There's never a good time to learn ˛â´ÇłÜ’r±đ your father's secret second family—especially not at the reading of the will. To add insult to injury, Nora's racy leaked videos just went viral. Nora Dash has got no reputation, no dad, and only a forgotten beach house in rural Maine to her name. There are no other Black people for miles, the place is abandoned, but at least no one will recognize her O face in the backwoods. She and her free-spirited sister Yanne haven’t even knocked the traveling dust off last season's designer boots when the first problem pops up: a fake park ranger giving tours of their property like it's his own—and he’s hotter than the local lobster boil.

Ennis "Bear" Freeman is used to people showing up unannounced on his land. So when a beautiful city girl shows up with the deed to his unofficial headquarters in one manicured hand, he gives it a week before their whole crew packs up and leaves. But it isn't long before they find out they work better together than apart. To his surprise, Nora's damned good for Bear's business, and his own secrets might turn out to be the thing that sends them packing.]]>

Starling House 65213595 A grim and gothic new tale from author Alix E. Harrow about a small town haunted by secrets that can't stay buried and the sinister house that sits at the crossroads of it all.

Eden, Kentucky, is just another dying, bad-luck town, known only for the legend of E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth-century author and illustrator who wrote The Underland--and disappeared. Before she vanished, Starling House appeared. But everyone agrees that it’s best to let the uncanny house―and its last lonely heir, Arthur Starling―go to rot.

Opal knows better than to mess with haunted houses or brooding men, but an unexpected job offer might be a chance to get her brother out of Eden. Too quickly, though, Starling House starts to feel dangerously like something she’s never had: a home.

As sinister forces converge on Starling House, Opal and Arthur are going to have to make a dire choice to dig up the buried secrets of the past and confront their own fears, or let Eden be taken over by literal nightmares.

If Opal wants a home, she’ll have to fight for it.]]>

Listen, I am SUPER late to the @alix.e.harrow party, but I just finished Starling House and this is quite literally—and instantly—one of my favourite books of all time. It's one of those books where I actually SLOWED DOWN the read because I didn't want it to end. There are the deep, rich, I-know-these-people characters: Opal, and Jasper, and Arthur, and Bev (and yes, the hellcat), all who feel so real you can touch them. But the real star of the show is the book’s slow slide into a (magic-laced) world where the rock-bottom, stick-to-your-ribs curse of poverty can be undone, where homes find you when you need them. All of this is packaged into the most stunning prose Utterly, breathtakingly magic.

When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she’s descended from magicians, she’s skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she’s just an ordinary girl who loves books. <![CDATA[Haven: Love & Disaster Book 1 (LOVE & DISASTER TRILOGY (2023 releases))]]> 197552085
Not for Doctor Wesley Williams. A disease detective hunting for cancer-causing toxins, Wesley’s life is all about healing and preventing harm. So, why does he have a reputation for breaking hearts? It’s been over a decade since he got close enough to any woman to hurt her, and he’s fine keeping love at a distance. That is, until Sage DesChamps joins his acro-yoga class.
Meeting Sage has Wesley rethinking his whole keep-love-at-arm’s-length lifestyle.

At forty-three, photojournalist-turned-artist Sage DesChamps is planning her most ambitious exhibition ever, a multi-city event designed to raise awareness about environmental issues. Sage has no time for love, especially not with someone as complicated, and apparently dangerous, as Wesley. He may be the most interesting man she’s ever met—brilliant, sweet, funny, a strong yogi, and undeniably hot with eyes the color of a healthy tropical sea, but is dating him worth the risk?

When Wesley suggests a collaboration that may boost both their careers, Sage can’t resist the opportunity. As long as she remains professional, she’ll be safe from Wesley’s charms. But it’s hard to keep it professional with a man who seems so right for her. Harder still when a violent storm traps Sage and Wesley together for days. Now, they can’t ignore their attraction or the feeling that they belong together.

But can love born in a tornado survive?]]>

Sage and Wesley’s love story also tackles so many other social justice issues. Sage is a real woman with real dimensions, and as such, she is a bundle of contradictions. A bit older but highly sensitive; somewhat fragile and yet so strong as she navigates her own emotional baggage and blockages stemming from her bi-racial identity (the systemic racism faced by racialized women becomes a central challenge to Sage and Wesley’s fledgling love story.)

Compellingly, Roi conjoins some of the grim realities of race to the economic and social impacts of climate disasters that those in historically poorer neighbourhoods, which tend to have larger non-white populations, tend to suffer much more during climate-change related events, and are much slower to recover (ie. these hoods tend to be the last to have the lights turned back on).

Where I think the true magic happens in this book, though, are the moments when Sage’s vulnerability and artistic nature shine through. Sage is an artist/photographer, and I love the way the author foregrounds her concepts and materials as a vivid, life-affirming response to climate change. Also, the storm! SPOILER ALERT: once the action starts, it’s a breathtaking roller coaster. Terrifyingly real and yet so very hopeful! 4.5/5 stars]]>

I love it when I learn something from a book, and that was exactly the case with Haven, Book 1 of the Love & Disaster Trilogy by Tara L. Roi. This book tackles important issues, the most central one being climate change and its deadly impacts. <![CDATA[Poetic Justice (Restaurantland Romance #2)]]> 217538724 Welcome to the Rose and Thorn restaurant where steamy romance is always on the menu.

Set in the funkiest of funky restaurants in the rad pre-internet 1990s, before cells, social media and streaming, and featuring a quirky cast of chefs, waiters and customers who fall in and out of love (and bed), the Restaurantland Romance novels crackle with off-beat humor, joy and passion.

Sometimes, true love requires handcuffs.

Roz is getting her life back on track. She’s sober, writing poetry again and spending her free time supporting her beloved sister who’s in prison after getting caught up in an environmental protest gone horribly wrong. Between all that and working double shifts at The Rose and Thorn, Roz has no time for romance.

But a little harmless flirting never hurt anyone, right?

Then Roz meets Hudson, the new line cook. He's tall, handsome and mysterious. The only thing loner Hudson will reveal about his past is that he picked up his rad cooking skills in prison. Hudson seems to enjoy Roz's flirting, but he's guarded.

Of course, love won't be denied, and Roz and Hudson soon find themselves breathlessly swept away in a magical romance—a once-in-a-lifetime certainty that they are meant only for each other.

All that passion explodes when they discover a shared past, a shocking coincidence and a secret that threatens to rip their future apart. A furious Roz swears never to speak to heartbroken Hudson again. But when they end up handcuffed together at an eco-protest, the truth will come out—for better or worse.

From the tops of majestic trees deep in the wilderness to a fiery May Day protest in Portland, from the pressures of prison life to the demands of working in a chaotic restaurant, Poetic Justice tells a story of the revolutionary act of falling in love.

Poetic Justice is a dual-timeline, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity workplace romance. This is the second book in the Restaurantland Romance series.]]>

I absolutely devoured this love story set in 1990s Oregon between a gentle environmental activist and a soul-wounded poet. The writing is exquisite, with a deep attention to detail that brings the world to sharp, vivid life. As a result, the characters are multi-dimensional and oh-so human. Roz and Hudson face real problems (Roz struggles with alcoholic addiction; Hudson is a recently released convict trying to readjust to society) - not often tackled in romance novels - and yet I found myself more strongly attached to them for this, and - it goes without saying - rooting for them. The world of the restaurant they meet in could have been difficult to pull off (there is a large cast of secondary characters) but it absolutely works here: I love LuRon, who has some of the best deadpan lines in the book, Ione the Fierce, and Jon, who for some reason is a font of savant-like info from the dish pit -- does he get his own story soon?? I hope so!! This is my first read from this writing duo but it will definitely not be my last. Excellent for fans of: kitchen romances; romances with environmental themes; romances that tackle difficult personal problems such as addiction. Roth's writing in this book is utterly spectacular! I was deeply invested in Roth's paranormal world and characters, specifically the mystery of the flower (and why Dymitar wants to help another with it) is so unique and special, and the Eastern European folklore is fascinating and fresh here. By the end of the novel I found myself truly surprised - I felt like the story was just getting going. (Maybe because I had been expecting more action? Was the book short??) I hope there will be more instalments to this story?! 4.5 out of 5 stars. What an amazing writer!

Susan’s search for her father begins with her mother’s possibly misremembered or misspelt surnames, a reading room ticket, and a silver cigarette case engraved with something that might be a coat of arms.

Merlin has a quest of his own, to find the Old World entity who used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan’s. The Deathsniffer's Assistant 23582513
After losing his parents in the Floating Castle Incident, the sensitive and mannered Chris Buckley has spent six years raising his magically talented little sister, Rosemary. They have been living on the savings that his once-wealthy family left behind. That money is drying up, and Chris finds himself with no choice but to seek out work in Darrington City as it spirals into a depression. The only employer willing to consider his empty résumé is O. Faraday, the manic Deathsniffer. Faraday's special magical gift is a heightened intuition which is invaluable in hunting down murderers.

When a Duchess calls on Olivia to solve the mystery of her dead husband, Chris finds himself tangled in Faraday’s daily life and unable to extract himself from the macabre questions of the investigation. His involvement grows more complicated as political forces close around Rosemary. They only see her as a tool that can be used to end the depression at the cost of her freedom—or even her life.

Chris must juggle the question of who killed Viktor val Daren with the responsibility of keeping Rosemary and her magic safe from those who would use her up and toss her aside. Worst of all, he begins to learn that the national disaster that took his parents lives may not have been the accident it seemed.

Set in a world very similar to 1900s London, The Deathsniffer’s Assistant combines the investigative murder mystery with a tale of personal and societal redemption. It is about the relationships between broken people who clash more often than not, but manage to shape and learn from one another in spite of this. The story is told from the perspective of Christopher Buckley, young and impressionable and influenced by the prejudices of his time, as he finds himself surrounded by a cast of exceptional women whose differing characters will slowly reconstruct his understanding of strength in others—and in himself.]]>

Accompanied by her father’s handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father’s madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island’s inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father’s genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells’s classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman’s Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we’ll do anything to know and the truths we’ll go to any lengths to protect.

<![CDATA[Relentless (Shattered Hearts, #2)]]> 17182049
Claire Nixon is a college student with a past full of secrets and heartbreak.

At seven years old, the death of her mother by drug overdose destroys her faith in humanity and herself as she is tossed from one foster home to another. Feeling unwanted and disposable, she fights to keep herself safe in the system. Until, at the age of fifteen, she is saved by her first love, and soon-to-be rock star, Chris Knight and his mother, who quickly becomes the mother she always wanted.

When Claire encourages Chris to leave town to pursue his dreams of musical stardom, both Claire and Chris don't realize this will be the biggest mistake of their lives.

One year after Chris leaves on tour, Claire has carved out a new life for herself in a new city far away from the life she left behind with Chris. On a fateful morning, she meets sexy surfer Adam Parker.

To Claire, Adam is just another flirty customer at the cafe, until a chance encounter and seemingly innocent comment spurs a bet between them. The bet is simple: If Adam can get Claire to reveal the secret that made her drop out of college and leave her life behind, she has to re-enroll. If he doesn't succeed, she gets to keep her secret and he has to stop stalking her at the cafe.

Claire thinks she has this one in the bag. She's perfected the art of forgetting her past. But she isn't prepared for Adam's relentless pursuit or for him to share his own secrets. And she's definitely not prepared for the love of her life, Chris Knight, and her secret, to come banging down her door one year later.

New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language, drug use, and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18. ]]>
