Technology is our new life partner. No longer confined to the sidelines, new interactive technologies like AI therapists, avatar friends, and robot assistants are ready to transform technology's role from basic tools of convenience to intimate elements of our social and emotional lives. This turn towards human-like technology signals the beginning of a new epoch in human history, a change already facing both excitement and resistance.

While many are still wary of human-technology companionship, Relationships 5.0 reveals that these novel interactions aren't as risky as we'd once thought, but can instead make our social and emotional lives richer and more diverse. Still, we must What will the age of Relationships 5.0 look like? How should we prepare for such an age? Who might already be ready to embrace these changes, and why?

Guiding readers away from fear and toward a new reality, Relationships 5.0 exposes the fundamental questions behind such essentials as companionship, trust, and love---and offers fascinating and revealing ideas about what the coming years will look like.]]>

<![CDATA[The Dandy: A People's History of Sartorial Splendour]]> 220298473

The historical figure of the dandy has commonly been described as an upper-class gentleman, often exemplified by well-known men such as Beau Brummell, Charles Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, and Max Beerbohm. But there is a broader history to be told about the dandy - one that incorporates unknown men from the lower strata of society.

The A People's History constitutes the first ever history of those dandies who emanated from the less privileged layers of the populace - the lowly clerks, shop assistants, domestic servants, and labourers who increasingly during the modern age have emerged as style-conscious men about town. Peter Andersson shows that dandyism is far from just an elite phenomenon represented by famous poets and artists. He shows how dandyism as a popular youth subculture grew into an influential cultural movement, from the days of Beau Brummell in the early 19th century to the age of mods in the 1960s.

A series of fascinating in-depth studies of the wide variety of dandy subcultures that have surfaced around the world in the last two centuries tell the story of how the shaping of fashions and the image of men became increasingly democratized, with the arbiters of taste increasingly coming from the other end of the social spectrum. Along the way, we encounter such long-forgotten groups as the mashers, the knuts, the Paris gandins and the Berlin transgender dandies, alongside more well-known but unexplored figures like the zoot suiter, the teddy boy, and the New Romantic.

Above all, this is a story of how fundamental aspects of modern culture such as fashion, style, and conduct have been shaped from below just as much as from above. It is a story that shows how the problematic business of young men trying to find an identity is an enduring phenomenon - and one sadly often accompanied by innocent victims along the way.]]>

<![CDATA[Freedom: A Disease Without Cure]]> 145006032
The concept of freedom is deceptively simple. We think we understand it, but the moment we try and define it we encounter contradictions. In this new philosophical exploration, Slavoj 沤i啪ek argues that the experience of true, radical freedom is transient and fragile. Countering the idea of libertarian individualism, 沤i啪ek draws on philosophers Hegel, Kierkegaard and Heidegger, as well as the work of Kandinsky and Agatha Christie to examine the many facets of freedom and what we can learn from each of them.

Today, with the latest advances in digital control, our social activity can be controlled and regulated to such a degree that the liberal notion of a free individual becomes obsolete and even meaningless. How will we be obliged to reinvent (or limit) the contours of our freedom?

Tracing its connection to everything from capitalism and war to the state and environmental breakdown, 沤i啪ek takes us on an illuminating and entertaining journey that shows how a deeper understanding of freedom can offer hope in dark times.]]>

<![CDATA[Awake!: William Blake and the Power of the Imagination]]> 219583315
Philosopher and psychotherapist Mark Vernon provides a fresh route into Blake, one that takes him at his word. Bringing together Blake鈥檚 poetry, his arresting images and his passionate writings, alongside lively biographical sketches, Vernon shines a new light on this brilliant thinker鈥檚 vivid worldview. Like us, Blake lived in a tumultuous era of warfare, discontent, rapid technological change, and a deepening estrangement of humanity from nature. He exposed the dark sides of political fervour and social moralising, while unashamedly celebrating love and liberty. But he also conversed with prophets and angels, and was powerfully, if unconventionally, religious. If we take this seriously鈥攏ot easy, in secular times鈥攖hen Blake can help us to unlock the transformative power of imagination, key to his importance in today鈥檚 world.

Written both for longstanding Blake-lovers and for those unfamiliar with his work,听Awake!reveals Blake鈥檚 potential as an invigorating and hopeful guide for our modern age]]>

Dogs 45477433
Mark Alizart dispenses with the well-worn clich锟絪 concerning dogs and their masters, seeing them not as submissive pets but rather as unexpected life coaches, ready to teach us the elusive recipes for contentment and joy. Dogs have faced their fate in life with a certain detachment that is not easy to understand. Unlike other animals in a similar situation, they have not become hardened, nor have they let themselves die a little inside. On the contrary, they seem to have softened. This book is devoted to understanding this miracle, the miracle of the joy of dogs - to understanding it and, if at all possible, to learning how it's done.

Weaving elegantly and eruditely between historical myth and pop-culture anecdote, between the peculiar views of philosophers and the even more bizarre findings of science, Alizart offers us a surprising new portrait of the dog as thinker--a thinker who may perhaps know the true secret of our humanity.]]>

<![CDATA[The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals]]> 3109 What should we have for dinner? For omnivore like ourselves, this simple question has always posed a dilemma. When you can eat just about anything nature (or the supermarket) has to offer, deciding what you should eat will inevitably stir anxiety, especially when some of the foods on offer might shorten your life. Today, buffered by one food fad after another, America is suffering from what can only be described as a national eating disorder. The omnivore鈥檚 dilemma has returned with a vengeance, as the cornucopia of the modern American supermarket and fast-food outlet confronts us with a bewildering and treacherous food landscape. What鈥檚 at stake in our eating choices is not only our own and our children鈥檚 health, but the health of the environment that sustains life on earth.
The Omnivore's Dilemma is groundbreaking book, in which one of America鈥檚 most fascinating, original, and elegant writers turns his own omnivorous mind to the seemingly straightforward question of what we should have for dinner. The question has confronted us since man discovered fire, but according to Michael Pollan, the bestselling author of The Botany of Desire, how we answer it today, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, may well determine our very survival as a species. Should we eat a fast-food hamburger? Something organic? Or perhaps something we hunt, gather, or grow ourselves?
To find out, Pollan follows each of the food chains that sustain us鈥攊ndustrial food, organic or alternative food, and food we forage ourselves鈥攆rom the source to a final meal, and in the process develops a definitive account of the American way of eating. His absorbing narrative takes us from Iowa cornfields to food-science laboratories, from feedlots and fast-food restaurants to organic farms and hunting grounds, always emphasizing our dynamic coevolutionary relationship with the handful of plant and animal species we depend on. Each time Pollan sits down to a meal, he deploys his unique blend of personal and investigative journalism to trace the origins of everything consumed, revealing what we unwittingly ingest and explaining how our taste for particular foods and flavors reflects our evolutionary inheritance.
The surprising answers Pollan offers to the simple question posed by this book have profound political, economic, psychological, and even moral implications for all of us. Ultimately, this is a book as much about visionary solutions as it is about problems, and Pollan contends that, when it comes to food, doing the right thing often turns out to be the tastiest thing an eater can do. Beautifully written and thrillingly argued, The Omnivore鈥檚 Dilemma promises to change the way we think about the politics and pleasure of eating. For anyone who reads it, dinner will never again look, or taste, quite the same.]]>

Among the questions What are the internal justifications that esoteric traditions provide for their own existence, especially in the Jewish world, in which the spread of knowledge was of great importance? How do esoteric teachings coexist with the revealed tradition, and what is the relationship between the various esoteric teachings that compete with that revealed tradition?

Halbertal concludes that, through the medium of the concealed, Jewish thinkers integrated into the heart of the Jewish tradition diverse cultural influences such as Aristotelianism, Neoplatonism, and Hermeticisims. And the creation of an added concealed layer, unregulated and open-ended, became the source of the most daring and radical interpretations of the tradition.]]>

<![CDATA[Prophets and Ghosts: The Story of Salvage Anthropology]]> 57155276
In the late nineteenth century, anthropologists, linguists, archaeologists, and other chroniclers began amassing Indigenous cultural objects鈥昪rafts, clothing, images, song recordings鈥昩y the millions. Convinced that Indigenous peoples were doomed to disappear, collectors donated these objects to museums and universities that would preserve and exhibit them. Samuel Redman dives into the archive to understand what the collectors deemed the tradition of the 鈥渧anishing Indian鈥 and what we can learn from the complex legacy of salvage anthropology.

The salvage catalog betrays a vision of Native cultures clouded by racist assumptions鈥昦 vision that had lasting consequences. The collecting practice became an engine of the American museum and significantly shaped public education and preservation, as well as popular ideas about Indigenous cultures. Prophets and Ghosts teases out the moral challenges inherent in the salvage project. Preservationists successfully maintained an important human inheritance, sometimes through collaboration with Indigenous people, but collectors鈥 methods also included outright theft. The resulting portrait of Indigenous culture reinforced the public鈥檚 confidence in the hierarchies of superiority and inferiority invented by 鈥渟cientific鈥 racism.

Today the same salvaged objects are sources of invaluable knowledge for researchers and museum visitors. But the question of what should be done with such collections is nonetheless urgent. Redman interviews Indigenous artists and curators, who offer fresh perspectives on the history and impact of cultural salvage, pointing to new ideas on how we might contend with a challenging inheritance.]]>

<![CDATA[Civilization: How We All Became American]]> 42618581
鈥淐ivilization鈥 is a hard term to define. But while every society has a distinctive culture, authentic civilizations must offer those they subjugate an attractive way of life. Their imprint outlasts their imperium.

A century ago, Debray argues, there was a European civilisation of which America was an outlying culture; but today the relationship is reversed. 鈥淚n 1900, an American of taste was a European in exile; in 2000, a trendy European is a frustrated American鈥攐r one waiting for a visa.鈥 Characteristic of American civilization are its three overarching fetishes: space, image and happiness. America is a civilisation of space and image, whereas Europe was one of time and writing. And its kitsch infantilism blinds itself to the tragic complexities of human life. A measure of America鈥檚 success is how its 鈥済lobish鈥 jargon has so successfully infiltrated European languages.

For Debray, the dominance of American civilisation is a historical fait accompli, yet he sees a model for Europe in Vienna after its exclusion from the German Reich. For decades to come, Europe still offer a rich cultural seedbed. 鈥淪ome will call it decadence, others liberation. Why not both?鈥漖]>

<![CDATA[Haggadah for Believers and Heretics]]> 230110798
Originally published in 1927 by the Soviet Commissariat for Nationalities, "Haggadah for Believers and Heretics" is a biting political reimagining of the Passover ritual. Moyshe Altshuler, a Jewish Communist organizer, takes the form of the traditional Haggadah and repurposes it as a powerful weapon for revolutionary consciousness, transforming the Exodus story into a lesson on class struggle, socialist internationalism, and the fight against all forms of reaction--including Zionism.

This first-ever English translation, complete with its original Yiddish text, appears at a time when the contradictions of Zionism have reached a breaking point, and as the Palestinian resistance fights for liberation against the Israeli settler-colonial project. In a world where the language of liberation is so often co-opted to justify occupation and apartheid, Altshuler鈥檚 Haggadah stands as a reminder that Jewish radicalism has always been anti-Zionist, always been internationalist, and has always placed its faith in solidarity, not nationalism. With a new introduction by Noah Leininger situating the text in its historical and political context, this edition is essential reading for those seeking to understand the deep historical roots of Jewish resistance to Zionism, and the necessity of a truly internationalist struggle against imperialism today.]]>

<![CDATA[What Is Free Speech?: The History of a Dangerous Idea]]> 217286383 'Eye-opening, thought-provoking and deeply enjoyable, What is Free Speech? is a work of great profundity and brilliance鈥 William Dalrymple

A fresh and exciting approach to one of the most controversial subjects of our time

鈥楩ree Speech!鈥 is a clarion call all over the world, yet what it means today is more contested than ever. Many cultures regard it as in China, India, and across the Islamic world, unorthodox views about politics, sex, and religion are repressed and people are often punished for expressing them. Even in the western world, where it is held up as a core value, there is widespread discord and disagreement about what freedom of expression means. Amidst perennial imbalances of power, continually evolving cultural taboos, dramatic new technologies and a fast-changing global media landscape, where free speech comes from 鈥 and how we might think about it 鈥 are critical questions.

Through the lens of history, What Is Free Speech? shows us that freedom of speech is not an absolute from which societies and regimes have drifted or dissented at different times, but something more complicated and interesting.

Our modern conceptions of press and speech liberty, Dabhoiwala shows, were invented in Britain around 1700. The real history of freedom of expression is a story of countless fascinating men and women whose lives have shaped its principles and practices over the past 300 years 鈥 slaves and imperialists, poets and philosophers, plutocrats and revolutionaries. Ranging across Europe, North America and South Asia, and not neglecting other parts of the world, Dabhoiwala rejects celebratory platitudes about the past and present of free expression. Instead, his book explains how to think more deeply about free speech as a global as well as a local question 鈥 by tracing how we got into our current predicaments, showing that history complicates our contemporary presumptions, and suggesting fresh possibilities for the future.]]>

<![CDATA[Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor]]> 36137570 Like Dreamers听directly addresses his Palestinian neighbors in this taut and provocative book, empathizing with Palestinian suffering and longing for reconciliation as he explores how the conflict looks through Israeli eyes.

I call you "neighbor" because I don鈥檛 know your name, or anything personal about you. Given our circumstances, "neighbor" might be too casual a word to describe our relationship. We are intruders into each other鈥檚 dream, violators of each other鈥檚 sense of home. We are incarnations of each other鈥檚 worst historical nightmares. Neighbors?

Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor听is one Israeli鈥檚 powerful attempt to reach beyond the wall that separates Israelis and Palestinians and into the hearts of "the enemy." In a series of letters, Yossi Klein Halevi explains what motivated him to leave his native New York in his twenties and move to Israel to participate in the drama of the renewal of a Jewish homeland, which he is committed to see succeed as a morally responsible, democratic state in the Middle East.

This is the first attempt by an Israeli author to directly address his Palestinian neighbors and describe how the conflict appears through Israeli eyes. Halevi untangles the ideological and emotional knot that has defined the conflict for nearly a century. In lyrical, evocative language, he unravels the complex strands of faith, pride, anger and anguish he feels as a Jew living in Israel, using history and personal experience as his guide.

Halevi鈥檚 letters speak not only to his Palestinian neighbor, but to all concerned global citizens, helping us understand the painful choices confronting Israelis and Palestinians that will ultimately help determine the fate of the region.]]>

Woven throughout is Tibon's own expertise as a longtime international correspondent, as well as more than thirty original with residents of his kibbutz, with the Israeli soldiers who helped to wrest it from the hands of Hamas, and with experts on Gaza, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the failed peace process. More than one family's odyssey,听The Gates of Gaza听is the intimate story of a tight-knit community and the broader saga of war, occupation, and hostility between two national movements鈥攁 conflict that has not yet extinguished the enduring hope for peace.]]>

<![CDATA[The World After Gaza: A Short History]]> 217453544 From one of our foremost public intellectuals, an essential reckoning with the war in Gaza that reframes our understanding of the ongoing conflict, its historical roots, and the fractured global response

The postwar global order was in many ways shaped in response to the Holocaust. That event听became the benchmark for atrocity, and, in the Western imagination, the paradigmatic genocide. Its memory orients so much of our thinking, and crucially, forms the basic justification for Israel鈥檚 right first to establish itself and then to defend itself. But in many parts of the world, ravaged by other conflicts and experiences of mass slaughter, the Holocaust鈥檚 singularity is not always taken for granted, even when its hideous atrocity is. Outside of the West, Pankaj Mishra argues, the dominant story of the twentieth century is that of decolonization.听

The World After Gaza takes the current war, and the polarized reaction to it, as the starting point for a broad reevaluation of two competing narratives of the last the Global North鈥檚 triumphant account of victory over totalitarianism and the spread of liberal capitalism, and the Global South鈥檚 hopeful vision of racial equality and freedom from colonial rule. At a moment when the world鈥檚 balance of power is shifting, and the Global North no longer commands ultimate authority, it is critically important that we understand how and why the two halves of the world are failing to talk to each other.听

As old touchstones and landmarks crumble, only a new history with a sharply different emphasis can reorient us to the world and worldviews now emerging into the light. In this concise, powerful, and pointed treatise, Mishra reckons with the fundamental questions posed by our present crisis 鈥 about whether some lives matter more than others, how identity is constructed, and what the role of the nation-state ought to be. The World After Gaza is an indispensable moral guide to our past, present, and future.]]>

<![CDATA[Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal]]> 213702691 Perfect Victims is an urgent affirmation of the Palestinian condition of resistance and refusal鈥昦n ode to the steadfastness of a nation.

Palestine is a microcosm of the on fire, stubborn, fragmented, dignified. While a settler colonial state continues to inflict devastating violence, fundamental truths are deliberately obscured鈥攖he perpetrators are coddled while the victims are blamed and placed on trial.

Why must Palestinians prove their humanity? And what are the implications of such an infuriatingly impossible task? With fearless prose and lyrical precision, Mohammed El-Kurd refuses a life spent in cross-examination. Rather than asking the oppressed to perform a perfect victimhood, El-Kurd asks friends and foes alike to look Palestinians in the eye, forgoing both deference and condemnation.

How we see Palestine reveals how we see each other; how we see everything else. Masterfully combining candid testimony, history, and reportage, Perfect Victims presents a powerfully simple dignity for the Palestinian.]]>

<![CDATA[Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning]]> 214490421 A bold, urgent appeal from the acclaimed columnist and political commentator, addressing one of the most important issues of our time

In Peter Beinart鈥檚 view, one story has long dominated Jewish communal that of persecution and victimhood. It is a story that erases much of the nuance of sacred Jewish tradition and history, and also warps our understanding of modern history. After Gaza, where Jewish texts, history and language have been deployed to justify mass slaughter and starvation, he argues, Jews must tell a new story. After this war, whose horror will echo for generations, they must do nothing less than offer a new answer to the What does it mean to be a Jew?

Beinart imagines an alternate story that would draw on other nations鈥 efforts at moral reconstruction and a different reading of Jewish history. A story in which Jews have the right to equality, not supremacy, and in which Jewish and Palestinian safety is not mutually exclusive but intertwined. One in which we inhabit a world that recognizes the infinite value of all human life, beginning in the Gaza Strip.

Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza is a provocative and fearless argument that will expand and inform one of the defining conversations of our time. It is a book that only Peter Beinart could a passionate yet measured work that brings together his personal experience, his commanding grasp of history, his keen understanding of political and moral nuance, and a clear vision for the future.]]>

<![CDATA[The Woman Who Split the Atom: The Life of Lise Meitner]]> 58667497
As a female Jewish physicist in Berlin during the early twentieth century, Lise Meitner had to fight for an education, a job, and equal treatment in her field.

Meitner made groundbreaking strides in the study of radiation, but when Hitler came to power in Germany, she had to face not only sexism but life-threatening anti-Semitism as well. Nevertheless, she persevered and one day made a discovery that rocked the the splitting of the atom. While her male lab partner was awarded a Nobel Prize for the achievement, the committee refused to credit her.

Suddenly, the race to build the atomic bomb was on--although Meitner, a pacifist, was horrified to be associated with such a weapon. A physicist who never lost her humanity, Meitner wanted only to figure out how the world works.

The Woman Who Split the Atom is a fascinating look at Meitner's fierce passion, integrity, and her lifelong struggle to have her contributions to physics recognized.]]>

<![CDATA[The Necessity of Exile: Essays from a Distance]]> 176028633 A timely, progressive collection of essays on the Jewish relationship to Zionism and exile.

What is exile? What is diaspora? What is Zionism? Jewish identity today has been shaped by prior generations鈥 answers to these questions, and the future of Jewish life will depend on how we respond to them in our own time. In The Necessity of Essays from a Distance, celebrated rabbi and scholar Shaul Magid offers an essential contribution to this intergenerational process, inviting us to rethink our current moment through religious and political resources from the Jewish tradition.

On many levels, Zionism was conceived as an attempt to 鈥渆nd the exile鈥 of the Jewish people, both politically and theologically. In a series of incisive essays, Magid challenges us to consider the price of diminishing or even erasing the exilic character of Jewish life. The Magic Touch 1331119 The Magic Touch explores the mystery and majesty of touch - leading up to, and within the context of marriage - all from a traditional Jewish perspective. Judaism embraces a holistic approach to physical intimacy and the marriage relationship, viewing the whole person body and soul while recognizing the essential differences between a man and woman s nature.
Here is a book that is upbeat, personal, entertaining and insightful, written with candor and humor, yet designed for men and women seeking clarity over confusion, motivation, meaning, and a spiritual dimension to their relationship.
The Magic Touch discusses the power of restraint, and how sexual self-control is the best form of marriage preparation, giving single adults the best chance to find true love.
In a culture that is all too often superficial, cynical, vulgar, and demeaning when it comes to relationships, this refreshing title taps into age-old wisdom to help you reclaim your individuality, your identity, dignity, self-worth, and sacred worth.

<![CDATA[Forbidden: A 3,000-Year History of Jews and the Pig]]> 210047034 A surprising history of how the pig has influenced Jewish identity. Jews do not eat pig. This (not always true) observation has been made by both Jews and non-Jews for more than three thousand years and is rooted in biblical law. Though the Torah prohibits eating pig meat, it is not singled out more than other food prohibitions. Horses, rabbits, squirrels, and even vultures, while also not kosher, do not inspire the same level of revulsion for Jews as the pig. The pig has become an iconic symbol for people to signal their Jewishness, non-Jewishness, or rebellion from Judaism. There is nothing in the Bible that suggests Jews are meant to embrace this level of pig-phobia. Starting with the Hebrew Bible, Jordan D. Rosenblum historicizes the emergence of the pig as a key symbol of Jewish identity, from the Roman persecution of ancient rabbis, to the Spanish Inquisition, when so-called Marranos (鈥淧igs鈥) converted to Catholicism, to Shakespeare鈥檚 writings, to modern memoirs of those leaving Orthodox Judaism. The pig appears in debates about Jewish emancipation in eighteenth-century England and in vaccine conspiracies; in World War II rallying cries, when many American Jewish soldiers were 鈥渆ating ham for Uncle Sam;鈥 in conversations about pig sandwiches reportedly consumed by Karl Marx; and in recent deliberations about the kosher status of Impossible Pork. All told, there is a rich and varied story about the associations of Jews and pigs over time, both emerging from within Judaism and imposed on Jews by others. Expansive yet accessible, Forbidden offers a captivating look into Jewish history and identity through the lens of the pig.]]> 272 Jordan D. <![CDATA[Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel]]> 21413827 Goliath, New York Times bestselling author Max Blumenthal takes us on a journey through the badlands and high roads of Israel-Palestine, painting a startling portrait of Israeli society under the siege of increasingly authoritarian politics as the occupation of the Palestinians deepens.

Beginning with the national elections carried out during Israel's war on Gaza in 2008-09, which brought into power the country's most right-wing government to date, Blumenthal tells the story of Israel in the wake of the collapse of the Oslo peace process.

As Blumenthal reveals, Israel has become a country where right-wing leaders like Avigdor Lieberman and Bibi Netanyahu are sacrificing democracy on the altar of their power politics; where the loyal opposition largely and passively stands aside and watches the organized assault on civil liberties; where state-funded Orthodox rabbis publish books that provide instructions on how and when to kill Gentiles; where half of Jewish youth declare their refusal to sit in a classroom with an Arab; and where mob violence targets Palestinians and African asylum seekers scapegoated by leading government officials as "demographic threats."

Immersing himself like few other journalists inside the world of hardline political leaders and movements, Blumenthal interviews the demagogues and divas in their homes, in the Knesset, and in the watering holes where their young acolytes hang out, and speaks with those political leaders behind the organized assault on civil liberties. As his journey deepens, he painstakingly reports on the occupied Palestinians challenging schemes of demographic separation through unarmed protest. He talks at length to the leaders and youth of Palestinian society inside Israel now targeted by security service dragnets and legislation suppressing their speech, and provides in-depth reporting on the small band of Jewish Israeli dissidents who have shaken off a conformist mindset that permeates the media, schools, and the military.

Through his far-ranging travels, Blumenthal illuminates the present by uncovering the ghosts of the past鈥攖he histories of Palestinian neighborhoods and villages now gone and forgotten; how that history has set the stage for the current crisis of Israeli society; and how the Holocaust has been turned into justification for occupation.

A brave and unflinching account of the real facts on the ground, Goliath is an unprecedented and compelling work of journalism.

The Talmud says: 鈥淚f someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.鈥 This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel鈥檚 DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small, sometimes in response to attacks against the Israeli people and sometimes preemptively. In this page-turning, eye-opening book, journalist and military analyst Ronen Bergman offers a riveting inside account of the targeted killing programs鈥攖heir successes, their failures, and the moral and political price exacted on the men and women who approved and carried out the missions.

Bergman has gained the exceedingly rare cooperation of many current and former members of the Israeli government, including Prime Ministers Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, Ariel Sharon, and Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as high-level figures in the country鈥檚 military and intelligence services: the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), the Mossad (the world鈥檚 most feared intelligence agency), Caesarea (a 鈥淢ossad within the Mossad鈥 that carries out attacks on the highest-value targets), and the Shin Bet (an internal security service that implemented the largest targeted assassination campaign ever, in order to stop what had once appeared to be unstoppable: suicide terrorism).

Including never-before-reported, behind-the-curtain accounts of key operations, and based on hundreds of on-the-record interviews and thousands of files to which Bergman has gotten exclusive access over his decades of reporting, Rise and Kill First brings us deep into the heart of Israel鈥檚 most secret activities. Bergman traces, from statehood to the present, the gripping events and thorny ethical questions underlying Israel鈥檚 targeted killing campaign, which has shaped the Israeli nation, the Middle East, and the entire world.]]>

Since Hamas鈥檚 attack on Israel last October 7, the term 鈥渟ettler colonialism鈥 has become a center of political debate in the United States. Many progressives, academics, and student organizations justified the attack on the grounds that Israel is a settler colonial state, meaning that it was created on land taken from an indigenous people, and so can never be legitimate. The phrase was new to most Americans, and leading publications like the New York Times and the Atlantic have published articles explaining what it means. But the concept has been influential in academic and activist circles for years, shaping the way many young people think鈥攏ot just about Israel and Palestine, but about the history of the United States and a host of political issues.

Building on Adam Kirsch鈥檚 October 2023 Wall Street Journal article on the topic, this short book is the first to examine the idea critically for a general readership. By exploring the most important writers, texts, and ideas in the field of settler colonial studies, Kirsch shows that it is really a new political ideology, aimed at delegitimizing not only Israel but also the United States, Canada, and Australia. He examines the sources of its appeal, which are spiritual as much as political, and how it turns indignation at past injustices into a source of new injustices today. As a compact and accessible introduction to one of the crucial political ideas of our moment, the book will speak to readers interested in the Middle East, American history, and today鈥檚 most urgent cultural-political debates.]]>

Surviving Autocracy 50695164 A bestselling, National Book Award-winning journalist's essential guide to understanding, resisting, and recovering from the ravages of our tumultuous times.

In the run-up to the 2016 election, Masha Gessen stood out from other journalists for the ability to convey the ominous significance of Donald Trump's speech and behavior, unprecedented in a national candidate. Within forty-eight hours of his victory, the essay "Autocracy: Rules for Survival" had gone viral, and Gessen's coverage of his norm-smashing presidency became essential reading for a citizenry struggling to wrap their heads around the unimaginable. Thanks to the special perspective that is the legacy of a Soviet childhood and two decades covering the resurgence of totalitarianism in Russia, Gessen has a sixth sense for signs of autocracy--and the unique cross-cultural fluency to delineate its emergence to Americans. This incisive book provides an indispensable overview of the calamitous trajectory of the past few years. Gessen not only highlights the corrosion of the media, the judiciary, and the cultural norms we hoped would save us but also tells us the story of how a short few years have changed us, from a people who saw ourselves as a nation of immigrants to a populace haggling over a border wall, heirs to a degraded sense of truth, meaning, and possibility. Surviving Autocracy is an inventory of ravages but also a beacon to recovery--or to enduring, and resisting, an ongoing assault.]]>

<![CDATA[Remembering Akbar: Inside the Iranian Revolution]]> 29455486 Remembering Akbar weaves together the stories of a group of characters who share a crowded death row cell in Tehran鈥檚 notorious Evin prison. A teeming world is evoked vividly through the relationships, memories, and inner lives of these political prisoners, many of whom were eventually executed.

Told through a series of linked memories by the narrator, Akbar, whose striking candor is infused with a mordant sense of humor, the story takes the reader beyond mere political struggles and revelations, to a vibrant alternative history, written, as it were, by the losers.

The characters whose stories Akbar recounts are brought to life within the mundane rhythms of a bleak institution, in its simple pleasures as well as its frequent horrors, and in the unexpected connections that emerge between the world inside and a past before imprisonment.

Rather than exalting the heroic, or choosing to focus merely on despair or redemption, Remembering Akbar reveals eloquently how life unfolds when death is starkly imminent. It is a deeply moving story of great camaraderie, biting humor, and soulful remembrance.]]>

<![CDATA[My Mother's Secret: A Novel of the Jewish Autonomous Region]]> 61770319 With his dying breath, Lena's father asks his family a cryptic question: "You couldn't tell, could you?" After his passing, Lena stumbles upon the answer that changes her life forever.

As her revolutionary neighbor mysteriously disappears during Josef Stalin's Great Terror purges, 18-year-old Regina suspects that she's the Kremlin's next target. Under cover of the night, she flees from her parents' communal apartment in 1930s Moscow to the 20th century's first Jewish state, Birobidzhan, on the border between Russia and China. Once there, Regina has to grapple with her preconceived notions of socialism and Judaism while asking herself the eternal question: What do we owe each other? How can we best help one another? While she contends with these queries and struggles to help Birobidzhan establish itself, love and war are on the horizon.

New York Times Bestselling author Alina Adams draws on her own experiences as a Jewish refugee from Odessa, USSR as she provides readers a rare glimpse into the world's first Jewish Autonomous Region. My Mother's Secret is rooted in detailed research about a little known chapter of Soviet and Jewish history while exploring universal themes of identity, love, loss, war, and parenthood. Readers can expect a whirlwind journey as Regina finds herself and her courage within one of the century's most tumultuous eras.

Now, Zeinab Badawi guides us through Africa's spectacular history, from the origins of humanity, through ancient civilisations and medieval empires with powerful queens and kings, to the miseries of conquest and the elation of independence.

Seeking out occluded histories from across the continent, meeting with countless historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and local storytellers, and travelling through more than thirty countries, Badawi weaves together a fascinating new account of an epic, sweeping history of the oldest inhabited continent on the planet, told through the voices of Africans themselves.]]>

<![CDATA[Rare Tongues: The Secret Stories of Hidden Languages]]> 218234916 Rare Tongues are the most eccentric... extremely interesting.' - The Scotsman

'Any book such as this ... is to be welcomed with sobbing gratitude.' - The Spectator

An enthralling tour around the rarest languages in the world.

From the whistling languages of La Gomera in the Canary Islands and the Hmong people in East and Southeast Asia, to the wars and clashes in Sri Lanka and the conservation efforts in Hawaii and New Zealand, Rare Tongues draws attention to how language and culture are becoming increasingly homogenous, and what we risk losing as a result.

In Rare Tongues, linguist and writer Lorna Gibb explores the history of these languages, the cultures they belong to and the tales they tell. The languages, and the efforts being made to preserve them, offer us a glimpse into what we can learn from each of them, and what they teach us about our planet, about medicine, about indigenous culture and tradition, even the history of all mankind.

At once entertaining and informative, Lorna Gibb makes a compelling case for the preservation of the rich linguistic diversity of our world, and expertly shows why it matters for us all.]]>

Good Girl 195644142
A girl can get in almost anywhere, even if she can鈥檛 get out.

In Berlin鈥檚 artistic underground, where techno and drugs fill warehouses still pockmarked from the wars of the twentieth century, nineteen-year-old Nila at last finds her tribe. Born in Germany to Afghan parents, raised in public housing graffitied with swastikas, drawn to philosophy, photography, and sex, Nila has spent her adolescence disappointing her family while searching for her voice as a young woman and artist.

Then in the haze of Berlin鈥檚 legendary nightlife, Nila meets Marlowe, an American writer whose fading literary celebrity opens her eyes to a life of personal and artistic freedom. But as Nila finds herself pulled further into Marlowe鈥檚 controlling orbit, ugly, barely submerged racial tensions begin to roil Germany鈥攁nd Nila鈥檚 family and community. After a year of running from her future, Nila stops to ask herself the most important question: Who does she want to be?

A story of love and family, raves and Kafka, staying up all night and surviving the mistakes of youth, Good Girl is the virtuosic debut novel by a celebrated young poet and, now, a major new voice in fiction.]]>

B艂臋kitne noce 60145297 Joan Didion rozpoczyna B艂臋kitne noce 26 lipca 2010 roku, w si贸dm膮 rocznic臋 艣lubu jedynej c贸rki Quintany, kt贸ra zmar艂a 26 sierpnia 2005, zaledwie p贸艂tora roku po nag艂ej 艣mierci swojego ojca, Johna Gregory鈥檈go Dunne鈥檃.
Pisarka, wychodz膮c od wspomnie艅 ze 艣lubu c贸rki, wraca do czas贸w jej dzieci艅stwa, przygl膮da si臋 swoim my艣lom, analizuje l臋ki i w膮tpliwo艣ci dotycz膮ce ma艂偶e艅stwa, adopcji i rodzicielstwa, chor贸b i starzenia si臋. The Bonfire of the Vanities 2666 Alternate cover edition of ISBN 9780553381344.

The Bonfire of the Vanities is a 1987 satirical novel by Tom Wolfe. The story is a drama about ambition, racism, social class, politics, and greed in 1980s New York City, and centers on three main characters: WASP bond trader Sherman McCoy, Jewish assistant district attorney Larry Kramer, and British expatriate journalist Peter Fallow.

The novel was originally conceived as a serial in the style of Charles Dickens' writings: It ran in 27 installments in Rolling Stone starting in 1984. Wolfe heavily revised it before it was published in book form. The novel was a bestseller and a phenomenal success, even in comparison with Wolfe's other books. It has often been called the quintessential novel of the 1980s.]]>

<![CDATA[The Need for Roots: Prelude to a Declaration of Duties towards Mankind]]> 141420 The Need for Roots was the direct result. In it she seized the opportunity to denounce the false values of contemporary civilisation. In the cult of materials she witnessed a devastating loss of spirit and consequently of human values. To counteract this she sets out a radical vision for spiritual and political renewal with a passion for truth which sweeps through these pages. The book has become a lasting spiritual testament for our age, where we are confronted, as T.S. Eliot comments, by a 'genius akin to that of the saints'.]]> 320 Simone Weil 0415271029 Marcin 0 to-read 4.07 1949 The Need for Roots: Prelude to a Declaration of Duties towards Mankind

<![CDATA[Equality: What It Means and Why It Matters]]> 217812221
What can be done at a time of deep political instability and environmental crisis? Piketty and Sandel agree on much: more inclusive investment in health and education, higher progressive taxation, curbing the political power of the rich and the overreach of markets. But how far and how fast can we push? Should we prioritize material or social change? What are the prospects for any change at all with nationalist forces resurgent? How should the left relate to values like patriotism and local solidarity where they collide with the challenges of mass migration and global climate change?

To see Piketty and Sandel grapple with these and other problems is to glimpse new possibilities for change and justice but also the stubborn truth that progress towards greater equality never comes quickly or without deep social conflict and political struggle.]]>

My Name Is Barbra 105584138
Barbra Streisand is by any account a living legend, a woman who in a career spanning six decades has excelled in every area of entertainment. She is among the handful of EGOT winners (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) and has one of the greatest and most recognizable voices in popular music. She has been nominated for a Grammy 46 times, and with Yentl she became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major motion picture. In My Name Is Barbra, she tells her own story about her life and extraordinary career, from growing up in Brooklyn to her first star-making appearances in New York nightclubs to her breakout performance in Funny Girl (musical and film) to the long string of successes in every medium in the years that followed. The book is, like Barbra herself, frank, funny, opinionated, and charming. She recounts her early struggles to become an actress, eventually turning to singing to earn a living; the recording of some of her acclaimed albums; the years of effort involved in making Yentl; her direction of The Prince of Tides; her friendships with figures ranging from Marlon Brando to Madeleine Albright; her political advocacy; and the fulfillment she鈥檚 found in her marriage to James Brolin.

No entertainer鈥檚 memoir has been more anticipated than Barbra Streisand鈥檚, and this engrossing and delightful book will be eagerly welcomed by her millions of fans.

Barbra Streisand is an American singer, actress, director and producer and one of the most iconic figures in music and film, the only recording artist in history to have earned #1 albums over six consecutive decades. She has received the American Film Institute鈥檚 Lifetime Achievement Award, the Kennedy Center Honor, the National Medal of Arts, France鈥檚 L茅gion d鈥橦onneur, and America鈥檚 highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She founded The Barbra Streisand Women鈥檚 Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai, helping to raise awareness and push for more research into women鈥檚 heart disease, the leading cause of death among women. Through the Streisand Foundation, which she established in 1986, she has supported national organizations working on preservation of the environment, voter education, the protection of civil liberties and civil rights, women鈥檚 issues, and nuclear disarmament. In 2021 she launched the Barbra Streisand Institute at UCLA, a forward-thinking institution dedicated to finding solutions to the most vital social issues.]]>

The Life of Herod the Great 212364050 Zora Neale Hurston's unpublished novel revealing the historical Herod the Great鈥攏ot the demon the Bible makes him out to be but a religious and philosophical man who lived a life of adventure.

In the 1950s, after the publication of Moses, Man of the Mountain, Zora Neale Hurston set out to write a novel that would set the record straight about one of history's most maligned figures. If Hurston's Moses challenges the Old Testament version of the ancient Hebrew leader by suggesting that Moses was actually an Egyptian, Hurston's Herod challenges the New Testament version of the tyrant who supposedly ordered the deaths of many children in order to save the Christ-child, as recorded in the book of Matthew, by suggesting that he was actually a forerunner of Christ.

From the peaks of triumph to the depths of human misery, the historical Herod "seemed to have been singled out by some deity and especially endowed to attract the zigzag lightning of fate." The intimate friend of both Marc Antony and Julius Caesar, Herod lived in times of war and expansion, where political assassinations and bribery were commonplace as the old world gave way to the new. Breaking his legacy out of a single paragraph in the Bible and into the vivid, breathing world he lived in, Hurston's unfinished manuscript brings a full person with an adventurous life into view for the first time.

Scholar and literary critic Deborah Plant brings this bold, spirited novel to readers for the first time with a new introduction and editorial additions that demonstrate Hurston's point about how reimagining figures from the past addresses the troubles we experience today.]]>

Originally drawn to Yaqui Indian spiritual leader don Juan Matus for his knowledge of mind-altering plants, bestselling author Carlos Castaneda immersed himself in the sorcerer鈥檚 magical world entirely. Trzecia ksi膮偶ka ameryka艅skiego antropologa, kt贸ra zreszt膮 by艂a jego prac膮 doktorsk膮 na Uniwersytecie Kalifornijskim, ma by膰 zapisem do艣wiadczonego przez niego procesu szama艅skiej inicjacji pod czujnym okiem Indianina z plemienia Yaqui, don Juana Matusa. 艢ledzimy 艣cie偶k臋 powolnego przeistaczania si臋 narratora ze zwyczajnego cz艂owieka w "my艣liwego", "wojownika" i wreszcie w "wiedz膮cego" ("czarownika"). W pewnym momencie kluczow膮 staje si臋 praktyka "zatrzymania 艣wiata", kt贸rej realizacja kompletnie zmienia pozycj臋 cz艂owieka w uk艂adzie wszystkich rzeczy, obiekt贸w o偶ywionych lub nieo偶ywionych i odwraca wszystkie znane relacje. Jeden z moich ulubionych cytat贸w z ksi膮偶ki jest w艂a艣nie zwi膮zany z tym do艣wiadczeniem, a bardziej z tym, co ono implikuje:

"Kiedy 艣wiat jest do g贸ry nogami, wtedy my jeste艣my we w艂a艣ciwej pozycji, ale kiedy 艣wiat jest we w艂a艣ciwej pozycji, wtedy my jeste艣my do g贸ry nogami. Teraz, kiedy i my, i 艣wiat jeste艣my we w艂a艣ciwej pozycji, my艣limy, 偶e jeste艣my do g贸ry nogami..."

Wreszcie, jest zapisem wyj膮tkowej relacji nauczyciel-ucze艅, kt贸rej wi臋kszo艣膰 ludzi jest pozbawiona we wsp贸艂czesnym, zindywidualizowanym 艣wiecie.

Wydaje mi si臋, 偶e wr贸c臋 do tej ksi膮偶ki nie jeden raz i w nieco kr贸tszych odst臋pach czasu.
