Unflattening is an insurrection against the fixed viewpoint. This was my first serious philosophy book and I was quite pleased. Shelly forced me to think in ways I hadn't before, and was rigorous without being overly pedantic. With Death, he strikes a good balance. This also made me question my belief that immortality is always good. Any book that can make me question deep beliefs is a good book.

As usual, Bradbury does a wonderful job using spare language to evoke a rich world populated by interesting and sometimes neurotic people. This is a collection of short stories revolving around the colonization of mars, but not like what you'd expect. He used mars as a device to delve into human desires and faults.

I liked the first few stories the best. I felt that the last third of the book was the weakest.

This was another great book in the Elements on Fiction Writing series. It has considerable breadth, and could arguably stand alone as a good primer on fiction writing. This is because conflict and suspense are at the core of good fiction: you'll fail if your story doesn't make the reader want to turn the page.

I really enjoyed Bell's "questions to ask" about your scene at the end of each section. If you collate all these together, it's a good list of tools to heighten the conflict and interest in your scenes.

For example, good sf writers understand how space travel tech changes society. A society with FTL vs. slow going multi-generational ships can dramatically change how your story is told.
