Never-before-seen photographs and unheard stories bring the history of this special force to life in vivid colour and astonishing detail.

Created during the Second World War, the SAS was a small band of men brought together in the North African desert. They were the toughest and brightest of their cohort, the most resilient, most capable in close combat and most careful in surveillance. Winning approval for this radical new form of warfare was no small feat, but eventually it was achieved. The SAS was born, their mission to take on small-scale but often devastating raids and risks behind enemy lines.

Levine tours us through the wartime experience, taking us behind the scenes through exclusive access to SAS archives. Drawing on individual stories and personal testimony, including interviews with veterans and family members of the original troupe, Levine creates a striking sense of what it was like to fight and train in the SAS during the Second World War. This illustrated history tells the origin story of this enigmatic unit by bringing to light photographs and stories long thought lost to history.]]>

What struck me most was that the main leaders weren't typical military types. They were creatives - a poet and a fairly talented artist. These tough men who built one of the world's most elite forces had this artistic side to them.

The book shows how the SAS changed over time, becoming very different from what it started as. By the end of the war, many of the men couldn't adjust to civilian life. Paddy Mayne, one of the key figures, died young in a drunk driving accident. Others just never found their place after the war. But Mike Sadler lived a long, fulfilling life and kept having adventures right till the end.

I'm not exactly sure what I learned from this story, but that's maybe what makes it interesting. It's not a book with simple lessons - it's more about how complex people can be and how war changes them in different ways. Worth reading if you're interested in military history or just how organizations evolve.]]>

Just finished "SAS" by Joshua Levine after watching the show SAS Rogue Heroes. The book dives into how this legendary unit got started pretty much by accident - as a deception that actually worked and then became real.

鈽呪槄鈽呪槄鈽

Svoboda's second Aghora book delivers the perfect blend of mysticism and narrative that made the first installment so captivating. Through the continuing story of Vimalananda, complex Kundalini concepts unfold in accessible, memorable ways that textbooks simply cannot achieve.

What makes this book special is how it doesn't shy away from acknowledging the subjective nature of spiritual experiences. While some might find this transparency jarring, I appreciated the authenticity. The fantastical elements leave you wondering where objective reality ends and personal interpretation begins鈥攁nd whether that distinction even matters on a spiritual journey.

Like its predecessor, this book presents profound ideas through engaging storytelling, ensuring the concepts stay with you long after the final page. The spiritual principles are delivered with such nonchalance that paradoxically adds to their impact rather than diminishing it.

A thought-provoking read that bridges the gap between ancient Tantric wisdom and modern spiritual seeking. Can't wait to dive into the third book!]]>

Robert E. Svoboda's "Aghora: At the Left Hand of God" is a captivating journey into the mystical world of Tantric practices through the eyes of the author's guru, Vimalananda. What makes this account particularly fascinating is how it presents an unconventional aghori - one who maintained family life, descended from royalty, and owned property, defying the typical image of renunciate practitioners.

The book effortlessly weaves between fantastical experiences and symbolic interpretations, from shava sadhana (corpse meditation) to encounters with dakinis (tantric goddesses). While some passages stretch credibility, the narrative remains consistently engaging - compelling enough to consume all 300 pages within two days across home, flights, and hotel rooms.

Svoboda's writing could be compared to a spiritual counterpart of Kenneth Anderson's wildlife accounts of India, except Svoboda delves deeper into the otherworldly and esoteric dimensions of the subcontinent's mystical traditions.

One of the most profound teachings that resonates throughout is the practice of simultaneously seeing everyone as both Shiva (divine consciousness) and as a skeleton (impermanent form) - a powerful contemplation that cuts through illusion while acknowledging our divine nature.

Though occasionally difficult to believe, the book's blend of the extraordinary and the symbolic creates an intriguing portrait of tantric practices that keeps readers turning pages well into the night.]]>

<![CDATA[The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains]]> 9778945 Atlantic Monthly cover story, he tapped into a well of anxiety about how the Internet is changing us. He also crystallized one of the most important debates of our time: As we enjoy the Net鈥檚 bounties, are we sacrificing our ability to read and think deeply?

Now, Carr expands his argument into the most compelling exploration of the Internet鈥檚 intellectual and cultural consequences yet published. As he describes how human thought has been shaped through the centuries by 鈥渢ools of the mind鈥濃攆rom the alphabet to maps, to the printing press, the clock, and the computer鈥擟arr interweaves a fascinating account of recent discoveries in neuroscience by such pioneers as Michael Merzenich and Eric Kandel. Our brains, the historical and scientific evidence reveals, change in response to our experiences. The technologies we use to find, store, and share information can literally reroute our neural pathways.

Building on the insights of thinkers from Plato to McLuhan, Carr makes a convincing case that every information technology carries an intellectual ethic鈥攁 set of assumptions about the nature of knowledge and intelligence. He explains how the printed book served to focus our attention, promoting deep and creative thought. In stark contrast, the Internet encourages the rapid, distracted sampling of small bits of information from many sources. Its ethic is that of the industrialist, an ethic of speed and efficiency, of optimized production and consumption鈥攁nd now the Net is remaking us in its own image. We are becoming ever more adept at scanning and skimming, but what we are losing is our capacity for concentration, contemplation, and reflection.

Part intellectual history, part popular science, and part cultural criticism, The Shallows sparkles with memorable vignettes鈥擣riedrich Nietzsche wrestling with a typewriter, Sigmund Freud dissecting the brains of sea creatures, Nathaniel Hawthorne contemplating the thunderous approach of a steam locomotive鈥攅ven as it plumbs profound questions about the state of our modern psyche. In our search for truth, how far have we advanced? This uniquely human quest for good explanations has driven amazing improvements in everything from scientific understanding and technology to politics, moral values and human welfare. But will progress end, either in catastrophe or completion - or will it continue infinitely?

In this profound and seminal book, David Deutsch explores the furthest reaches of our current understanding, taking in the Infinity Hotel, supernovae and the nature of optimism, to instill in all of us a wonder at what we have achieved - and the fact that this is only the beginning of humanity's infinite possibility.

'This is Deutsch at his most ambitious, seeking to understand the implications of our scientific explanations of the world ... <![CDATA[Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI]]> 195887568 A rich, narrative explanation of the mathematics that has brought us machine learning and the ongoing explosion of artificial intelligence

Machine learning systems are making life-altering decisions for approving mortgage loans, determining whether a tumour is cancerous, or deciding whether someone gets bail. They now influence developments and discoveries in chemistry, biology, and physics鈥攖he study of genomes, extra-solar planets, even the intricacies of quantum systems.听And all this before large language models such as ChatGPT came on the scene.

We are living through a revolution in machine learning-powered AI that shows no signs of slowing down. This technology is based on relatively simple mathematical ideas, some of which go back centuries, including linear algebra and calculus, the stuff of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century mathematics. It took the birth and advancement of computer science and the kindling of 1990s computer chips designed for video games to ignite the explosion of AI that we see today. In this enlightening book, Anil Ananthaswamy explains the fundamental math behind machine learning, while suggesting intriguing links between artifical and natural intelligence. Might the same math underpin them both?

As Ananthaswamy resonantly concludes, to make safe and effective use of artificial intelligence, we need to understand its profound capabilities and limitations, the clues to which lie in the math that makes machine learning possible.]]>

<![CDATA[Following Fish: Travels around the Indian Coast]]> 8407189
In nine essays, Following Fish conducts rich journalistic investigations: among others, of the famed fish treatment for asthmatics in Hyderabad; of the preparation and the process of eating West Bengal's prized hilsa; of the ancient art of building fishing boats in Gujarat; of the fiery cuisine and the singular spirit of Kerala's toddy shops; of the food and the lives of Mumbai's first peoples; of the history of an old Catholic fishing community in Tamil Nadu; of the hunt for the world's fastest fish near Goa.

Throughout his travels, Subramanian observes the cosmopolitanism and diverse influences absorbed by India's coastal cities, the wthdrawing of traditional fishermen from their craft, the corresponding growth of fishing as pure and voluminous commerce, and the degradation of waters and beaches from over-fishing.

Pulsating with pleasure, adventure and discovery, and tempered by nostalgia and loss, Following Fish speaks as eloquently to the armchair traveller as to lovers of the sea and its lore.]]>

What Got You Here Won't Get You There in Sales! provides simple-to-use tools for maintaining and leveraging quality personal connections by doing something much easier than learning new behaviors: simply stopping old ones. When dealing with your customers, do you:

Needlessly verbalize and execute every possible step in the sales process? Repeatedly initiate communication for no apparent purpose? Attempt to verbally "one up" your customer in conversation? The authors name 16 bad habits in all, and they provide proven techniques for reversing their negative effects by putting them to rest for good. There is no profession that depends more on good relationships than sales. And there's no one more qualified to coach you to create and nurture productive sales relationships than these three authors.

You do have the power to change. Let Goldsmith, Brown, and Hawkins help you kick your bad habits to improve relationships, increase sales, and enjoy a more fulfilling, enriching career.]]>

<![CDATA[WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA: A Story of Gangland Democracy]]> 13078721 WE THE PEOPLE OF INDIA: A Story of Gangland Democracy

Ebook published by IDEAINDIA.COM

Copyright Maloy Krishna Dhar 2008

A Gandhi is killed, a Bose is forgotten and a Bhagat Singh no more pricks the conscience of the people who lead the country. This is the story of a nation that boasts of being the largest democracy. The novel undertakes tortuous journeys through the political minefield and discovers that moneybags muscle power and criminal fringes have hijacked Indian democracy.

Satya Sarthi is a psephologicst and wants to bring about a change in the system. He tries to catapult his simple but sharp businessman friend Dharmi into the top corridors of politics. His aim is to dethrone the ruling family which is corrupt and manipulative.

Dharmi鈥檚 hesitant metamorphosis from a businessman into a na茂ve politician and finally into a pucca politician is full of pathos. Does he succeed in dethroning the family? Does he end up changing the system? Maloy Krishna Dhar captures the intrigues that are played in power politics in the name of We the People.

We the people of India 鈥 The Story of Gangland Democracy is a reminder to Generations Next that they have to fulfill unfulfilled dreams of the savants of the nation.

Disclaimer: this book is a piece of political fiction and does not relate to any factual event and/or incidents. The author has visualized a tale that he wishes to share with the readers. Names of the characters are purely a work of fiction and do not relate to anybody living or dead.

MALOY KRISHNA DHAR (68) is a product of Calcutta University. After joining the Indian Police Service in 1964, he was seconded to the Intelligence Bureau, a platform that offered him in depth perceptions and insight into Indian politics, insurgency counter-terrorism, counterintelligence and other ground realities of the nation.

After retirement he took to freelance journalism and authored many literary works. Some of the best sellers are Open secrets 鈥 India鈥檚 intelligence Unveiled, Fulcrum of Evil 鈥 ISI, CIA. Al Qaeda Nexus, Operation Triple X and Black Thunder.

A widely acclaimed author Maloy writes about happening history in and around India, besides wider strategic issues. We the People of India is his fresh journey into the happening history of the country, which bares the uncouth truth behind India鈥檚 electoral democracy and offers a glimpse into the future that could put the country back on the rails laid down by the founding fathers.

<![CDATA[The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys]]> 9721527
- Presents practices for safe and successful psychedelic voyages, including the benefits of having a guide and how to be a guide
- Reviews the value of psychedelics for healing and self-discovery as well as how LSD has facilitated scientific and technical problem-solving
- Reveals how ultra-low doses improve cognitive functioning, emotional balance, and physical stamina

This year 600,000 people in the U.S. alone will try LSD for the the first time, joining the 23 million who have already experimented with this substance.

Called "America's wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use," James Fadiman has been involved with psychedelic research since the 1960s. In this guide to the immediate and long-term effects of psychedelic use for spiritual (high dose), therapeutic (moderate dose), and problem-solving (low dose) purposes, Fadiman outlines best practices for safe, sacred entheogenic voyages learned through his more than 40 years of experience--from the benefits of having a sensitive guide during a session (and how to be one) to the importance of the setting and pre-session intention.

Fadiman reviews the newest as well as the neglected research into the psychotherapeutic value of visionary drug use for increased personal awareness and a host of serious medical conditions, including his recent study of the reasons for and results of psychedelic use among hundreds of students and professionals. He reveals new uses for LSD and other psychedelics, including extremely low doses for improved cognitive functioning and emotional balance. Cautioning that psychedelics are not for everyone, he dispels the myths and misperceptions about psychedelics circulating in textbooks and clinics as well as on the internet. Exploring the life-changing experiences of Ram Dass, Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, and Huston Smith as well as Francis Crick and Steve Jobs, Fadiman shows how psychedelics, used wisely, can lead not only to healing but also to scientific breakthroughs and spiritual epiphanies.]]>

<![CDATA[Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future]]> 18050143
The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.

Thiel begins with the contrarian premise that we live in an age of technological stagnation, even if we鈥檙e too distracted by shiny mobile devices to notice. Information technology has improved rapidly, but there is no reason why progress should be limited to computers or Silicon Valley. Progress can be achieved in any industry or area of business. It comes from the most important skill that every leader must master: learning to think for yourself.

Doing what someone else already knows how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. But when you do something new, you go from 0 to 1. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won鈥檛 make a search engine. Tomorrow鈥檚 champions will not win by competing ruthlessly in today鈥檚 marketplace. They will escape competition altogether, because their businesses will be unique.

Zero to One presents at once an optimistic view of the future of progress in America and a new way of thinking about innovation: it starts by learning to ask the questions that lead you to find value in unexpected places.]]>

Well written and comprehensive account of our last stand and where we stand in this war to safeguard the last green spaces of our home . full of stories from the wild and fights in the conference rooms the latter of which unfortunately is the place where the most decisive blows are delivered . The story of the sparrows and the fans really hit home as it made it way too real - there might have been some ninjas cutting onions as well in the room when I was reading that chapter .An uncomfortable truth but truth it is ; would recommend not binge reading if you are prone to sentimentality .Would like to see a follow-up book which outlines positive inroads and details of how one can help . Highly recommended read . 4 Stars because I personally felt the balance tilted towards what we have lost and not what we can do .

The fourth book in the bestselling Mindfulness Essentials series, a back-to-basics collection from world-renowned Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh that introduces everyone to the essentials of mindfulness practice.

Slow, concentrated walking while focusing on in- and out-breaths allows for a unique opportunity to be in the present. There is no need to arrive somewhere鈥攅ach step is the arrival to concentration, joy, insight, and the momentary enlightenment of aliveness. When your foot touches the Earth with awareness, you make yourself alive and the Earth real, and you forget for one minute the searching, rushing, and longing that rob our daily lives of awareness and cause us to "sleepwalk" through life.

Thich Nhat Hanh shares amusing stories of the impact mindful walking has on both the walker and those who notice him, and shows how mindful walking can be a technique for diminishing depression, recapturing wonder, and expressing gratitude. Pocket-sized, with original two color illustrations by Jason DeAntonis, How to Walk 听is a unique gift for all ages, sharing a simple practice that can have a profound effect on practitioners.]]>

The Man-Eaters of Tsavo 862052
St. Martin's is proud to present a new series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick.

These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large.

Considered one of the greatest man-eating sagas of all time, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is the firsthand account of the infamous Tsavo lions. These lions--who for nearly a year terrorized East Africa--succeeded in bringing the construction of a railway line to a complete halt, and have been credited with the deaths of some one hundred people. Written by the legendary officer who shot these lions and risked death several times in the attempt, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo is not only the story of this breathtaking hunt, but of Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson's other adventures in the African bush.

"I think that the incident of the Uganda man-eating lions...is the most remarkable account of which we have any record."--Theodore Roosevelt]]>

The Jim Corbett Omnibus 475249
Man-eaters of Kumaon contains fascinating stories of tracking and shooting of man-eaters in the Indian Himalayas during the early years of the last century. The stories in The Temple Tiger display Corbett's acute awareness of sights, sounds, and life in the Indian forests, as well as his love for the human beings living in the hunting terrain. Finally, perhaps the most exciting of all of Corbett's jungle tales, The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag is a gripping narrative of a notorious leopard which spread terror in the hills of the colonial United Provinces.

Dramatic yet reflective, Corbett's writings are coloured by his deep concern and sympathy for the natural world as well as the local people and their traditions and customs. This vividly illustrated collection will appeal equally to Corbett lovers and to those concerned with the environment and wildlife.

<![CDATA[What Got You Here Won't Get You There]]> 84525 America's most sought-after executive coach shows how to climb the last few rungs of the ladder The corporate world is filled with executives, men and women who have worked hard for years to reach the upper levels of management. They're intelligent, skilled, and even charismatic. But only a handful of them will ever reach the pinnacle--and as executive coach Marshall Goldsmith shows in this book, subtle nuances make all the difference. These are small "transactional flaws" performed by one person against another (as simple as not saying thank you enough), which lead to negative perceptions that can hold any executive back. Using Goldsmith's straightforward, jargon-free advice, it's amazingly easy behavior to change. Executives who hire Goldsmith for one-on-one coaching pay $250,000 for the privilege. With this book, his help is available for 1/10,000th of the price.]]> 256 Marshall Goldsmith 1781251568 Lalit 5 3.94 2006 What Got You Here Won't Get You There

The Metamorphosis 485894 Alternate cover edition of ISBN 0553213695 / 9780553213690

"As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. He was laying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into stiff arched segments on top of which the bed quilt could hardly keep in position and was about to slide off completely. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before his eyes."

With it's startling, bizarre, yet surprisingly funny first opening, Kafka begins his masterpiece, The Metamorphosis. It is the story of a young man who, transformed overnight into a giant beetle-like insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man. A harrowing鈥攖hough absurdly comic鈥攎editation on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation, The Metamorphosis has taken its place as one of the most widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction. As W.H. Auden wrote, "Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man."]]>

Enter Lou Gerstner. The presumption was that Gerstner had joined IBM to preside over its continued dissolution into a confederation of autonomous business units, effectively eliminating the corporation that had invented many of the industry's most important technologies. Instead, Gerstner took hold of the company, making the bold decision to keep it together, defiantly announcing, "The last thing IBM needs right now is a vision."

Told in Lou Gerstner's own words, this is a story of an extraordinary turnaround, a case study in managing a crisis, and a thoughtful reflection on the computer industry and the principles of leadership. Summing up his historic business achievement, Gerstner recounts high-level meetings, explains the no-turning-back decisions that had to be made, and offers his hard-won conclusions about the essence of what makes a great company run.]]>

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world鈥檚 most powerful internet company, she feels she鈥檚 been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users鈥 personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company鈥檚 modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO.

Mae can鈥檛 believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world鈥攅ven as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public.

What begins as the captivating story of one woman鈥檚 ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.]]>

<![CDATA[So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love]]> 13525945
Not only is the clich茅 flawed鈥攑reexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work鈥攂ut it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping.

After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do. Spending time with organic farmers, venture capitalists, screenwriters, freelance computer programmers, and others who admitted to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they used and the pitfalls they avoided in developing their compelling careers.

Matching your job to a preexisting passion does not matter, he reveals. Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it.

With a title taken from the comedian Steve Martin, who once said his advice for aspiring entertainers was to "be so good they can't ignore you," Cal Newport's clearly written manifesto is mandatory reading for anyone fretting about what to do with their life, or frustrated by their current job situation and eager to find a fresh new way to take control of their livelihood. He provides an evidence-based blueprint for creating work you love.

<![CDATA[The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill: Defender of the Realm, 1940-1965]]> 746673 The Last Lion picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister鈥攚hen his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill conjured up by William Manchester and Paul Reid is a man of indomitable courage, lightning fast intellect, and an irresistible will to action.

The Last Lion brilliantly recounts how Churchill organized his nation's military response and defense; compelled FDR into supporting America's beleaguered cousins, and personified the "never surrender" ethos that helped the Allies win the war, while at the same time adapting himself and his country to the inevitable shift of world power from the British Empire to the United States.

More than twenty years in the making, The Last Lion presents a revelatory and unparalleled portrait of this brilliant, flawed, and dynamic leader. This is popular history at its most stirring.

<![CDATA[Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die]]> 69242 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The instant classic about why some ideas thrive, why others die, and how to improve your idea's chances--essential reading in the "fake news" era.

Mark Twain once observed, "A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on." His observation rings true: Urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus news stories circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas--entrepreneurs, teachers, politicians, and journalists--struggle to make them "stick."

In Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the human scale principle, using the Velcro Theory of Memory, and creating curiosity gaps. Along the way, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds--from the infamous "kidney theft ring" hoax to a coach's lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony--draw their power from the same six traits.

Made to Stick will transform the way you communicate. It's a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures): the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of the Mother Teresa Effect; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice.

Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas--and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick.]]>

In An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Col. Hadfield takes readers deep into his years of training and space exploration to show how to make the impossible possible. Through eye-opening, entertaining stories filled with the adrenaline of launch, the mesmerizing wonder of spacewalks, and the measured, calm responses mandated by crises, he explains how conventional wisdom can get in the way of achievement-and happiness. His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counterintuitive lessons: don't visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff.

You might never be able to build a robot, pilot a spacecraft, make a music video or perform basic surgery in zero gravity like Col. Hadfield. <![CDATA[The Outsourced Self: Intimate Life in Market Times]]> 12159307 From the famed author of the bestselling The Second Shift and The Time Bind, a pathbreaking look at the transformation of private life in our for-profit world

The family has long been a haven in a heartless world, the one place immune to market forces and economic calculations, where the personal, the private, and the emotional hold sway. Yet as Arlie Russell Hochschild shows in The Outsourced Self, that is no longer the case: everything that was once part of private life鈥攍ove, friendship, child rearing鈥攊s being transformed into packaged expertise to be sold back to confused, harried Americans.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews and original research, Hochschild follows the incursions of the market into every stage of intimate life. From dating services that train you to be the CEO of your love life to wedding planners who create a couple's "personal narrative"; from nameologists (who help you name your child) to wantologists (who help you name your goals); from commercial surrogate farms in India to hired mourners who will scatter your loved one's ashes in the ocean of your choice鈥擧ochschild reveals a world in which the most intuitive and emotional of human acts have become work for hire.

Sharp and clear-eyed, Hochschild is full of sympathy for overstressed, outsourcing Americans, even as she warns of the market's threat to the personal realm they are striving so hard to preserve.]]>

<![CDATA[Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies]]> 20527133 Superintelligence asks the questions: what happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life.

The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful鈥攑ossibly beyond our control. As the fate of the gorillas now depends more on humans than on the species itself, so would the fate of humankind depend on the actions of the machine superintelligence.

But we have one advantage: we get to make the first move. Will it be possible to construct a seed Artificial Intelligence, to engineer initial conditions so as to make an intelligence explosion survivable? How could one achieve a controlled detonation?]]>
