was secretly buying up shares of Twitter, the world’s ultimate playground. Over the years, whenever he was in a dark place, his mind went back to being bullied on the playground. Now he had the chance to own the playground.

For two years, Isaacson shadowed Musk, attended his meetings, walked his factories with him, and spent hours interviewing him, his family, friends, coworkers, and adversaries. The result is the revealing inside story, filled with amazing tales of triumphs and turmoil, that addresses the are the demons that drive Musk also what it takes to drive innovation and progress?]]>

Badass: Making Users Awesome 24737268
This is not a game of chance. It is a game of skill and strategy.

And it begins with a single question: given competing products of equal pricing, promotion, and perceived quality, why does one outsell the others?

The answer doesn’t live in the sustainably successful products or services. The answer lives in those who use them.

Our goal is to craft a strategy for creating successful users. And that strategy is full of surprising, counter-intuitive, and astonishingly simple techniques that don’t depend on a massive marketing or development budget. Techniques typically overlooked by even the most well-funded, well-staffed product teams.

Every role is a key player in this game. Product development, engineering, marketing, user experience, support—everyone on the team. Even if that team is a start-up of one. Armed with a surprisingly overlooked science and a unique POV, we can can reduce the role of luck. We can build sustainably successful products and services that rely not on unethical persuasive marketing tricks but on helping our users have deeper, richer experiences. Not just in the moments while they’re using our product but, more importantly, in the moments when they aren’t.]]>

Java Swing 792840 All these new features mean that there's a lot to learn. Swing is undoubtedly way ahead of AWT -- or, for that matter, any widely available user interface toolkit -- but it's also a lot more complicated. It's still easy to do simple things. But once you've seen what's possible, you won't want to do the simple things.
Java Swing gives you in-depth coverage of everything you need to know to take full advantage of Swing, providing detailed descriptions of every class and interface in the key Swing packages. It shows you how to use all of the new components, allowing you to build state-of-the-art user interfaces. It also discusses how the components implement the MVC (Model View Controller) architecture, so you can understand how the components are designed and subclass them intelligently. Finally, it shows how to create your own "look and feel." Throughout, Java Swing focuses on giving you the context you need to understand what you're doing. It's more than documentation; Java Swing helps you develop code quickly and effectively.

<![CDATA[Cynefin - Weaving Sense-Making into the Fabric of Our World ED02]]> 72291283
The first edition of this book was published in 2020, a year when a tiny microbe took the world hostage. It was a year of change, tragedy, and coming to terms with uncertainty. It was a time when humanity longed for some kind of normalcy and slowly realized that the uncertainty was, in fact, normal. Now, two years later, it is still unclear if it is appropriate to refer to our times as post-pandemic, or if there is yet more to come. What is clear, however, is that COVID-19 is not the last so-called wicked problem that humanity will face. Yes, even in the time it took to create this second edition, we find ourselves in the midst of a war, looming economic recession, food shortages, and this in the context of other existential threats already on the horizon, if not at the door. What is deeply disturbing is that humanity seems to be more divided than ever. Societal fracture lines are deepening, and a deep distrust in science, expertise, and formal authority, along with phenomena like fake news and conspiracy theories, are exacerbating these tensions. What is becoming ever clearer is that the world needs sensemaking skills, and we hope this book will contribute to that need with practical wisdom.

As you will see in this book, Cynefin is a meta-framework that can be applied in almost any context. Over time, it has been associated with the field of complexity. However, it is more closely related to the field of sense-making, particularly the naturalization of sense-making. As a Framework for sense-making, it helps us untangle our intractable problems in an actionable way.

At its most basic, the Cynefin Framework allows us to distinguish between three different kinds of systems: Cynefin acknowledges that these different systemic contexts exist in parallel, avoiding creating false dichotomies and polarization.

Retrospectives Antipatterns 53435219 Improve Every Retrospective! Real Solutions for Every Team Leader, Facilitator, and Participant
". . . Aino has shared a robust, curated list of antipatterns and how to avoid them. . . . And she has shared so much more than tips and techniques. You will find a gold mine--with precious nuggets, including her personal experiences, effective facilitation resources, and pointers for extracting yourself and your team when you're stuck."
--From the Foreword by Diana Larsen, co-author, Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great
Retrospectives are indispensable for continuous learning and improvement in Lean, Agile, DevOps, and other contexts, but most of us have suffered through at least one retrospective that was a waste of time, or worse. Now, leading agile coach Aino Vonge Corry identifies 24 reasons that retrospectives fail and shows how to overcome each of them.

Using the familiar "patterns" approach, Retrospectives Antipatterns introduces antipatterns related to structure, planning, people, distributed teams, and more. Corry shares traps she's encountered and mistakes she's made over more than a decade of leading retrospectives and then presents proven solutions. With her insights and guidance, you can run enjoyable retrospectives that deliver concrete improvements and real value--or at the very least recognize when you are making the same mistake as the author!
Create a common language, actionable solutions, and proven plans for solving the retrospective problems you'll encounter most often Recognize symptoms, assess tradeoffs, and refactor your current situation into something better Plan more effectively: decide who should attend and facilitate, when to schedule your retrospective, and how much time to set aside Handle "people" problems: deal with negativity, silence, distrust, disillusionment, loudmouths, and cultural differences Facilitate better "virtual" retrospectives, with tips for online retrospectives included in each antipattern Register your book for convenient access to downloads, updates, and/or corrections as they become available. <![CDATA[Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon]]> 53138083 Working Backwards is an insider's breakdown of Amazon's approach to culture, leadership, and best practices from two long-time, top-level Amazon executives.

Colin started at Amazon in 1998; Bill joined in 1999. In Working Backwards, these two long-serving Amazon executives reveal and codify the principles and practices that drive the success of one of the most extraordinary companies the world has ever known. With twenty-seven years of Amazon experience between them, much of it in the early aughts—a period of unmatched innovation that brought products and services including Kindle, Amazon Prime, Amazon Studios, and Amazon Web Services to life—Bryar and Carr offer unprecedented access to the Amazon way as it was refined, articulated, and proven to be repeatable, scalable, and adaptable.

With keen analysis and practical steps for applying it at your own company—no matter the size—the authors illuminate how Amazon’s fourteen leadership principles inform decision-making at all levels and reveal how the company’s culture has been defined by four characteristics: customer obsession, long-term thinking, eagerness to invent, and operational excellence. Bryar and Carr explain the set of ground-level practices that ensure these are translated into action and flow through all aspects of the business.

Working Backwards is a practical guidebook and a corporate narrative, filled with the authors in-the-room recollections of what “Being Amazonian is like and how it has affected their personal and professional lives. They demonstrate that success on Amazon’s scale is not achieved by the genius of any single leader, but rather through commitment to and execution of a set of well-defined, rigorously-executed principles and practices—shared here for the very first time.

<![CDATA[Radical Product Thinking: The New Mindset for Innovating Smarter]]> 56705493
In the last decade, we’ve learned to harness the power of iteration to innovate faster—we’ve invested in a fast car, but our ability to set a clear destination and navigate to it hasn't kept up.

When we iterate without a clear vision or strategy, our products become bloated, fragmented, and driven by irrelevant metrics. They catch “product diseases that often kill innovation.

Radical Product Thinking (RPT) gives organizations a repeatable model for building world-changing products. The key? Being vision-driven instead of iteration-led. R. Dutt guides readers through the five elements of the methodology (vision, strategy, prioritization, execution and measurement, and culture) to develop a clear process for translating vision into reality, and turning RPT skills into muscle memory.

This book offers refreshing solutions to the shortcomings of our current model for product development; be prepared to toss out everything you know about a good vision and learn how to measure progress to create revolutionary products. The best part? You don’t have to be a natural-born visionary to produce extraordinary results.]]>

Ross , Principal, Business Rule Solutions, LLC, Executive Editor, “Gottesdiener’s years of software development experience coupled with her straight-forward writing style make her book a perfect choice for either a senior developer or a midlevel project manager. In addition to her technical experience, her knowledge of group dynamics balance the book by educating the reader on how to manage conflict and personality differences within a requirements team–something that is missing from most requirements textbooks...It is a required ‘handbook that will be referred to again and again. Kay Christian , ebusiness Consultant, Conifer, Colorado Requirements by Collaboration is a ‘must read for any system stakeholder. End users and system analysts will learn the significant value they can add to the systems development process. Management will learn the tremendous return they may receive from making a modest time/people investment in facilitated sessions. Facilitators will discover ways to glean an amazing amount of high-quality information in a relatively brief time. Russ Schwartz , Computer System Quality Consultant, Global Biotechnology Firm “In addition to showing how requirements are identified, evaluated, and confirmed, Ellen provides important guidance based on her own real-world experience for creating and managing the workshop environment in which requirements are generated. This book is an engaging and invaluable resource for project teams and sponsors, both business and IT, who are committed to achieving results in the most productive manner possible. Hal Thilmony , Senior Manager, Business Process Improvement (Finance), CiscoSystems, Inc. “Project managers should read this book for assistance with planning the requirements process. Experienced facilitators will enrich their knowledge. New facilitators can use this book to get them up to speed and become more effective in less time. Rob Stroober , Competence Development Manager and Project Manager, Deloitte &Touche Consultdata, The Netherlands “While many books discuss the details of software requirement artifacts (for example, use cases), Ellen’s new book zeros in on effective workshop techniques and tools used to gather the content of these artifacts. As a pioneer in requirements workshops, she shares her real-life experiences in a comprehensive and easy-to-read book with many helpful examples and diagrams. Bill Bird , Aera Energy LLC Requirements by Collaboration is absolutely full of guidance on the most effective ways to use workshops in requirements capture. <![CDATA[Becoming Agile: ...in an imperfect world]]> 1883101 Becoming Agile takes a different approach and focuses on explaining Agile from a case-study perspective. Agile principles are discussed, explained, and then demonstrated in the context of a case study that flows throughout the book. The case study is based on a mixture of the author's real-world experiences.

Becoming Agile also focuses on the importance of adapting Agile principles to the realities of your environment. In the early days of Agile, there was a general belief that Agile had to be used in all phases of a project, and that it had to be used in its purest form. Over the last few years, reputable Agile authorities have begun questioning this belief: We're finding that the best deployments of Agile are customized to the realities of a given company.

Becoming Agile discusses the cultural realities of deploying Agile and how to deal with the needs of executives, managers, and the development team during migration. The author discusses employee motivation and establishing incentives that reward support of Agile techniques.

Purchase of the print book comes with an offer of a free PDF, ePub, and Kindle eBook from Manning. Also available is all code from the book.

Praise for Becoming Agile...

"This is much more than just a book about Agile. This is a roadmap. A very detailed roadmap that takes you from the initial "is Agile right for me?" stage through completion and delivery of your pilot project and beyond."

-Charlie Griefer, Senior Software Engineer, Amcom Technology

"...a must read for those of us who have come from years of waterfall and attempts at changes to "traditional" methodologies or processes... clear, concise and has plenty of example scenarios that many individuals and corporations would identify with."

-Jamie Phillips, Senior Software Engineer, Picis Inc

"This book is quite unique. It is written in a form of a 5-day training course. I am usually not a fan of such a writing style, but I think that Becoming Agile is an exception. It's about a software process and as such requires a lot of case studies, group exercises (or at least what a book format allows), and therefore the training course style is perfect to facilitate learning."

-Vladimir Pasman, Cocoacast.com

"Becoming Agile in an Imperfect World offers a different and useful look at Agile methods. Reminding us that becoming agile is more of a mindset adjustment than a process change, Sidky and Smith use a case study to share their insights and tools throughout the book, including the unique Sidky Agile Measurement Index (SAMI)."

-Sanjiv Augustine, President, LitheSpeed LLC and author of Managing Agile Projects

"The authors emphasise that the aim should be to create a customised agile development process that is tailored to the needs of the organisation...Instead of aiming for "agile perfection", one should aim at reaching the right level of agility for one's organisation. Excellent advice!"

-Kailash Awati, Eight to Late

"The book totally inspired me. A lot of my readings on Agile from back in the day were very theoretical and high level at the same time. But Becoming Agile helps take you to the next level by going beyond the theory and into the nitty gritty practicality of employing the Agile approach. So it was very energizing having the game plan laid out in front of you, as well as the hurdles you'll encounter and how to overcome them."

<![CDATA[Agile Software Development: The Cooperative Game]]> 942575 -Tom Gilb The agile model of software development has taken the world by storm. Now, in Agile Software Development, Second Edition, one of agile's leading pioneers updates his Jolt Productivity award-winning book to reflect all that's been learned about agile development since its original introduction. Alistair Cockburn begins by updating his powerful model of software development as a "cooperative game of invention and communication." Among the new ideas he introduces: harnessing competition without damaging collaboration; learning lessons from lean manufacturing; and balancing strategies for communication. Cockburn also explains how the cooperative game is played in business and on engineering projects, not just software development Next, he systematically illuminates the agile model, shows how it has evolved, and answers the questions developers and project managers ask most often, including - Where does agile development fit in our organization? - How do we blend agile ideas with other ideas? - How do we extend agile ideas more broadly? Cockburn takes on crucial misconceptions that cause agile projects to fail. For example, you'll learn why encoding project management strategies into fixed processes can lead to ineffective strategy decisions and costly mistakes. You'll also find a thoughtful discussion of the controversial relationship between agile methods and user experience design. Cockburn turns to the practical challenges of constructing agile methodologies for your own teams. You'll learn how to tune and continuously reinvent your methodologies, and how to manage incomplete communication. This edition contains important new contributions on these and other topics: - Agile and CMMI - Introducing agile from the top down - Revisiting "custom contracts" - Creating change with "stickers" In addition, Cockburn updates his discussion of the Crystal methodologies, which utilize his "cooperative game" as their central metaphor. If you're new to agile development, this book will help you succeed the first time out. If you've used agile methods before, Cockburn's techniques will make you even more effective.]]> 504 Alistair Cockburn 0321482751 Christophe 3 4.01 2006 Agile Software Development: The Cooperative Game

<![CDATA[A Radical Enterprise: Pioneering the Future of High-Performing Organizations]]> 59207618
The tomato sauce in your pantry. The raincoat in your closet. The smart TV hanging in your living room. What do all of these products have in common? Chances are they were created by organizations where colleagues self-allocate into teams based on intrinsic motivation. Where individuals self-manage their commitments to each other without the coercion of managers. And where teams launch new products and ventures on the market without the control of leaders.

These organizations represent a new, radically collaborative breed of corporation. Recently doubling in number and already comprising 8% of corporations around the world, scientists and researchers have discovered that radically collaborative organizations are more competitive on practically every meaningful financial measure. They enjoy higher market share, higher innovation, and higher customer satisfaction than their traditional corporate competitors—and they also enjoy higher engagement, loyalty, and motivation from their employees.

In this groundbreaking book, technology thought leader and organizational architect Matt K. Parker breaks down the counterintuitive principles and practices that radically collaborative organizations thrive on. By combining the latest insights from organizational science, sociology, and psychology, he illuminates four imperatives that all radically collaborative organizations must embrace in order to team autonomy, managerial devolution, deficiency gratification, and candid vulnerability.

Millions of workers around the world are collapsing under the weight of command-and-control culture. The crisis has reached its breaking point. Now is the time to embrace radical change. Discover the revolutionary shift to partnership and equality and the economic superiority that follows with A Radical Enterprise.]]>

<![CDATA[Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say -- and What You Don't]]> 42774083 Amazon "Best Business and Leadership" books of 2020

Few of us realize that our language in the workplace inhibits creative problem-solving and escalates uncertainty and stress. In both high-pressure situations and everyday scenarios, in each meeting and email, we have the opportunity to empower our colleagues by using the right words.

In Leadership is Language, Former US navy captain David Marquet expands on his bestselling leadership book Turn the Ship Around! and shows managers and leaders the next step in their development: how to enable their team through communication.

Marquet outlines a set of principles and tools that help leaders inspire their people to take responsibility and address challenges without waiting to be told what to do, highlighting how small changes in language can lead to dramatic changes in a team's success and happiness.

Praise for Turn the Ship Around!:

'I don't know of a finer model of this kind of empowering leadership than Captain Marquet. And in the pages that follow you will find a model for your pathway' Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

'To say I'm a fan of David Marquet would be an understatement... I'm a fully fledged groupie. He is the kind of leader who comes around only once a generation. He is the kind of leader who doesn't just know how to lead, he knows how to build leaders. His ideas and lessons are invaluable to anyone who wants to build an organization that will outlive them' Simon Sinek, optimist and author of Start with Why]]>

Thinking, Fast and Slow 13539043 New York Times bestseller

Selected by the New York Times Book Review as one of the best books of 2011
A Globe and Mail Best Books of the Year 2011 Title
One of The Economist's 2011 Books of the Year
One of The Wall Street Journal's Best Nonfiction Books of the Year 2011

In the international bestseller, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman, the renowned psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation—each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions.
Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives—and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Winner of the National Academy of Sciences Best Book Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the ten best books of 2011, Thinking, Fast and Slow is destined to be a classic.]]>

<![CDATA[Radical Focus: Achieving Your Most Important Goals with Objectives and Key Results (Empowered Teams)]]> 57867597 The award-winning author of The Team That Managed Itself and Pencil Me In returns with a new and expanded edition of her landmark book on OKRs.

If you've ever wanted to know how to use OKRs, or why yours might not be working, Radical Focus teaches you everything you need to achieve your goals. The author pulls from her experience with Silicon Valley's hottest companies to teach practical insights on OKRs in the form of a fable. When Hanna and Jack receive an ultimatum from the only investor in their struggling tea supply company, they must learn how to employ Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) with radical focus to get the right things done. Using Hanna and Jack's story, Wodtke walks readers through how to inspire a diverse team to work together in pursuit of a single, challenging goal, and how to stay motivated despite setbacks and failures. Radical Focus has been translated into six languages and sold more than 50,000 copies. Now, the second edition of her OKR manifesto proves that Wodtke's business strategies are essential in a world where focus seems to be a more and more unreachable goal. The updated version includes 22,000 words of all-new material designed to help OKR users in larger companies create, grade, and manage OKRs in ways that accelerate success and drive rapid organizational learning. Ready to move your team in the right direction? Read this book together, and learn Wodtke's powerful system for attaining your most important goals with radical focus.]]>

--------

The revolutionary movement behind the explosive growth of Intel, Google, Amazon and Uber.
With a foreword by Larry Page, and contributions from Bono and Bill Gates.

Measure What Matters is about using Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), a revolutionary approach to goal-setting, to make tough choices in business.

In 1999, legendary venture capitalist John Doerr invested nearly $12 million in a startup that had amazing technology, entrepreneurial energy and sky-high ambitions, but no real business plan. Doerr introduced the founders to OKRs and with them at the foundation of their management, the startup grew from forty employees to more than 70,000 with a market cap exceeding $600 billion. The startup was Google.

Since then Doerr has introduced OKRs to more than fifty companies, helping tech giants and charities exceed all expectations. In the OKR model objectives define what we seek to achieve and key results are how those top priority goals will be attained. OKRs focus effort, foster coordination and enhance workplace satisfaction. They surface an organization's most important work as everyone's goals from entry-level to CEO are transparent to the entire institution.

In Measure What Matters, Doerr shares a broad range of first-person, behind-the-scenes case studies, with narrators including Bono and Bill Gates, to demonstrate the focus, agility, and explosive growth that OKRs have spurred at so many great organizations.

This book will show you how to collect timely, relevant data to track progress - to measure what matters. It will help any organization or team aim high, move fast, and excel.

[Vernon and Jaskula] provide insights, tools, proven best practices, and architecture styles both from the business and engineering viewpoint. . . . This book deserves to become a must-read for practicing software engineers, executives as well as senior managers.
--Michael Stal, Certified Senior Software Architect, Siemens Technology
Strategic Monoliths and Microservices helps business decision-makers and technical team members clearly understand their strategic problems through collaboration and identify optimal architectural approaches, whether the approach is distributed microservices, well-modularized monoliths, or coarser-grained services partway between the two.

Leading software architecture experts Vaughn Vernon and Tomasz Jaskula show how to make balanced architectural decisions based on need and purpose, rather than hype, so you can promote value and innovation, deliver more evolvable systems, and avoid costly mistakes. Using realistic examples, they show how to construct well-designed monoliths that are maintainable and extensible, and how to gradually redesign and reimplement even the most tangled legacy systems into truly effective microservices.
