Es en la filosofía presocrática en donde revive, transfigurada, toda la esencia del universo griego: la pluralidad de los dioses olímpicos, que de algún modo traducía ya plásticamente las cualidades metafísicas del mundo, es profundizada y puesta al desnudo como una multiplicidad palpitante de esencias escondidas e individuadas, que llegan a ser concebidas en el marco de sistemas conceptuales completos y armónicos, a partir de los cuales es posible tener un acercamiento, nunca definitivo, a lo «irrepresentable», aquello de lo cual el mundo es expresión.

Es por ello que Colli se enfoca en obtener, a partir de un método histórico-filológico «que clarifique las “expresiones lejanas� y las ponga a nuestro alcance», una interpretación lo más pura posible del pensamiento de estos primeros filósofos, que nos permita deshacernos «de casi toda la crítica moderna que interpreta a los presocráticos según lo que cree entender Aristóteles». De ahí que dedique tres lecciones a tratar precisamente el problema de la transmisión aristotélica de la sabiduría arcaica, para después darnos un retrato de los tres grandes representantes de ésta: Parménides, Heráclito y Empédocles, y por último pasar, en tres tiempos, por el pensamiento de Platón, «crepúsculo espléndido» de esta incesante búsqueda de la verdad.

El resultado es, como bien señala Miguel Morey —traductor y prologuista de este libro�, un desafío al lector, a los límites de su pensamiento, invitándolo a ir más allá. «No son pocos los buenos lectores de Colli que afirman que éste es su libro más perfecto»; «después de haberlo leído, no es posible volver sobre los temas que aquí se tratan de la misma manera que antes [...] Hacer que esto sea posible es sin duda el mejor regalo que al día de hoy puede hacer un sabio».

Giorgio Colli (1917-1979) enseñó filosofía antigua en la Universidad de Pisa y dirigió, junto con Mazzino Montinari, la edición definitiva de las Obras completas de Friedrich Nietzsche, que se publicaron simultáneamente en Italia, Francia y Alemania. Otro de sus proyectos importantes, aunque inconcluso, fue La sabiduría griega, edición y traducción de los fragmentos de los filósofos presocráticos, que se vio interrumpida por su muerte.
