The Son 19101283 Sonny Lofthus is a strangely charismatic and complacent young man. Sonny's been in prison for a dozen years, nearly half his life. The inmates who seek out his uncanny abilities to soothe leave his cell feeling absolved. They don t know or care that Sonny has a serious heroin habit or where or how he gets his uninterrupted supply of the drug. Or that he's serving time for other peoples crimes.
Sonny took the first steps toward addiction when his father took his own life rather than face exposure as a corrupt cop. Now Sonny is the seemingly malleable center of a whole infrastructure of corruption: prison staff, police, lawyers, a desperate priest all of them focused on keeping him high and in jail. And all of them under the thumb of the Twin, Oslo's crime overlord. As long as Sonny gets his dope, he's happy to play the criminal and the prison's in-house savior.
But when he learns a stunning, long-hidden secret concerning his father, he makes a brilliantly executed escape from prison and from the person he d let himself become and begins hunting down those responsible for the crimes against him . . . The darkly looming question is: Who will get to him first the criminals or the cops?]]>

For generations, the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt - was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artefact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has emerged to build a massive structure outside the orbit of Uranus: a gate that leads into a starless dark.

Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artefact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.]]>

And teleportation has become the ideal mode of transportation, offered exclusively by International Transport—a secretive firm headquartered in New York City. Their Departure... Arrival... Delight! Joel Byram, our smartass protagonist, is an everyday twenty-fifth century guy. He spends his days training artificial-intelligence engines to act more human, jamming out to 1980’s new wave—an extremely obscure genre, and trying to salvage his deteriorating marriage. Joel is pretty much an everyday guy with everyday problems—until he’s accidentally duplicated while teleporting. In the afterwords, the author mentions how important it was to them to get the science right, as he wants this to be considered "hard sci-fi".

While I think he did a pretty good job of that, and the book is filled with a lot of interesting ideas, I found myself wishing he'd focused more on good storytelling.

The protagonists were motivated by a "damsel in distress" trope that lasted about three fourths of the book. The motivations of the villains were unconvincing and at times confusing, and it often felt like there was no world going on outside the little bubble of the story.

Tons and tons of exposition and footnotes made the story amble along in the early parts, and took attention away from getting to know the characters themselves, which end up feeling flat all-around.

If you like a good "what if" speculation, this book is interesting in many ways. It's well worth picking up for musings on identity in an age where anything can be replicated, or if you want to get ideas for how to retain a career where most things are automated.

But if you're looking for an entertaining sci-fi story, I would look elsewhere. ]]>

<![CDATA[Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies]]> 1842
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a national bestseller: the global account of the rise of civilization that is also a stunning refutation of ideas of human development based on race.

In this "artful, informative, and delightful" (William H. McNeill, New York Review of Books) book, Jared Diamond convincingly argues that geographical and environmental factors shaped the modern world. Societies that had a head start in food production advanced beyond the hunter-gatherer stage, and then developed writing, technology, government, and organized religion—as well as nasty germs and potent weapons of war—and adventured on sea and land to conquer and decimate preliterate cultures. A major advance in our understanding of human societies, Guns, Germs, and Steel chronicles the way that the modern world came to be and stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science, the Rhone-Poulenc Prize, and the Commonwealth Club of California's Gold Medal]]>

<![CDATA[Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals]]> 5095463

Scientists have long counseled against interpreting animal behavior in terms of human emotions, warning that such anthropomorphizing limits our ability to understand animals as they really are. Yet what are we to make of a female gorilla in a German zoo who spent days mourning the death of her baby? Or a wild female elephant who cared for a younger one after she was injured by a rambunctious teenage male? Or a rat who refused to push a lever for food when he saw that doing so caused another rat to be shocked? Aren’t these clear signs that animals have recognizable emotions and moral intelligence? With Wild Justice Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce unequivocally answer yes.

Marrying years of behavioral and cognitive research with compelling and moving anecdotes, Bekoff and Pierce reveal that animals exhibit a broad repertoire of moral behaviors, including fairness, empathy, trust, and reciprocity. Underlying these behaviors is a complex and nuanced range of emotions, backed by a high degree of intelligence and surprising behavioral flexibility. Animals, in short, are incredibly adept social beings, relying on rules of conduct to navigate intricate social networks that are essential to their survival. Ultimately, Bekoff and Pierce draw the astonishing conclusion that there is no moral gap between humans and other species: morality is an evolved trait that we unquestionably share with other social mammals.

Sure to be controversial, Wild Justice offers not just cutting-edge science, but a provocative call to rethink our relationship with—and our responsibilities toward—our fellow animals.

<![CDATA[The Age of Em: Work, Love and Life When Robots Rule the Earth]]> 26831944 Many think the first truly smart robots will be brain emulations or "ems." Scan a human brain, then run a model with the same connections on a fast computer, and you have a robot brain, but recognizably human.
Train an em to do some job and copy it a million times: an army of workers is at your disposal. When they can be made cheaply, within perhaps a century, ems will displace humans in most jobs. In this new economic era, the world economy may double in size every few weeks.
Some say we can't know the future, especially following such a disruptive new technology, but Professor Robin Hanson sets out to prove them wrong. Applying decades of expertise in physics, computer science, and economics, he uses standard theories to paint a detailed picture of a world dominated by ems.
While human lives don't change greatly in the em era, em lives are as different from ours as our lives are from those of our farmer and forager ancestors. Ems make us question common assumptions of moral progress, because they reject many of the values we hold dear.
Read about em mind speeds, body sizes, job training and career paths, energy use and cooling infrastructure, virtual reality, aging and retirement, death and immortality, security, wealth inequality, religion, teleportation, identity, cities, politics, law, war, status, friendship and love.
This book shows you just how strange your descendants may be, though ems are no stranger than we would appear to our ancestors. To most ems, it seems good to be an em.

Blood, Sweat, and Pixels 34376766 Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, Jason Schreier takes readers on a fascinating odyssey behind the scenes of video game development, where the creator may be a team of 600 overworked underdogs or a solitary geek genius. Exploring the artistic challenges, technical impossibilities, marketplace demands, and Donkey Kong-sized monkey wrenches thrown into the works by corporate, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels reveals how bringing any game to completion is more than Sisyphean—it's nothing short of miraculous.

Taking some of the most popular, bestselling recent games, Schreier immerses readers in the hellfire of the development process, whether it's RPG studio Bioware's challenge to beat an impossible schedule and overcome countless technical nightmares to build Dragon Inquisition; indie developer Eric Barone's single-handed efforts to grow country-life RPG Stardew Valley from one man's vision into a multi-million-dollar franchise; or Bungie spinning out from their corporate overlords at Microsoft to create Destiny, a brand new universe that they hoped would become as iconic as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings—even as it nearly ripped their studio apart.

Documenting the round-the-clock crunches, buggy-eyed burnout, and last-minute saves, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels is a journey through development hell—and ultimately a tribute to the dedicated diehards and unsung heroes who scale mountains of obstacles in their quests to create the best games imaginable.]]>

<![CDATA[Singularity Rising: Surviving and Thriving in a Smarter, Richer, and More Dangerous World]]> 13236178 New York Times bestseller The Singularity is Near, the futurist and entrepreneur describes the Singularity, a likely future utterly different than anything we can imagine. The Singularity is triggered by the tremendous growth of human and computing intelligence that is an almost inevitable outcome of Moore's Law. Since the book's publication, the coming of the Singularity is now eagerly anticipated by many of the leading thinkers in Silicon Valley, from PayPal mastermind Peter Thiel to Google co-founder Larry Page. The formation of the Singularity University, and the huge popularity of the Singularity website kurzweilai.com, speak to the importance of this intellectual movement.

But what about the average person? How will the Singularity affect our daily lives—our jobs, our families, and our wealth?

Singularity Rising: Surviving and Thriving in a Smarter, Richer, and More Dangerous World focuses on the implications of a future society faced with an abundance of human and artificial intelligence. James D. Miller, an economics professor and popular speaker on the Singularity, reveals how natural selection has been increasing human intelligence over the past few thousand years and speculates on how intelligence enhancements will shape civilization over the next forty years.

Miller considers several possible scenarios in this coming singularity:
-A merger of man and machine making society fantastically wealthy and nearly immortal
-Competition with billions of cheap AIs drive human wages to almost nothing while making investors rich
-Businesses rethink investment decisions to take into account an expected future period of intense creative destruction
-Inequality drops worldwide as technologies mitigate the cognitive cost of living in impoverished environments
-Drugs designed to fight Alzheimer's disease and keep soldiers alert on battlefields have the fortunate side effect of increasing all of their users IQs, which, in turn, adds a percentage points to worldwide economic growth

Singularity Rising offers predictions about the economic implications for a future of widely expanding intelligence and practical career and investment advice on flourishing on the way to the Singularity.]]>

<![CDATA[Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1)]]> 51964
The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce-- and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity's resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody knows that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don't want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You'll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You'll serve two years at the front. And if you survive, you'll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.

John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine--and what he will become is far stranger.]]>

Unfortunately this lets the author hide the fact that he has entirely failed to create interesting characters or narrative. Each character is a cipher for a certain ideal or positioning in the author's world and not very human-like. (ironically)

But what I really enjoyed about the book were the ideas about specific paths humanity could go down, the dangers that could lurk there and how to possibly avoid them. I think the book is worth reading just to see those, but be prepared for a bit of a slog to get there. ]]>

Thanks to the gaiafield, a neural entanglement wired into most humans, those dreams are shared by hundreds of millions—and a religion, the Living Dream, is born, with Inigo as its prophet. Countering the various and increasingly desperate agents and factions is Paula Myo, a ruthlessly single-minded investigator, beset by foes from her distant past and colleagues of dubious allegiance...but she is fast losing a race against time.

At the heart of all this is Edeard the Waterwalker, who once lived a long time ago deep inside the Void. He is the messiah of Living Dream, and visions of his life are shared by, and inspire billions of humans. It is his glorious, captivating story that is the driving force behind Living Dream's Pilgrimage, a force that is too strong to be thwarted. Meanwhile, the parallel story of Edeard, the Waterwalker -- as told through a series of addictive dreams communicated to the gaiasphere via Inigo, the First Dreamer -- continues to unfold. But now the inspirational tale of this idealistic young man takes a darker and more troubling turn as he finds himself faced with powerful new enemies -- and temptations more powerful still.

With time running out, a repentant Inigo must decide whether to release Edeard's final dream: a dream whose message is scarcely less dangerous than the pilgrimage promises to be. And Araminta must choose whether to run from her unwanted responsibilities or face them down, with no guarantee of success or survival. But all these choices may be for naught if the monomaniacal Ilanthe, leader of the breakaway Accelerator Faction, is able to enter the Void. For it is not paradise she seeks there, but dominion.

The Dreaming Void (Void #1) 866136 At the very heart of the galaxy is the Void, a self-contained microuniverse that cannot be breached, cannot be destroyed, and cannot be stopped as it steadily expands in all directions, consuming everything in its path: planets, stars, civilizations. The Void has existed for untold millions of years. Even the oldest and most technologically advanced of the galaxy’s sentient races, the Raiel, do not know its origin, its makers, or its purpose.

But then Inigo, an astrophysicist studying the Void, begins dreaming of human beings who live within it. Inigo’s dreams reveal a world in which thoughts become actions and dreams become reality. Inside the Void, Inigo sees paradise. Thanks to the gaiafield, a neural entanglement wired into most humans, Inigo’s dreams are shared by hundreds of millions–and a religion, the Living Dream, is born, with Inigo as its prophet. But then he vanishes.

Suddenly there is a new wave of dreams. Dreams broadcast by an unknown Second Dreamer serve as the inspiration for a massive Pilgrimage into the Void. But there is a chance that by attempting to enter the Void, the pilgrims will trigger a catastrophic expansion, an accelerated devourment phase that will swallow up thousands of worlds.

And thus begins a desperate race to find Inigo and the mysterious Second Dreamer. Some seek to prevent the Pilgrimage; others to speed its progress–while within the Void, a supreme entity has turned its gaze, for the first time, outward...]]>

Nor are the Prime the only threat. For more than a hundred years, a shadowy cult, the Guardians of Selfhood, has warned that an alien with mind-control abilities impossible to detect or resist -- the Starflyer -- has secretly infiltrated the Commonwealth. Branded as terrorists, the Guardians and their leader, Bradley Johansson, have been hunted by relentless investigator Paula Myo. But now evidence suggests that the Guardians were right all along, and that the Starflyer has placed agents in vital posts throughout the Commonwealth -- agents who are now sabotaging the war effort.

Is the Starflyer an ally of the Prime, or has it orchestrated a fight to the death between the two species for its own advantage? <![CDATA[Robots Will Steal Your Job, But That's OK: How to Survive the Economic Collapse and Be Happy]]> 16163740
That is the argument for a phenomenon called technological unemployment, one that is pervading modern society. But is that really the case? Or is it just a futuristic fantasy? What will become of us in the coming years, and what can we do to prevent a catastrophic collapse of society?

Robots Will Steal Your Job, But That's OK: how to survive the economic collapse and be happy explores the impact of technological advances on our lives, what it means to be happy, and provides suggestions on how to avoid a systemic collapse.]]>
208 Federico Pistono Froztwolf 2
While it does tackle current trends in automation, and the concept of technological unemployment, it doesn't project much into the future and doesn't even start to speculate about social changes. It does however tell you how to be less dependent on energy and money in a way that's only tenuously related to the supposed main theme. I guess these things help after an economic collapse, but he goes straight from widespread unemployment to that, without even speculating about how it would take place.

The lack of an editor is quite apparent. The structure of the book is all over the place and never feels like it's developing on a central theme. Federico Pistono must have thought he could pull this off without any professional assistance, but was sadly mistaken.
He would probably chalk it down to eclectic interests, but good writers can tie together any collection of information under a common theme. It's not the diversity I have a problem with, but the lack of connections between the different parts.

Page-by-page the lack of an editor is quite apparent too. Frequent misspellings of the type a spellchecker won't catch, poor section and paragraph structure and bad formatting that leads to half the apostrophes in the book showing up as question marks, all combine to make this book rather annoying to read.

I should also mention the smugness that drips from every page. The author knows all things better than you do, and is giddy at the chance of educating you. Most paragraphs could end with ", you idiot." and it wouldn't change the tone of the book at all.
I'm convinced that if he were to see this review he'd decide that I "didn't get it" and fail to improve on anything for his next book.

There's no redeeming value here. The only part I found interesting was about current trends in automation. But I'm sure there's better books on that subject specifically. If someone knows a good book on the social changes likely to happen as a result of exponential automation and technological unemployment, I'm still looking.]]>

<![CDATA[Trekonomics: The Economics of Star Trek]]> 27040338 Star Trek is set in an amazing utopian universe of faster-than-light travel, of “beam me up, Scotty, and Vulcan salutes. It’s also a universe where war and poverty have been eradicated, money doesn’t exist, and work is indistinguishable from leisure. In this ground-breaking book, timed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek’s first episode, Manu Saadia takes a deep dive into the show’s most radical and provocative aspect: its detailed and consistent economic vision.

Could we create such a utopia here on Earth? And why has Star Trek’s future had such staying power in our cultural imagination? Trekonomics looks at the morals, values, and hard economics that underpin the series ideal society, and its sources of inspiration both inside and outside the science-fiction canon. After reading this book, you’ll be able to answer the question: If you could live in Star Trek’s economic utopia, would you want to?]]>

I got neither.

It turns out that many crucial parts of how the Star Trek economy works is never explained or justified in the canon. Especially when it comes to limited, non-material resources and other things that can't just be replicated. The book ignored this gaping hole in the logic and focused on material resources, jobs and the reputation economy.

And as said by others there's no real discussion of how to get there either.

It might be worth your time if you know a little bit about Star Trek and want to get a better idea about Economics, or vice versa, but don't expect much.

Nanna, the revived wife of Baldur and the new keeper of the Apples of Youth, is missing; creatures and supernatural beings are coming up to the surface; and dark and powerful forces headed by certain survivors are on the rise, threatening the very existence of the world of men. Hödur & Baldur is the first novel in the trilogy The Saga of the Survivors. Archer was normally not funny because of the things he said, or even how he said them, but because of the things he did and how other people reacted to him. Does not translate well into a book written by him.

<![CDATA[Your Brain On Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction]]> 23121356
This led to one of the largest informal experiments in the history of science. Tens of thousands of people have tried abstaining from sexually stimulating material in a process they call ‘rebooting. Many of them reported startling changes, from improved concentration and elevated mood to a greater capacity for real-life intimacy.

Gary Wilson has listened to the stories of those who have tried giving up internet porn and related them to an account of how the reward system of the brain interacts with its environment. And now a growing body of research in neuroscience is confirming what these pioneers have discovered for themselves internet pornography can be seriously addictive and damaging.

In Your Brain on Porn Wilson provides a concise introduction to the phenomenon of internet porn addiction that draws on both first-person accounts and the findings of cognitive neuroscience. In a voice that is generous and humane, he also offers advice for those who want to stop using internet pornography.

The publication of Your Brain on Porn is a landmark in our attempts to understand, and remain balanced in, a world where addiction is big business.]]>

He has studied the research, interviewed people and created a ton of articles, videos and podcasts that he's posts for free on his website. If he's not the father of the "nofap" movement, he's at least the wise, helpful uncle you can turn to when you're too embarrassed with yourself to talk to anyone else.

This book is his masterpiece, where he draws together everything he has learned over the years and presents it in one comprehensive volume.

He starts explaining what the risks of porn consumption can be, often with examples quoted directly from sufferers themselves.

The second section is all about the science. How does pornography addiction work? Is it a real addiction? What does the research say about it? A little dry, and can safely be skimmed if you are more interested in knowing how it affects you than what's happening behind the scenes.

Finally, and most importantly, he tells you what to do about it if your own pornography consumption is out of control. A lot of good advice from the thousands of people he's assisted through this process is posted there.

As an ex porn-addict myself, and the author of my own book on the subject ("Porned Out"), I am familiar with the subject both experientially and academically, and Gary delivers strongly on both aspects here.

I'd recommend this book for everyone: Porn Addicts wondering what is going on with them and how to give it up, their friends and family wondering the same, nofap veterans that want to learn more, and everyone else curious about the effects of porn addiction.

<![CDATA[The Little Book of Contentment: A Guide to Becoming Happy with Life and Who You Are, While Getting Things Done]]> 17982870
It’s been a long journey, but I’ve enjoyed it. I struggled with feeling bad about my body, feeling insecure about myself, doubting my abilities to make it without an employer, doubting myself as a writer, not believing I had discipline or the ability to change my habits.

And all this led to other problems: I sought happiness and pleasure in food, beer, shopping, distraction, TV. I procrastinated, I let my health get bad, I smoked, I was deeply in debt, unhappy with my work, never exercised, and ate lots of junk food.

Not a pretty picture. But if I’d never been in that place, I wouldn’t understand how to get out of it. And so I’m grateful I was there. I’ve learned a lot, about myself and about how to find happiness in who I am, what I have, who I’m with, what I do, and all that’s around me.

And now, I’d like to share that with you.

I’ve written a free book called The Little Book of Contentment: A guide to becoming happy with life & who you are, while getting things done. I share it with you today, in hopes that it will help a few of you, or maybe many, who struggle with being happy with yourselves and your lives. It’s a more common problem than you might imagine, and if I can help just a little, that would be amazing.

I hope you like the book.]]>

A lot of good direction here, but like many other self-development gurus, Babauta commonly finds himself telling people to "be more grateful" and "let go of negative emotions" without giving people concrete steps for how to do so. (you can check out the Sedona Method for those)

The Transhumanist Wager 17728761 #1 BESTSELLER SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY
#1 BESTSELLER PHILOSOPHY
"WINNER" Visionary Fiction - International Book Awards

Leading futurist, philosopher, and former National Geographic journalist Zoltan Istvan presents his award-winning, bestselling visionary novel, The Transhumanist Wager, as a seminal statement of our times.

His philosophical thriller has been called "revolutionary," "life-changing," and "a masterpiece" by readers, scholars, and critics. The novel debuts a challenging original philosophy, which rebuffs modern civilization by inviting the end of the human species—and declaring the onset of something greater.

Set in the present day, the novel tells the story of transhumanist Jethro Knights and his unwavering quest for immortality via science and technology. Fighting against him are fanatical religious groups, economically depressed governments, and mystic Zoe Bach: a dazzling trauma surgeon and the love of his life, whose belief in spirituality and the afterlife is absolute. Exiled from America and reeling from personal tragedy, Knights forges a new nation of willing scientists on the world's largest seastead, Transhumania. When the world declares war against the floating libertarian city, demanding an end to its renegade and godless transhuman experiments and ambitions, Knights strikes back, leaving the planet forever changed.]]>

I had hoped to come out of this with a better understanding of what the risks and opportunities are with taking a strong transhuman approach, but the author presents no downsides.

The transhuman world Jethro Knights erects is a wet dream for American liberals. This world is being presented as a utopia worth demolishing all the world's individual cultures and historical artifacts for. But personally I wouldn't want to live there. And the arrogant confidence with which it's presented is offputting.

If you've read first novels written by journalists before, the lapses in good storytelling technique shouldn't be too jarring or disrupting. The backgrounds and personalities of the non-strawman characters are convincingly crafted and really help give color to the story.

Despite that, it gives an excellent insight into the different fields you must take care of while blogging and the interview are mostly interesting, though they start to get same-y after a while, all being interviews with the same type of blogger.

Would have happily given an extra star if it were a book that worked better for tech bloggers, financial bloggers, exercise bloggers, etc.

Would have given another extra star if it were more than a surface-level introduction to tools and techniques. The title indicates that it teaches you things such as how to build communities, but in reality it does tells you that things such as Twitter exist and that with consistent use you can use it to help build a community.

Would recommend only to people who are completely new to blogging and internet use and want to set up a blog about arts or crafts. ]]>

The world building is immaculate here. He puts you square in the Bangkok of this world and weaves backstory, story and character background masterfully into one solid narrative.

Character work is the only fault I can find in Bacigalupi's writing. All his characters are pretty one-dimensional and single-purpose, even when that purpose is a plot twist. Each character's personality could be summed up in a single sentence: Anderson is the hardened business man that falls in love with an unlikely woman. Hong Sek is the refugee that will do anything to survive...

With more character depth I would have had no compunctions about giving this book five stars.

While not based on a future vision that is likely to come to pass, it's a fantastic "what if" book. It completely ignores the possibilities of using energy sources other than carbon fuels, and predicts a bleak contraction when the carbons run out. The Count of Monte Cristo 7126 The epic tale of wrongful imprisonment, adventure and revenge, in its definitive translation

Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantès is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to use the treasure to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.

Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) 13453029
The first Wool story was released as a standalone short in July of 2011. Due to reviewer demand, the rest of the story was released over the next six months.

This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside.

It starts off well enough, by introducing it's (rather cartoonish) characters at length and showing how the relationships develop between them, but around the half-way point all that goes away and it's just filled with sex scene upon sex scene, interspersed by descriptions of how emotionally conflicted the protagonist is about everything. All semblance of direction, character development or even plot payoff is thrown out the window at this point, never to be seen again.

If you are a straight man, reading for your own enjoyment, stay away from this one. If you (like me) are curious about why it became so popular, well I hope you can speed-read. <![CDATA[Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen]]> 6289283 Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a fifty-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder.

With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.]]>

<![CDATA[The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies?]]> 15766601 The bestselling author of Collapse and Guns, Germs and Steel surveys the history of human societies to answer the question: What can we learn from traditional societies that can make the world a better place for all of us?

Most of us take for granted the features of our modern society, from air travel and telecommunications to literacy and obesity. Yet for nearly all of its six million years of existence, human society had none of these things. While the gulf that divides us from our primitive ancestors may seem unbridgeably wide, we can glimpse much of our former lifestyle in those largely traditional societies still or recently in existence. Societies like those of the New Guinea Highlanders remind us that it was only yesterday—in evolutionary time—when everything changed and that we moderns still possess bodies and social practices often better adapted to traditional than to modern conditions. The World Until Yesterday provides a mesmerizing firsthand picture of the human past as it had been for millions of years—a past that has mostly vanished—and considers what the differences between that past and our present mean for our lives today.

This is Jared Diamond’s most personal book to date, as he draws extensively from his decades of field work in the Pacific islands, as well as evidence from Inuit, Amazonian Indians, Kalahari San people, and others. Diamond doesn’t romanticize traditional societies—after all, we are shocked by some of their practices—but he finds that their solutions to universal human problems such as child rearing, elder care, dispute resolution, risk, and physical fitness have much to teach us. Provocative, enlightening, and entertaining, The World Until Yesterday is an essential and fascinating read.

This deeply undermined my confidence in everything the author said thereafter.

<![CDATA[A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5)]]> 10664113 Alternate cover edition of ASIN B004XISI4A

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance—beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has thousands of enemies, and many have set out to find her. As they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

Fleeing from Westeros with a price on his head, Tyrion Lannister, too, is making his way to Daenerys. But his newest allies in this quest are not the rag-tag band they seem, and at their heart lies one who could undo Daenerys’s claim to Westeros forever.

Meanwhile, to the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone—a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

From all corners, bitter conflicts reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.]]>

It is conventional wisdom that there is one true path in life for each of us. But what about those with a wide array of interests, a dynamic curiosity about the world, and an ever-renewing wellspring of passions? Margaret Lobenstine calls these people “Renaissance Souls, and in this groundbreaking book, she offers a life-planning strategy in tune with their dynamic, change-loving personalities. Renaissance Souls often get stuck, moving from entry-level job to entry-level job, degree to degree, or hobby to hobby, unwilling to settle on just one thing to do “for the rest of my life. Or, after achieving success in one field, they yearn for new challenges and begin looking around for something different. Yet they are also afraid that if they pursue their changing interests, they will have to give up on financial security, becoming “a jack of all trades and master of none.

The Renaissance Soul , the first book devoted to this personality type, not only shows that it’s possible to design a successful, vibrant life built on multiple passions, but also gives readers the practical advice to do so. Lobenstine arms the reader with powerful life-design strategies, including how

*Transform your day job so that it carries your dreams forward

*Manage your time the Renaissance Soul way

*Thrive on many interests without feeling scattered

The Science of Getting Rich 342504 As featured in the bestselling book The Secret, here is the landmark guide to wealth creation republished with the classic essay “How to Get What You Want. Wallace D. Wattles spent a lifetime considering the laws of success as he found them in the work of the world’s great philosophers. He then turned his life effort into this simple, slender book a volume that he vowed could replace libraries of philosophy, spirituality, and self-help for the purpose of attaining one definite goal: a life of prosperity. Wattles describes a definite science of wealth attraction, built on the foundation of one commanding idea: “There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made…A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. In his seventeen short, straight-to-the-point chapters, Wattles shows how to use this idea, how to overcome barriers to its application, and how work with very direct methods that awaken it in your life. He further explains how creation and not competition is the hidden key to wealth attraction, and how your power to get rich uplifts everyone around you. The Science of Getting Rich concludes with Wattle’s rare essay “How to Get Want You Want a brilliant refresher of his laws of wealth creation. ]]> 146 Wallace D. As a Man Thinketh 81959
Purity of mind leads inevitably to purity of life, to the precious love and understanding that should control our everyday acts and attitudes towards friends and foes.

But where must one look for guidance? How does one achieve purity of mind that alone brings happiness and confidence?

The author offers his clear answers in this book As A Man Thinketh. His words have helped millions for more than a century--and they continue to point the true way to a better life for a troubled humanity.

"Out of a clean heart comes a clean life and a clean body," James Allen writes. "Out of a defiled mind proceeds a defiled life and a corrupt body."

Too many mortals strive to improve only their wordly position--and too few seek spiritual betterment. Such is the problem James Allen faced in his own time. The ideas he found in his inner-most heart after great searching guided him as they will guide you.]]>

1060 George R.R. Martin 055358202X Froztwolf 3 It's getting very slow and heavy at this point. So many groups of characters acting at the same time.

I wish the author's disclaimer that it was too much to include in one book, so the other half of the characters would be doing things concurrently in "Dance with Dragons" would have been in the front of the book and not in the back. I wondered constantly about when I'd start hearing about them.

Some story-arcs feel way longer than they'd need to be, and the books are in dire need of an event to tie some of it together, like the battle of Blackwater Bay did in book two. It feels like the author is just going mad with telling us stories of different parts of the world, whether or not they have anything to do with the larger arc or not.

Would have given a 3 1/2 stars if I could, but doesn't quite deserve 4.
Not bad by any means, but requires a lot of patience, or speed-reading. ]]>

It's getting very slow and heavy at this point.

<![CDATA[How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else]]> 427475
One day as Gill sat in a Manhattan Starbucks with his last affordable luxury—a latté—brooding about his misfortune and quickly dwindling list of options, a 28-year-old Starbucks manager named Crystal Thompson approached him, half joking, to offer him a job. With nothing to lose, he took it, and went from drinking coffee in a Brooks Brothers suit to serving it in a green uniform. For the first time in his life, Gill was a minority--the only older white guy working with a team of young African-Americans. He was forced to acknowledge his ingrained prejudices and admit to himself that, far from being beneath him, his new job was hard. And his younger coworkers, despite having half the education and twice the personal difficulties he’d ever faced, were running circles around him.

The other baristas treated Gill with respect and kindness despite his differences, and he began to feel a new emotion: gratitude. Crossing over the Starbucks bar was the beginning of a dramatic transformation that cracked his world wide open. When all of his defenses and the armor of entitlement had been stripped away, a humbler, happier and gentler man remained. One that everyone, especially Michael’s kids, liked a lot better.

The backdrop to Gill's story is a nearly universal cultural phenomenon: the Starbucks experience. In How Starbucks Saved My Life, we step behind the counter of one of the world's best-known companies and discover how it all really works, who the baristas are and what they love (and hate) about their jobs. Inside Starbucks, as Crystal and Mike’s friendship grows, we see what wonders can happen when we reach out across race, class, and age divisions to help a fellow human being.]]>

Myself, I'm torn between this being written from the group up as an advertisement for Starbucks, to get people to work there, or a guy that really did work there but went a bit too far with the exaggerations. Somehow Starbucks solved all of this man's problems, and helped him be ecstatic about how 3 hour daily commute and wages that hardly fed him.

The main thrust of the story seems to be the old man learning how wrong it was of him to put his work above his kids and everyone else in his life. Yet he seems to do exactly the same thing when he starts working at Starbucks. He doesn't meet most of his kids for almost a year after starting to work there.

If you mean to read this book, pay special attention to the advertising tricks he uses in some chapters. He will tell you about a very nice and emotional moment in his childhood and then connect that with a part of his job at Starbucks, thereby transferring some of your positive emotions onto that. Or he will tell you about something horrible, and then show how a part of his new job is the solution to that.

The only reason I gave it as much as two stars is for technical reasons, it's actually quite well written, the chapters are logical and the text flows quite nicely.

Emotionally manipulative, rather dull, and ultimately void of any content or meaning, avoid this book at any cost. ]]>

The Alphabet of Manliness 116892
If it’s a crime to be awesome, then I deserve three life sentences and the death penalty. This literary kick to the dick may very well be the greatest compilation of all things manly throughout history.

The new edition

•“The Numbers of Manliness.
•A full-color insert
•Corrections to typos!

I, Maddox, the author, personally guarantee that this is the best edition of the book since the last one. This book is only for the saltiest, hairiest, most rugged sons of bitches out there. However, it would be selfish to keep it for myself, so feel free to pick up a copy. This humble tome of wisdom is a tribute to all men who toil away at work every day, getting their balls busted or busting balls alike.

If you can’t handle the punch to the colon I’m about to deliver to you, look on the bright you’ll save a fortune on Halloween when kids come to your door to pick apart your candy ass. On the other hand, if you feel comfortable with the risk of having your ass neatly packaged and handed to you with all the trimmings, cut the foreplay and crack the book open already.]]>

<![CDATA[World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War]]> 8908
Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, "By excluding the human factor, aren't we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn't the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as 'the living dead'?"

Note: Some of the numerical and factual material contained in this edition was previously published under the auspices of the United Nations Postwar Commission.]]>

The Undiscovered Self 67891 One of the world's greatest psychiatrists reveals how to embrace our own humanity and resist the pressures of an ever-changing world.

In this challenging and provocative work, Dr. Carl Jung—one of history's greatest minds—argues that civilization's future depends on our ability as individuals to resist the collective forces of society. Only by gaining an awareness and understanding of one's unconscious mind and true, inner nature"the undiscovered self"—can we as individuals acquire the self-knowledge that is antithetical to ideological fanaticism. But this requires that we face our fear of the duality of the human psyche—the existence of good and the capacity for evil in every individual.

In this seminal book, Jung compellingly argues that only then can we begin to cope with the dangers posed by mass society"the sum total of individuals"—and resist the potential threats posed by those in power.]]>

The book is colored throughout by the Red Scare, as Jung seems to see the Communist countries as the most extreme examples of State, or impersonal group that yields power over the individual.

Religion is explored as is self-knowledge and the meaning of both in the context.

It was somewhat disappointing that the book offers little practical advice on how an individual can strengthen himself in the face of a strong state, or any kind of persuasive group, and it didn't spur as many insights as I had hoped. That said, the book is well worth it's weight, if only in how it encourages people to take care of their individuality and helps one separate from the masses, if only in thought.]]>

While a thread runs through the entire thing, the topics start at the tricks of advertising and salesmanship, segway from there into the harmful effects a negative mind can have, continues into ways one can use to improve one's mind and make it more positive, and ends with talk of future research.

At 960 pages, it's interesting at first how Clancy weaves together the different groups of characters and ends up with "us" and "them" in the end, but the terrorists' "plan" doesn't make any sense in the when everything comes to together. What I can only assume is supposed to be a diabolical twist in the end is thoroughly uninteresting.

It's hard to call the "good guys" good guys at this point. Operating outside the law, using methods at times that have been outlawed everywhere in the world due to their cruelty, all in the name of saving the US (read: the world) from fundamentalist terrorists. If it's meant to be an exploration of how much you need to become like the enemy to stop him, and the moral implications of that, it falls completely flat, as the "good guys" seem to be able to rationalize any action to the point where they feel nothing more than a momentary pang of guilt about them, no matter how cruel.

It is clear that the Rainbow Six way of dealing with terrorism is no longer as effective as it was before 9/11, but the alternative suggested in Clancy's recent books is terrifying; small, self-funded vigilante cells that murder people at home and abroad without due process.

All in all the storyline is predictable and uninteresting, the characters are boring and inhuman, and the political statement the book makes is frightening.

Again, the best I can say about it is that it's not as bad as "Teeth of the tiger".]]>

<![CDATA[Pathways to Bliss: Mythology and Personal Transformation]]> 35511
In Pathways to Bliss, Campbell examines this personal, psychological side of myth. Like his classic best-selling books Myths to Live By and The Power of Myth, Pathways to Bliss draws from Campbell's popular lectures and dialogues, which highlight his remarkable storytelling and ability to apply the larger themes of world mythology to personal growth and the quest for transformation. Here he anchors mythology's symbolic wisdom to the individual, applying the most poetic mythical metaphors to the challenges of our daily lives.

Campbell dwells on life's important questions. Combining cross-cultural stories with the teachings of modern psychology, he examines the ways in which our myths shape and enrich our lives and shows how myth can help each of us truly identify and follow our bliss.]]>
