Honestly, I liked this book less than the last book. Perhaps it's because this book was grounded too much in the real world. I liked the setting of the first book, and the way de writer told the familiar stories through Loki's eyes. That setting and most of the characters were missing. Instead, we got a bit of teenage angst and drama. Also, Loki was (perhaps because of the situation) not his usual self. His voice, antics and humour was what I loved in the first book. Testament did not have enough of it, in my opinion.
I liked the book alright, but compared to Gospel Testament fell a bit flat.

Characters
- Rhen: After gradually getting fond of Rhen in the first book and, it was disapointing to see how much of his character arc went down the drain in the second. At the end of A Heart, I started to understand why he acted the way he did, but it was still such a disappointment to see that he seemed to become one-track minded, unyielding and downright cruel. Because I am afraid of giving spoilers, I'll only say that I did understand his motivations a bit better in A Vow but am not entirely satisfied with how things turned out with him.
- Harper: My favourite character in the entire series. And perhaps one of my favourite characters in all of the books that I have read the last five years. There is just something about her that draws me in. She was the one character who never disappointed me. She's fierce, determined, headstrong and stands for what she believes in. During the series, she really came into her own. She only needs to learn to think before she dives head first into a situation. But no one's perfect, and her flaws make her human.
- Grey: I know some people fell in love with him in the first book, but to me he never had such an appeal. I liked him alright as a side-character and would not have minded a chapter from his point of view every now and then. However, a second book focussing entirely on him as well as the third book giving him over a quarter of the screen/pagetime was too much for my taste. Neither did I like the direction his character development took. He was always a bit stoic and aloof, which fitted his position as a guard just fine. But the more the story progressed, the less the warmth that he does have shone through. What's more: he hardened and unlikeable for a big part of the story.
Lia Mara: I connected with her the least. There is just something about her that rubs me in the wrong way. When she first appeared, she keeps thinking "that is why my sister is heir" and that she would not be a good queen anyway. It deemed to me more like she was convincing herself of that than really believing that. It annoyed me. And her feelings of jealousy durng at one point did not endear her to me. I guess she's an okay character, but she pales by by comparison with some other characters.

Minor characters:
Zo: I love her devotion to Harper as well as their friendship.
Freya: she's the motherly figure that Harper needs after losing her own mom.
Tycho: just a genuine sweet and honest boy.
Lillith: not really a minor character, but no point of view. Hate her.

About the balance of characters I'd like to say: I disliked how much screen/pagetime Grey and Lia Mara seemed to get. They took up too much space in what I believe to be Harper and Rhen's story. I mean: it started with Rhen, Harper, the curse and their lovestory. It's THEIR story; they, their love, their struggles and their heartships should be central. Therefore, I felt a bit betrayed by the intrusion of Grey and Lia Mara, especially since they never connected with me the way Rhen and Harper did. At times, it seemed more like Grey was the hero of the story, and that is, in my honest opinion, not the way it should be.
It was, on the other hand, great to have point-of-views from Rhen and Harper again. I truly missed them in the second book. Their relationship was stlll one of the best points of the trilogy.

I did like that Rhen and Grey were able to work things out and relieved that all three of the original main characters survived. I would have preferred if both Rhen and Grey had ended up to be kings in their own right, supporting each other, being allies and so on. Rhen in Emberfall, Grey with Lia Mara in Shyl Shallow.
Also: I felt that the defeat of Lillith was a bit anticlimactic. It was very interesting that Rhen had to become the monster again. But I wanted them to work together a bit more. After reading A Curse so Dark and Lonely back in 2019 -and loving it to bits!- I finally got around to reading A Heart so Fierce and Broken and A Vow so Dark and Lonely. It took so long to read the two sequels because mediocre and disappointed reviews, especially of the first sequel. The slightly more positive reviews of A Vow gave me a bit of hope for the end of the series. Unfortunately, the books didn't really live up to that. In the following review, I'll tell you why I felt that way.

I loved this book. Beauty and the beast has always been my favourite fairy tale and therefore I was excited for aan adaption and this book did not disappoint.

Protagonist Harper is a wonderful character. She is determined, strong-willed and powerful in her own way. She's not perfect, but that makes her more realistic.

While the main character is Harper, you also read chapter's from Rhen's point of view. He is a multifaceted character who has some real character development over the course of the novel.

I also liked the fact that, even though the most of the story takes place in a castle that is almost deserted, the writer didn't forget that there are, by definition, subjects in a kingdom and these subjects will feel the consequences of an absent royal family. It was clear that this book aims at a teenage audience. The language is quite simple and feelings of jealousy and childish grudges take up a good part of the book. But we'll, the main characters are teenagers and, since the series is 15 books long in total, the series will mature with its characters. And I admit that it probably didn't help that I read it along with a Robin Hobb trilogy, which are known for its complex worldbuilding, careful plotting and rich vocabulary.
