Station Eleven 20170404 An audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization’s collapse—the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band’s existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.]]>

Life: An Exploded Diagram 10794589
Can love survive a lifetime? When working-class Clem Ackroyd falls for Frankie Mortimer, the gorgeous daughter of a wealthy local landowner, he has no hope that it can. After all, the world teeters on the brink of war, and bombs could rain down any minute over the bleak English countryside - just as they did seventeen years ago as his mother, pregnant with him, tended her garden. This time, Clem may not survive. Told in cinematic style by acclaimed writer Mal Peet, this brilliant coming-of-age novel is a gripping family portrait that interweaves the stories of three generations and the terrifying crises that define them. With its urgent sense of history, sweeping emotion, and winning young narrator, Mal Peet's latest is an unforgettable, timely exploration of life during wartime.]]>

In between chapters of Clem and Frankie racing to get their rocks off before the bombs start falling, and hilariously acute looks at Soviet and American strategic command, this book hares off down threads of lives connected to the leads, showing what was really at stake from a nuclear apocalypse.

A masterpiece, and I don't say that a lot. ]]>

Jack Glass 13235961 Golden Age SF meets Golden Age Crime in this British Science Fiction Award winner for best novel, from the author of Swiftly, New Model Army, and Yellow Blue Tibia

Jack Glass is the murderer—we know this from the start. Yet as this extraordinary novel unfolds, readers will be astonished to discover how he committed the murders and by the end of the book, their sympathies for the killer will be fully engaged. Riffing on the tropes of crime fiction (the country house murder, the locked room mystery) and imbued with the feel of golden age SF, this is another bravura performance from Roberts. Whatever games he plays with the genre, whatever questions he asks of the reader, Roberts never loses sight of the need to entertain. Filled with wonderfully gruesome moments and liberal doses of sly humor, this novel is built around three gripping HowDunnits that challenge notions of crime, punishment, power, and freedom.]]>

I don't review many books on here, but the Explorer warrants one because it's a combination of three things I really like - Elegant, expressive writing (with some cool turns of phrase), a fresh, insightful voice (Sounds wanky I know, but I can't think of a better way to put it.) and complex characters who feel like real people.

Also, it left you feeling something.

Two young friends and possibly incipient lovers find themselves on opposite sides of a struggle between authoritarianism and terror. The book goes to some pretty dark places, dealing with the themes of humanity, loss of self and the crime of 'only following orders'. Unlike other recent YA hits, it doesn't flinch from having its young leads do seriously morally questionable things.

All of which is delivered by a 1st person voice which is a fresh and sharp as a winter wind on the eyeball. I loved it.
