Left in the Lurch 220263304 Here is everything you need to know about the enigmatic drifter who founded the famous arts collective Los Decepcionados in southern Mexico, and then burned it to the ground. In verse, essay, and found horror, the sordid saga of Lefty Smith's tumultuous visit to the Land of the Sun lurches back into the light of day.

"From the lascivious and debauched mind that brought you The Penult and Lips, Colin Gee is back with a tale in verse of fast friendship on a wild up, down, and sideways ride. Navigate overgrown garden parties with the boys as they discuss literary world domination, as Lefty offers free advice on shitting your pants, stealing another’s girl, or why punctuation, grammar, and spelling are of no concern and what an editor is for. Pour something pleasurable into your glass and sit back and enjoy the roast."

I was left in the lurch with this one. Lurching for the tissue box, lurching for the emergency cord, lurching for the broken door lock. Lefty Smith barraged me, defiled me, spat on me, knifed me in a juke joint, robbed me, and then knifed me again in broad daylight. I had to shower after reading this. Five stars.

This is a delightful notebook that must be enjoyed in physical form. At a time of sharp and prevalent environmental crisis, climate experts pinpoint 'tipping points' as the key touchstones of irreversible ecological damage. Ultimately, it is through humanising our enduring connection to nature that we can mobilise not just action to protect nature but to actively nurture our curiosity of it. This book achieves that through the educational and the artistic. The myriad of sketches are charming and effectual. Added to this, the book actively encourages children to engage in nature via sections to record their engagements with nature. As such, I can see this book being used for building long-term childhood memories, a significant passion for nature and a cause to develop writing and observation skills. This a wonderful gift for children and comes at a time where the future and current generation's roles in stewarding our planet and its biodiversity has never been more crucial.

Healthy living is a multi-faceted problem that encompasses the personal, the familial, the dietary and so on. The UK government's recent 'smoking ban' legislation reflects a wider and growing societal understanding of the drain unhealthy lifestyle choices place on our economy and public services. Beyond that, healthy lifestyle choices are inseparable from our own sense of well-being and mental health. In the digital age, we are bombarded with health influencers and new emerging dietary trends - there are podcasts, videos, documentaries, cookery books, etc that all preach often conflicting messages on healthy living and healthy lifestyle choices. This concise handbook is engaging and actively tears down the information barriers we might see in healthy living. This book is a triumphant effort to disseminate important knowledge quickly and inclusively. Besides its genuinely commendable aims, the book is professionally made and has an integrity about it that is warm and welcoming. I was pleased with the product and felt the writer properly accomplished their stated aims.

Love is a vicious rose. Sorrell's second collection is both a scathing critique and a tender acceptance of the cruel duality of human love - be that romantic, familial or interior. Very much a continuation of his previous work, From the Mountain, the poet is concerned primarily with salvation - salvation from bitter love, from heartbreaking family turbulence, grief and a war with the self. Sorrell's style is deceptively simple. He coins aphorism, he dabbles in minimalist beauty throughout. The collection is well-rounded with a consistent motif, a central emotional location.

This is an engaging sequel that continues the legacy of its predecessor with tremendous vigour. The writing is fast-paced and as breathless as what Wells' managed with the original. It was like riding on a heat ray. Classical science fiction is simple and iconic, particularly in the Wells tradition, and the book expands on this formula with the return of the Martians. Now very much evolved to meet human resistance, there is a nerve-wracking, insurmountable undertone to the threat now posed. It is interesting to see the returning cast of characters, and indeed they are much more richly-drawn having to face such new and grave odds. Wells always had this knack for thrilling first-person narration - this is very much a continuation.

The book's main triumph is its grounding in a quintessential British landscape. There is a classical affection for Britain - its town names, the tweaks of the dialects, etc. It all built to a very cohesive atmosphere. I see later books in the series are longer and it is perfectly believable to me the writer could craft something more continuous on the same premises.

This is a fun story and well-suited to children 8-13 years old. Making the protagonist, Zack, 15 is a clever choice even though his emotional maturity and mannerism suggested to me he was younger. Readers can perhaps look up to Zack as an older brother. I think the book thrives mostly on its deep sense of adventure/plot. The high drama of a bull run. Man (boy) vs nature. I thought the book was written in a highly engaging manner and was particularly fond of the verb choices. The illustrations are fun and fit the book. Sometimes these illustrations are odd but charming.

This would be well-suited for a school library. Fun and straightforward.

I was struck by how tender and affectionate this book actually is. It's a collage of miniature items that form a complete and vivid life and a tragic loss. Embedded throughout is a philosophy to life - sisterhood, creativity, individuality. I think the real achievement is the ability to bring these feelings out of the simple - wall paint, monopoly, an affection for unicorns, a laugh. Then of course these weld together into a deeply moving and cohesive tribute to Justine. My favourite chapter was on the colour purple. I found the embrace of colours as a manifestation of grief to be extremely vivid and moving. The prose is simple throughout - the facts of multiple lives lived do not need to be overstated. Mental illness can often lead us to forget the person we once knew and the memories we once shared, this book serves as a thankful and celeberatory look at the little things that make people who they are, and what compels us to love them. Our culture places so much on the beauty of bucket lists, travel and the like, it is easier to forget that what makes us us is the much simpler things.

You can say that again. Kendall's prose operates at break-neck speed, suave, cinematic, highly-focussed. The dialogue is very sophisticated. A favourite simile of mine: "His voice croaked like a teenager taking orders at the drive-thru window." Some dreary urban grit, the extinguishing of youth and vaulting consumerism lodged in there.

Have been a big fan of short story collections for a long time, and have always valued how little passages, even single lines, can unravel a whole identity. A life in a microcosm, a single room, a daily commute. This book fits that bill perfectly. There is a kitchen-sink element: a small focal point that accelerates outwards to something more existential. Characters who shrink into themselves in aging and regret, see their environments do the same. Mundanity packs a punch in our lives.

There's a story which is entirely dialogue, which I found to be innovative. I think often times, this dialogue fits Kendall's intentions very well for an organic unravelling.

Sardonic and witty, I highly recommend people pick up this collection. It's a quick and bouncy, but still somehow graceful ride.]]>

Quality recipes, simple to follow. Professionally and beautifully made. Nourish brings the Mediterranean culinary experience firmly into the light. The book is equally delightful in both ebook and paperback form, and the instructions and text are clear throughout. This is not normally the type of book I enjoy, so was thoroughly surprised and pleased by the experience. It didn't take me long to read as I was discriminating about which recipes I thought might meet my own personal preferences. I can see how this book would help liven a family occasion or a friendly get-together with some unique and tasty food. I think the author very much accomplished their goals. While I think the book may have a predominately American primary audience, I also believe it can help shape and remould a more eclectic cuisine for readers around the world. Would highly recommend and look forward to what further succinct recipes Nourish puts into print.

I have no doubt many of these stories will stick with me for a long time - particular images, sequences of events which all lead up to a greater whole. The stories of Dionne's debut collection encapsulate the fundamental mechanisms short fiction should operate by. Deceptively simple concepts that suggest more than themselves, stories that unravel into an entire universe from a small focal point - often from a single physical object (a postcard, a wallet). The central underpinning I found was the contrast between the exterior and the interior. Characters who are alienated, defeated, bitter and inhabit almost exclusively a deep inner world. Whether it is a life of childhood fantasy, sexual awakening, bitter old age, the mundanity of a failing marriage, Dionne successfully explores characters who feel a sharp contrast between themselves and the hand life has dealt them. It is then for these circumstances to unravel, for how different characters emerge from the same broad event and test themselves against the indifference and hardship of the modern and lonely external world. Despite the disturbing qualities of some of these pieces, which of course I adore, there is a persistently charming and whimsical quality also.

I have no doubt many of these stories will stick with me for a long time - particular images, sequences of events which all lead up to a greater whole. I was particularly struck with "The Wallet", "House of Mirrors" and the title story. I am eagerly awaiting future collections which I have heard about on the grapevine. Highly recommend.
