Since the age of ten, March Franklin has been orphaned, alone, and on the run from his own disturbing ability - to feel and experience the deepest emotions and memories of the darkest souls among us. But when his grip on sanity is strained by one malevolent criminal, March commits a gruesome act, forcing himself into a dangerous new life direction and the cross-country pursuit of a narcissistic sociopath unlike anyone he’s ever experienced.

Sophie Danner barely made it out alive. Ten years after her horrifying ordeal at the hands of a violent pedophile, she’s recovered from her trauma by helping other survivors do the same. But a flurry of murderous attacks confirms her fears that an evil player from her painful past has returned…and his delusional plans include her. With her best friend’s life in the balance, Sophie must trust a mysterious drifter to help her track down a psychopath and stop his killing spree…before he loses his tenuous grip on reality.

SNEAK

A few grunts and a few seconds later, Jabe emerged, leaning forward with effort as he dragged Elijah out of the house feet-first. Elijah’s form bumped and snagged as Jabe drug him over the threshold and down the three steps, his head thunking on each one. A vicious, bleeding cut on his right eye was already starting to swell.

As Jabe proceeded toward the BMW, March steeled himself and stepped up onto the porch, the gun raised with a clear line of sight to Jabe’s broad back.

“Stop, March called out, surprising himself with the ring of authority in his voice.

Jabe stopped, then turned slightly, peering at March from the corner of his eye with no indication of surprise whatsoever. “Ahhh, he said. “You. Then he actually smiled. “One moment.

He continued dragging Elijah the remaining twenty feet to the SUV.

“I said stop! March’s voice had lost a bit of its former edge.

“I heard you. Jabe dropped Elijah’s feet and opened the lift gate of the BMW. He then stooped down and deadlifted Elijah from the ground like he weighed nothing.

“I said stop, goddammit! Put him down! I will @#$%ing shoot you! But now March didn’t even believe himself.

What the @#$%?! People are supposed to stop when you point a gun at them!

That sinking and now familiar feeling of being in over his head started creeping up from within his gut. He had hardly ever even held a gun. Now he was pointing one at a psychopath who had just killed an old woman and a police officer in the same night, out here in the woods in the middle of Bum@#$%, Nowhere.

Jabe continued without pause, dumping Elijah’s limp body into the cargo area with a thump. He then casually removed a fob from his pocket, looked at March, then pressed a button. Beep. Beep. Beep. The automatic gate slowly closed itself on its new cargo.

Jabe took two slow steps toward March, a curious expression on his face. “I had a feeling we would meet tonight. It is about time.]]>

<![CDATA[Fundamentalism and American Culture (New Edition)]]> 82621
For Marsden, fundamentalists are not just religious conservatives; they are conservatives who are willing to take a stand and to fight. In Marsden's words (borrowed by Jerry Falwell), "a fundamentalist is an evangelical who is angry about something." In the late nineteenth century American Protestantism was gradually dividing between liberals who were accepting new scientific and higher critical views that contradicted the Bible and defenders of the more traditional evangelicalism. By the 1920s a full-fledged "fundamentalist" movement had developed in protest against theological changes in the churches and changing mores in the culture. Building on networks of evangelists, Bible conferences, Bible institutes, and missions agencies, fundamentalists coalesced into a major protest movement that proved to have remarkable staying power.

For this new edition, a major new chapter compares fundamentalism since the 1970s to the fundamentalism of the 1920s, looking particularly at the extraordinary growth in political emphasis and power of the more recent movement. Never has it been more important to understand the history of fundamentalism in our rapidly polarizing nation. Marsen's carefully researched and engrossing work remains the best way to do just that.]]>

<![CDATA[In Discordance with the Scriptures: American Protestant Battles Over Translating the Bible (Religion in America)]]> 2459807 Greek New Testament appeared, scholars increasingly recognized significant errors and inconsistencies in the KJV. This soon 1ed to the Bible revision movement, whose goal was the uniting of all English-speaking Protestants behind one new, improved version of the Bible. Ironically, as Peter Thuesen
shows in this fascinating history, the revision movement in fact resulted in a vast proliferation of English scripture editions and an enduring polarization of American Christians over versions of Holy Writ. The recurrent controversies over Bible translations, he argues, tell us less about the linguistic issues dividing conservatives and liberals than about the theological assumptions they have long held in common.

<![CDATA[Cotton Patch Rebel: The Story of Clarence Jordan]]> 26884853
For Clarence, the Gospel was very clear about these issues. Moreover, he believed that Jesus's teachings were not just abstract principles but were meant to be applied directly to everyday life. That got him into trouble too, especially among certain church-going people.

Along the way, Clarence became a progressive farmer, a sought-after preacher, a Greek scholar, an author, a precursor of the Civil Rights movement, and a family man. An irrepressible sense of humor enlivened all these aspects of his life.

Today, Clarence Jordan is best known as the author of the Cotton Patch Gospels and as the inspiration for Habitat for Humanity. The story of the making of this extraordinary man is not so widely known. Cotton Patch Rebel tells that story.

"How I rejoice that young people will now be introduced to this amazing man, Clarence Jordan, and his prophetic witness for racial equality and peace! Ann Trousdale tells his story in a down-to-earth, yet inspiring way, and reminds us all of the difference one life can make. I cannot wait to share copies with the young people in my life."

<![CDATA[Armageddon: What the Bible Really Says about the End]]> 61271799 A “humane, thoughtful, and intelligent (The New York Times Book Review) bestselling Biblical scholar reveals why our popular understanding of the Apocalypse is all wrong—and why that matters.

You’ll find nearly everything the Bible says about the end in the Book of Revelation: a mystifying prophecy filled with bizarre symbolism, violent imagery, mangled syntax, confounding contradictions, and very firm ideas about the horrors that await us all. But no matter what you think Revelation reveals—whether you read it as a literal description of what will soon come to pass, interpret it as a metaphorical expression of hope for those suffering now, or only recognize its highlights from pop culture—you’re almost certainly wrong.

In Armageddon, acclaimed New Testament authority Bart D. Ehrman delves into the most misunderstood—and possibly most dangerous—book of the Bible, on a “vigilantly persuasive (The Washington Post) tour through three millennia of Judeo-Christian thinking about how our world will end. With wit and verve, he explores the alarming social and political consequences of expecting an imminent apocalypse, considers whether the message of Revelation may be at odds with the teachings of Jesus, and offers inspiring insight into how to live in the face of an uncertain future.

By turns hilarious, moving, troubling, and provocative, Armageddon is nothing short of revelatory in its account of what the Bible really says about the end.]]>

<![CDATA[With Hitler to the End: The Memoirs of Adolf Hitler's Valet]]> 6745891 During his years of service, Linge was responsible for all aspects of Hitler’s household and was constantly by his side. He claims that only Eva Braun stood closer to Hitler over these years.

Here, Linge recounts the daily routine in Hitler’s his eating habits, his foibles, his preferences, his sense of humor, and his private life with Eva Braun. In fact, Linge believed Hitler’s closest companion was his dog Blondi. After the war Linge said in an interview, “It was easier for him to sign a death warrant for an officer on the front than to swallow bad news about the health of his dog. Linge also charts the changes in Hitler’s character during their time together and his fading health during the last years of the war. During his last days, Hitler’s right eye began to hurt intensely and Linge was responsible for administering cocaine drops to kill the pain. In a number of instances—such as with the Stauffenberg bomb plot of July 1944—Linge gives an excellent eyewitness account of events. He also gives thumbnail profiles of the prominent members of Hitler’s “court: Hess, Speer, Bormann and Ribbentrop amongst them.

Though Linge held an SS rank, he claims not to have been a Nazi Party member. His profile of one of history’s worst demons is not blindly uncritical, but it is nonetheless affectionate. The Hitler that emerges is a multi-faceted unpredictable and demanding, but not of an otherwise unpleasant nature. 12 b&w illustrations]]>

<![CDATA[The Word: On the Translation of the Bible]]> 60301201
This book examines how saints, scholars and interpreters from ancient times down to the present have produced versions of the Bible in the language of their day while remaining true to the original. It explains the challenges they negotiated, from minute textual ambiguities up to the sweep of style and stark differences in form and thought between the earliest writings and the latest, and it exposes the bearing these have on some of the most profound questions of faith: the nature of God, the existence of the soul and possibility of its salvation.

Reading dozens of renderings alongside their ancient Hebrew and Greek antecedents, John Barton traces the migration of biblical words and ideas across linguistic borders, illuminating original meanings as well as the ways they were recast. 'Translators have been among the principal agents in mediating the Bible's message,' he writes, 'even in shaping what that message is.' At the separation of Christianity from Judaism and Protestantism from Catholicism, Barton demonstrates, vernacular versions did not only spring from fault lines in religious thinking but also inspired and moulded them. The product of a lifetime's study of scripture, The Word itself reveals the central book of our culture anew - as it was written and as we know it.]]>

<![CDATA[The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism: How the Evangelical Battle over the End Times Shaped a Nation]]> 61769138 Ěý
InĚý The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism , Daniel G. Hummel illuminates how dispensationalism, despite often being dismissed as a fringe end-times theory, shaped Anglo-American evangelicalism and the larger American cultural imagination.
Ěý
Hummel locates dispensationalism’s origin in the writings of the nineteenth-century Protestant John Nelson Darby, who established many of the hallmarks of the movement, such as premillennialism and belief in the rapture. Though it consistently faced criticism, dispensationalism held populist, and briefly scholarly, appeal—visible in everything from turn-of-the-century revivalism to apocalyptic bestsellers of the 1970s to current internet conspiracy theories.
Ěý
Measured and irenic, Hummel objectively evaluates evangelicalism’s most resilient and contentious popular theology. As the first comprehensive intellectual-cultural history of its kind,Ěý The Rise and Fall of Dispensationalism Ěýis a must-read for students and scholars of American religion.]]>

<![CDATA[Early Explorers of Bible Lands]]> 29968433
Here are the stories of John Lewis Burckhardt, William Francis Lynch, James T. Barclay, Selah Merrill, and other explorers of Bible lands from the mid- to late-nineteenth century. Most of these men did not engage in archaeology as we commonly define it today, but their contributions set the stage for modern archaeology. They were not excavators, but students of geography, nature, languages, customs, traditions, and the Bible--all of which are vital to a more refined understanding of the Bible.
As they traversed Palestine, these explorers encountered inscriptions and even previously unidentified languages (e.g., Hittite). Lewis's accounts reveal their interests, almost presciently, in the categories of anthropology as currently defined--cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, linguistics, and archaeology. These pursuits laid the groundwork for the more comprehensive and interdisciplinary studies that have eventually become the trademark of both biblical studies and the archaeology of the biblical world. As Lewis shows, we owe explorers a great debt of gratitude for their pioneering work.]]>

<![CDATA[Rescuing the Gospel: The Story and Significance of the Reformation]]> 27066897
The Reformation unfolded in the cathedrals and town squares of Europe--in Wittenberg, Worms, Rome, Geneva, and Zurich--and it is a stirring story of courage and cowardice, of betrayal and faith.

The story begins with the Catholic Church and its desperate need for reform. The dramatic events that followed are traced from John Wycliffe in England, to the burning of John Hus at the stake in Prague, to the rampant sale of indulgences in the cities and towns of Germany, to Martin Luther nailing the Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Castle Church in 1517, to John Calvin's reform of Geneva.

Erwin Lutzer captures the people, places, and big ideas that fueled the Reformation and explains its lasting influence on the church and Western Civilization.]]>

<![CDATA[Science and Religion (The Great Courses)]]> 24518941
Professor Lawrence M. Principe unfolds a surprisingly cooperative dynamic in which theologians and natural scientists share methods, ideas, aspirations, and a tradition of disputational dialogue.

St. Augustine warned that it is dangerous for religious people to ignore science: "Many non-Christians are well versed in natural knowledge, so they can detect vast ignorance in such a Christian and laugh it to scorn." He added that interpretation of biblical passages must be informed by the current state of demonstrable knowledge.

On the other hand, Sir Isaac Newton freely discusses the attributes and activities of God in Principia Mathematica, which sets forth his theory of gravity and laws of motion.

These examples represent the traditional relationship of science and religion that is too often obscured by the divisive, hot-headed rhetoric and the gross oversimplifications we often see in today's headlines. Long before the shouting and the sloganeering, scientists and theologians pursued a unity of truth, and most theologians have agreed with the advice of Galileo's colleague, Cardinal Baronio, that the Bible "tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go."

Once we understand this, we have a new perspective on many present-day controversies. The current antievolution furor, for example, centers on the fixation that Genesis 1 should be taken literally, an issue that had been resolved by theologians long ago. Professor Principe deems it "astonishingly trivial" and guides you through far more interesting arguments of advanced theology about powers and limits of human knowledge—the difficulty of identifying causation, and the means by which God acts in the world. He shows how science gives theologians powerful tools for enriching, not contradicting, their understanding of ultimate truths.

The Search for Answers

You will explore questions that are important to all religions, but the focus is on interactions in the "Latin West" where modern science largely took root. This includes formerly Latin-speaking Western European and Mediterranean regions, and the offspring of European culture, North America. The course spotlights the predominant religion of these lands: Christianity.

Our search is punctuated by Professor Principe's wit and passion. In a review of one of his previous courses, AudioFile magazine acclaimed him as "clearly a master of his subject. Equally clear is his passion for teaching it." With fluency in three ancient languages, Professor Principe is a student's living link to the primary sources he has read and studied in their original languages. Through his reading of such texts as the original minutes of the Inquisition, for example, he is able to grant you the rare opportunity to read between the lines of what was written. In addition, the professor holds faculty appointments in three diverse fields—history of science, philosophy, and chemistry—which allow him to synthesize materials across disciplines and convey the big picture with stunning clarity. His lectures are colored with the passion of someone who has devoted a lifetime to exploring the interaction of science and religion.

Moving from the early centuries of the Christian era and the Middle Ages to our own day, he exposes the truth about the Galileo Affair and provides a revealing picture of the circuslike Scopes Trial.

You will share St. Augustine's profound ideas about reason and faith. Follow St. Thomas Aquinas's exploration of miracles—the need to identify them is one example of how scientific and theological inquiry overlap. Meet a 19th-century writer whose anti-Catholic diatribe spread myths that persist today.

Learn about the courage (and stubbornness) of Galileo, the unexpected rationality of his accusers, the inspiration of Darwin's natural selection, and the religious implications of Lemaître's Big Bang.

As Professor Principe claims, the solution to this modern conflict is easy—it is the study of history. Such study will equip you to join that partnership with a vocabulary of ideas and a clear, historical perspective on the science/religion relationship. These tools will help you participate more effectively in a dialogue that is as immediate and thought-provoking today as it was hundreds of years ago.]]>

<![CDATA[Death in Florence: The Medici, Savonarola, and the Battle for the Soul of a Renaissance City]]> 25328957 By the end of the fifteenth century, Florence was well established as the home of the Renaissance. As generous patrons to the likes of Botticelli and Michelangelo, the ruling Medici embodied the progressive humanist spirit of the age, and in Lorenzo the Magnificent they possessed a diplomat capable of guarding the militarily weak city in a climate of constantly shifting allegiances between the major Italian powers.

However, in the form of Savonarola, an unprepossessing provincial monk, Lorenzo found his nemesis. Filled with Old Testament fury and prophecies of doom, Savonarola's sermons reverberated among a disenfranchised population, who preferred medieval Biblical certainties to the philosophical interrogations and intoxicating surface glitter of the Renaissance. Savonarola's aim was to establish a 'City of God' for his followers, a new kind of democratic state, the likes of which the world had never seen before. The battle which this provoked would be a fight to the death, a series of sensational events - invasions, trials by fire, the 'Bonfire of the Vanities', terrible executions and mysterious deaths - featuring a cast of the most important and charismatic Renaissance figures.

This famous struggle has often been portrayed as a simple clash of wills between a benign ruler and religious fanatic, between secular pluralism and repressive extremism. However, in an exhilaratingly rich and deeply researched story, Paul Strathern reveals the paradoxes, self-doubts and political compromises which made the battle for the soul of the Renaissance city one of the most complex and important moments in Western history.

The Bookseller of Kabul 9838
For more than twenty years Sultan Khan defied the authorities—be they communist or Taliban—to supply books to the people of Kabul. He was arrested, interrogated and imprisoned by the communists, and watched illiterate Taliban soldiers burn piles of his books in the street. He even resorted to hiding most of his stock—almost ten thousand books—in attics all over Kabul.

But while Khan is passionate in his love of books and his hatred of censorship, he also has strict views on family life and the role of women. As an outsider, Åsne Seierstad found herself in a unique position, able to move freely between the private, restricted sphere of the women—including Khan’s two wives—and the freer, more public lives of the men.

It is an experience that Seierstad finds both fascinating and frustrating. As she steps back from the page and allows the Khans to speak for themselves, we learn of proposals and marriages, hope and fear, crime and punishment. The result is a genuinely gripping and moving portrait of a family, and a clear-eyed assessment of a country struggling to free itself from history.' to 'This mesmerizing portrait of a proud man who, through three decades and successive repressive regimes, heroically braved persecution to bring books to the people of Kabul has elicited extraordinary praise throughout the world and become a phenomenal international bestseller. The Bookseller of Kabul is startling in its intimacy and its details—a revelation of the plight of Afghan women and a window into the surprising realities of daily life in today’s Afghanistan.']]>

Central to the book is Bultmann's attempt to reconcile critical, historical and theological New Testament studies, and the ultimate failure of that synthesis. <![CDATA[The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies (Oxford Studies in Historical Theology)]]> 9195848 The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies examines the creation of the academic Bible. Beginning with the fragmentation of biblical interpretation in the centuries after the Reformation, Michael Legaspi shows how the weakening of scriptural authority in the Western churches altered the role of biblical interpretation. Focusing on renowned German scholar Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791), Legaspi explores the ways in which critics reconceived the role of the Bible. This book offers a new account of the origins of biblical studies, illuminating the relation of the Bible to churchly readers, theological interpreters, academic critics, and people in between. It explains why, in an age of religious resurgence, modern biblical criticism may no longer be in a position to serve as the Bible's disciplinary gatekeeper.]]> 240 Michael C. F.F. Bruce: A Life 19324332
Evangelicals have often wrestled with two the relation between academic theology and church life, and the quest for recognition of their status as credible interpreters of the Bible. Frederick Fyvie Bruce (1910 -1990) was one of the most influential British biblical scholars of the 20th century, and his career offers valuable insights into these issues, as well as shedding light on the ways in which Evangelicalism was changing from the 1950s onwards. This biography integrates discussion of his family life, his activity as a member of the Open Brethren, and his academic career. Tim Grass argues that Bruce, like his father, was always something of an evangelist at heart.]]>
306 Timothy Grass 1842277723 G0thamite 5
One factoid surprised me: Bruce never held an earned doctorate. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from the University of Aberdeen in 1957. His scholarship, however, was not questioned as his early training as a Classicist turned Biblical Scholar provided him with many teaching opportunities around the world. He traveled widely, spoken often and mentored many students along the way.

He grew up in the culture of the Plymouth Brethern, a primitivist sect originating in Ireland and noted for its conservative Biblical interpretation and premillennial view of eschatalogy, thanks to J. N. Darby. Bruce was not afraid to buck the system and did not buy into teachings just because it was his heritage. review:
Having read a number of his works, and specifically after having finished his Commentary on Acts (NICNT series), I decided to read about his life. Tim Grass' work is the first ever full-length biography of Bruce. Although Bruce authored his autobiography in 1980 (Remembrance of Things Past), Tim brings us up to date and includes many events and personalities you will not find elsewhere.

He was a serious but open-minded scholar, not afraid to learn from all sides of an issue and coming to his own conclusions, even if it differed with his own tradition.

<![CDATA[A History of the Interpretation of the Acts of the Apostles]]> 1383540 Book by Gasque, W. Ward W. Ward Gasque 0943575125 G0thamite 5
He begins the major portion of his work reviewing the conclusions and influence of F. C. Baur and the Tubingen school. This school of thought has cast a long shadow over New Testament research and Acts and Pauline studies. It is still accepted in part today by many scholars. He then reviews the critiques of Baur and his disciples and traces the continuing streams of both sides into his own day. Next, he takes on the work of British and American scholars who, on the whole, are more conservative in their treatment of the historicity of Acts than their German counterparts, although he does highlight some German conservatives who were not afraid to break with Baur and company. He wraps up his work with reviewing both Dibelius and Conzelmann and their contribution. An addendum added to the second edition (reviewed here) brings his study into the 1980's. I did find an article from the journal, Themelios, Volume 14, Issue 1, in which he has taken us into the late '80s. It seems this has become a major focus of his life's work and you'll be hard pressed to find an improvement on the research he has given us. ]]>

review:
If you ever wanted to know the history of the interpretation of the Acts of the Apostles from the critical era to 1970, this book is for you. However, let me throw a little alliteration at you. This book is one seriously slow scholarly slog. Dr. Gasque reviews the major commentaries from the modern period (Reformation forward) and could easily be subtitled: From Calvin to Conzelmann. As you might expect, German scholarship has a major role to play. He doesn't just tell you what they have to say, he also includes judicious quotes from the author so that they speak for themselves. German and French quotations are translated into English at the back of the book for reference. His work is copiously footnoted and contains both an author and scripture index. In addition to the major commentaries, he also includes important material from dissertations, festschrifts, monographs and professional journal articles. Not many stones are left unturned.

<![CDATA[Paul and Jesus: How the Apostle Transformed Christianity]]> 13260505 In this “compulsively readable exploration of the tangled world of Christian origins (Publishers Weekly), religious historian James Tabor illuminates the earliest years of Jesus teachings before Paul shaped them into the religion we know today. This fascinating examination of the earliest years of Christianity reveals how the man we call St. Paul shaped Christianity as we know it today. Historians know almost nothing about the two decades following the crucifixion of Jesus, when his followers regrouped and began to spread his message. During this time Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles. Using the oldest Christian documents that we have—the letters of Paul—as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity. Tabor shows how Paul separated himself from Peter and James to introduce his own version of Christianity, which would continue to develop independently of the message that Jesus, James, and Peter preached. Paul and Jesus illuminates the fascinating period of history when Christianity was born out of Judaism.]]> 320 James D. review:
I'm just dropping top of mind thoughts about this work. Tabor presents a radically different picture of Paul than held by evangelicals. He presents a very "Baurian" view of early Christianity, i.e., the Peter and apostles/Paul conflict thesis. He argues that Paul invented what we know today as Western Christianity. Paul hijacked the early Jesus movement and our New Testament presents Paul's point of view and minimizes that of Peter. Paul was the first supersessionist. Paul turned the second-temple Messianic Banquet meal into a bloody sacrifice experience. He turned the normal Jewish ritual cleansing into a baptism that puts one into contact with the "cosmic Christ." Acts hides the conflict to a large degree between Paul and Peter while Paul's letters give us the real story, especially Galatians and the Corinthians letters. Peter and Paul were bitter rivals. He accepts only 7 of the 13 letters of Paul. He draws on non-canonical sources in addition to the New Testament in support of his thesis. Paul's new vision of Christianity was achieved as the churches became more and more Gentile and the canon that was forming favored Paul's views and minimized the voices of the original Messiah movement (Peter, James and the Twelve). If you don't share Tabor's view of things, you will still come away challenged and spurred on to study Paul from another perspective - always a good thing - to continue learning from different ideas. I found myself returning to the Scriptures and testing his ideas against mine. A great exercise!

Paul: A Biography 35491867
For centuries, Paul, the apostle who "saw the light on the Road to Damascus" and made a miraculous conversion from zealous Pharisee persecutor to devoted follower of Christ, has been one of the church’s most widely cited saints. While his influence on Christianity has been profound, N. T. Wright argues that Bible scholars and pastors have focused so much attention on Paul’s letters and theology that they have too often overlooked the essence of the man’s life and the extreme unlikelihood of what he achieved.

To Wright, "The problem is that Paul is central to any understanding of earliest Christianity, yet Paul was a Jew; for many generations Christians of all kinds have struggled to put this together." Wright contends that our knowledge of Paul and appreciation for his legacy cannot be complete without an understanding of his Jewish heritage. Giving us a thoughtful, in-depth exploration of the human and intellectual drama that shaped Paul, Wright provides greater clarity of the apostle’s writings, thoughts, and ideas and helps us see them in a fresh, innovative way.

Paul is a compelling modern biography that reveals the apostle’s greater role in Christian history—as an inventor of new paradigms for how we understand Jesus and what he accomplished—and celebrates his stature as one of the most effective and influential intellectuals in human history.]]>

review:
Philo's telling of Gaius Caligula's hatred of the Jews is recounted in detail. Gaius sets into motion a plan to install a huge statue of Zeus in the interior of the Temple. Petronius, legate of Syria, is caught between a rock and a hard place because Gaius has commissioned him to carry out his plans to find sculptors to create the statue. Petronius knows this will create a rebellion among the Jews and lead to war but he dare not disappoint the Emperor. A large contingent of Jews confront Petronius and beg him to not carry out Gaius' plans. Petronius is moved by their story and stalls by slowing down the construction of the statue. He writes a letter to Gaius asking for more time. Gaius sees through Petronius' ruse and is furious. King Agrippa is told of Gaius' plans and writes a passionate letter to Gaius in the hopes he can persuade him to change his mind. In the end, Gaius relents, but not without more sinister things on his mind. Philo had plans to write a follow-up to this book, but we do not have it. Great background material here for understanding Jewish and Roman relations in the first century AD. Helpful for an understanding the New Testament in its context.

<![CDATA[Myths and Mistakes in New Testament Textual Criticism]]> 48723968 Since the unexpected popularity of Bart Ehrman's bestselling Misquoting Jesus, textual criticism has become a staple of Christian apologetics.
Ehrman's skepticism about recovering the original text of the New Testament does deserve a response. However, this renewed apologetic interest in textual criticism has created fresh problems for evangelicals. An unfortunate proliferation of myths, mistakes, and misinformation has arisen about this technical area of biblical studies.
In this volume Elijah Hixson and Peter Gurry, along with a team of New Testament textual critics, offer up-to-date, accurate information on the history and current state of the New Testament text that will serve apologists and Christian students even as it offers a self-corrective to evangelical excesses.]]>

Nonetheless, the authors of these chapters correct an over-zealous generation of Christian apologists who tend to make uninformed statements, inflate numbers generous to their side of the argument and who repeat a past generation's outdated information. It is lazy. It is careless. And in the end, it hurts the case for Christians who try to make a reasoned argument for why we can trust the Bible. It will bite you when people figure out your evidence is not fair and accurate.

Evangelical Christianity has taken a beating lately (some of it deserved) for misrepresenting textual evidence of the New Testament. Just witness the First-Century Manuscript fiasco. We are still stinging from this. At the SBL Annual Meeting just a few days ago I sat in on the panel that lambasted evangelical scholars and institutions for just such a careless attitude (with many of them in the room).

Jesus and the Zealots 1111428
Knjiga "Isus i Zeloti" S.G.F. Four stars for a reasoned, articulate, and scholarly presentation. I disagree with Brandon's conclusions but he has made as good a case as anyone can for a Jesus who was sympathetic to the Zealot movement. If you want to learn about the Zealot movement in the first century and the causes for the First Jewish Revolt, then read this book. In order to get to the militaristic jesus he wants there are many assumptions, presuppositions and avant-garde interpretations of familiar passages. Nonetheless, a good read for those interested in the historical jesus.

<![CDATA[St. Paul: The Traveller and the Roman Citizen]]> 41078678 Making History. The Home of 99p/99c History Books.

St Paul was one of the most influential figures in the early Church.

But who was he?

And why was he so important?

William Mitchell Ramsay, one of the twentieth century’s foremost scholars on the early church, here uncovers the real story of St Paul.

Ramsay charts his journey from Antioch to Galatia, Asia Minor to Macedonia, his shipwreck off Malta to his final years in Rome.

Using archaeological evidence to further understand the writings of the New Testament allows Ramsay to gain a new layer of meaning behind Paul’s work.

Although Paul was never one of the original Twelve Apostles he used his status as a Jew and a Roman to talk to wide audiences across the Mediterranean and brought Christianity to a larger number of people in the 1st century AD.

Paul’s influence over the early church was immense, and fourteen of the twenty-seven books in the New Testament have traditionally been attributed to Paul.

He continues to be a revered figure of the Christian faith as his continue to be vital roots of the theology, worship, and pastoral life in the Catholic and Protestant traditions of the West, and the Orthodox traditions of the East.

<![CDATA[Protestant Biblical Interpretation: A Textbook of Hermeneutics]]> 195079
"Hermeneutics," writes the author, "is the science and art of Biblical interpretation. . . . As such it forms one of the most important members of the theological sciences. This is especially true for conservative Protestantism, which looks on the Bible as . . . the only authoritative voice of God to man."

After surveying the history of biblical interpretation, the author devotes seventy pages to explicating "the Protestant system of hermeneutics." He then discusses the doctrinal, devotional, and practical uses of the Bible. Following a chapter on the hermeneutical dimension of the problem of biblical inerrancy and secular science, he concludes with chapters on the interpretation of types, prophecy, and parables.]]>

<![CDATA[The Gospel of the Lord: How the Early Church Wrote the Story of Jesus]]> 23875440 Balanced, comprehensive survey of the critical questions involved in studying the four Gospels

In this book, through a distinctive evangelical and critical approach, Michael Bird explores the historical development of the four canonical Gospels. He shows how the memories and faith of the earliest believers formed the Gospel accounts of Jesus that got written and, in turn, how these accounts further shaped the early church.

Bird's study clarifies the often confusing debates over the origins of the canonical Gospels. Bird navigates recent concerns and research as he builds an informed case for how the early Christ followers wrote and spread the story of Jesus -- the story by which they believed they were called to live. The Gospel of the Lord is ideal for students or anyone who wants to know the story behind the four Gospels.

Loveday Alexander, Stephen C. Barton, Richard Bauckham, Richard Burridge, Michael B. Thompson, and Francis Watson examine such topics as the extent of communication between early Christian churches, book production and circulation in the Graeco-Roman world, the Gospel genre and its audience, the relationships between the Gospels, the faulty enterprise of reconstructing Gospel communities, and the hermeneutical and theological pitfalls of reading the Gospels as community texts. By putting in question a large body of assumptions that are almost universally accepted in contemporary scholarship, this book could fundamentally change both the method and the findings of Gospel interpretation.]]>

review:
Although this book was first published in 1998, it deserves a second look by anyone interested in the interpretation of the gospels in recent history. It is a thorough critique of form and redaction critical approaches to the study of the gospels. It takes particular aim at the so-called "consensus" view (less of one now, hopefully) that the each gospel was composed by an author directed to a specific church situation (the Markan "community" for example). Rather, the authors (Bauckham is the editor) show the flaws in this approach and revive the idea that the gospels were meant for a wide general audience. Wholeheartedly recommended !

<![CDATA[From Jesus to Christ: The Origins of the New Testament Images of Christ]]> 548958
"Magisterial. . . . A learned, brilliant and enjoyable study."—Géza Vermès, Times Literary Supplement

In this exciting book, Paula Fredriksen explains the variety of New Testament images of Jesus by exploring the ways that the new Christian communities interpreted his mission and message in light of the delay of the Kingdom he had preached. This edition includes an introduction reviews the most recent scholarship on Jesus and its implications for both history and theology.

"Brilliant and lucidly written, full of original and fascinating insights."—Reginald H. Fuller, Journal of the American Academy of Religion

"This is a first-rate work of a first-rate historian."—James D. Tabor, Journal of Religion

"Fredriksen confronts her documents—principally the writings of the New Testament—as an archaeologist would an especially rich complex site. With great care she distinguishes the literary images from historical fact. As she does so, she explains the images of Jesus in terms of the strategies and purposes of the writers Paul, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John."—Thomas D’Evelyn, Christian Science Monitor]]>

This is what redaction criticism gets you: not the author's take of a historical event but a take on how the author's church or audience retrojected its apology for its own theology. So we are not really reading history (not much anyway), but we get an insight into the church a generation or two after the church began. Paula doesn't like the word "church" because she sees it as a historical anachronism. She prefers simply "community" or something similar.

A newer book, From Jesus to Christ, picks up on these same themes and expands on them to explain how Paul wrested the Jesus movement away from the exclusively early Jesus movement and turned it into a Gentile, anti-Jewish movement. She can do this by maintaining those three presuppositions mentioned earlier and some selective Bible verse picking and some arguments from silence she throws in for good measure.

I'm not saying From Jesus to Christ is totally worthless because there are some good insights into early Jewish Christianity and the soil from which it sprang, i.e., second temple Judaism and its multi-cultural world of Greek and pagan thought. There are some really good observations along the way. I just don't buy the whole package. Looking forward to reading her work on Paul: The Pagan Apostle.]]>

review:
At the annual SBL convention recently I spoke with Dr. Carl Holladay (former Professor of New Testament at Emory) after his critique of Paula's book, When Christians were Jews: The First Generation. I commented something along the lines of "the long shadow of F. C. Baur." He said that Paula's theology was a combination of Baur, Hans Conzelmann and Bart Ehrman. It makes perfect sense. If you can start with a presupposition of Baur's Paul/Peter opposition, add a good dose of gospel redaction criticism and then Ehrman's apocalyptic Jesus, then you have a recipe for Paula's understanding of the early Christian movement. Trouble is, that same recipe can cook up other interpretations, equally tasty. One soup is as good as another. It's just a matter of personal taste.

This is what redaction criticism gets you: not the author's take of a historical event but a take on how the author's church or audience retrojected its apology for its own theology. A fascinating conspiracy theory mixed with both highly speculative interpretations of scripture and solid historical and archaeological information. His theories of two-messiahs (Davidic and Priestly), Jesus being fathered by a Roman soldier named Pantera (Panthera), Jesus never intended to start a "church", his brothers were intended to begin a Messiah dynasty - I could go on - will keep your mind reeling.

But, amidst all this fanciful speculation, there is some good material for understanding Jesus' relationship to John the Baptist, Jesus' family dynamics, the role of James in the early church and interesting archaeological sites in the mix. You can take away good and thought-provoking insights.

This work demonstrates that the great ideas are always pertinent to each generation - even in the late classical/early Medieval age in which it was written. It reminds me of the book of Job in that it deals with the problem of evil (theodicy). Boethius (Job) questions Philosophy (God)and demands answers to the thorny issues of the problem of evil and determinism and free will. The questions are eloquently expressed by Boethius and the answers may satisfy some, but not others. The first few books are extremely moving in their passion. As the book progresses the dialogue gets more tedious and technical but if you hang with it till the end you will have gained a greater appreciation of these timeless questions.

<![CDATA[When Christians Were Jews: The First Generation]]> 39096921 A compelling account of Christianity’s Jewish beginnings, from one of the world’s leading scholars of ancient religion

How did a group of charismatic, apocalyptic Jewish missionaries, working to prepare their world for the impending realization of God’s promises to Israel, end up inaugurating a movement that would grow into the gentile church? Committed to Jesus’s prophecy “The Kingdom of God is at hand!”—they were, in their own eyes, history’s last generation. But in history’s eyes, they became the first Christians.

In this electrifying social and intellectual history, Paula Fredriksen answers this question by reconstructing the life of the earliest Jerusalem community. As her account arcs from this group’s hopeful celebration of Passover with Jesus, through their bitter controversies that fragmented the movement’s midcentury missions, to the city’s fiery end in the Roman destruction of Jerusalem, she brings this vibrant apostolic community to life. Fredriksen offers a vivid portrait both of this temple‑centered messianic movementĚýand of the bedrock convictions that animated and sustained it.]]>

<![CDATA[Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible & Why We Don't Know About Them]]> 6101996 New York Times bestseller Misquoting Jesus left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches—and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed:
•The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works
•The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later
•Jesus, Paul, Matthew and John all represented fundamentally different religions
•Established Christian doctrines—such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus and the trinity—were the inventions of still later theologians
These aren't idiosyncratic perspectives of just one scholar. They've been the standard widespread views of scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things? This is the book that pastors, educators and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for—a compelling account of the central challenges faced when attempting to reconstruct Jesus' life and message.]]>
