The Witch of Willow Hall 41101530 “It was the Bishop boy who started it all…

Boston, 1811: The Salem Witch Trials are over one hundred years in the past, and America is a changed place. Lydia Montrose is a young girl, enraged by the cruel boy who torments her. When she confronts him in the street, she draws a disbelieving crowd, and she cannot quite remember what she's done.

Ten years later, Lydia finds herself in a carriage bound for the rural New Oldbury, Massachusetts, her family fleeing Boston in the wake of a scandal connected to her older sister, Catherine, and her own engagement to a promising young man abruptly broken. The stately Willow Hall, which Mr. Montrose built as a summer retreat for his family, is now the only home the Montroses can have.

Lydia resents that she's lost everything. But her resentment turns to disquiet when it becomes apparent that Willow Hall hides dark secrets that no one in the Montrose family could have predicted, like the ominous messages Lydia keeps receiving: “You attract them. Prepare. And Mr. Montrose's handsome business partner, John Barrett, seems to begrudge that Mr. Montrose has brought his family with him to Willow Hall.

When whatever lurks in the house and its surrounding woods does the unthinkable, Lydia knows she is the only one who can stop it. Summoning powers she barely understands, Lydia must engage the forces around her to keep her family safe, while protecting the blossoming love she has with John who has secrets of his own.

An ode to Put the Damn Guns Down, this is New York Times bestselling author Jason Reynolds’s electrifying novel that takes place in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother.

A cannon. A strap.
A piece. A biscuit.
A burner. A heater.
A chopper. A gat.
A hammer
A tool
for RULE

Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he?

As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator?

Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES.

And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an END…if Will gets off that elevator.

Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.]]>

“Bone snapped and flesh parted as hot blood spewed out from a jagged wound. THAT, friends, is the first sentence. And it successfully it got me excited.

Cons:
I present to you the reasons why the book took me almost 6 months to complete.
While the book started out strongly, it went downhill really quickly.
Rezkin’s personality lacked depth. Yes, I understand that that was the intention towards the beginning, but his character did not progress with this (LONG) book.
I didn’t particularly care for any of the secondary characters either. They all felt like generic, cookie cutter characters.
It felt to me like Rezkin’s borderline inhuman abilities were given to him simply for the sake of convenience. At one point, he has blueprints memorised. WHICH CRAZY SCHOOLS MAKE YOU MEMORISE THE MOST FREAKING RANDOM BLUEPRINTS?
He also singlehandedly takes on 15 well-trained warriors and is barely breaks a sweat. I could go on with these examples all day, but you get the idea.
The female characters had no substance whatsoever. No, I do not expect them to be powerful warriors, but I do think they should have more depth to their personalities and NOT ONLY EXIST SOLELY TO SWOON AND HAVE PETTY FIGHTS OVER THE (conveniently very good-looking) MAIN CHARACTER. deep breath, Zara.
Having finished the book, I still don’t know what the plot is supposed to be. Hence why I was bored and didn’t retain any information from large chunks of the book while reading.

Hence why I was bored and didn’t retain any information from large chunks of the book while reading.
...those are all of my words.

<![CDATA[Sleeping Giants (Themis Files, #1)]]> 25955353 From Book 1: A page-turning debut in the tradition of Michael Crichton, World War Z, and The Martian, Sleeping Giants is a thriller fueled by an earthshaking mystery—and a fight to control a gargantuan power.

A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.

Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved—its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Its carbon dating defies belief; military reports are redacted; theories are floated, then rejected.

But some can never stop searching for answers.

Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history’s most perplexing discovery—and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

Praise for Sleeping Giants

“Reminiscent of The Martian and World War Z, Sleeping Giants is a luminous conspiracy yarn that shoots for (and lands among) the stars.—Pierce Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising

“As high-concept as it is, Sleeping Giants is a thriller through and through. . . . Not only is Sleeping Giants one of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory, it’s a smart demonstration of how science fiction can honor its traditions and reverse-engineer them at the same time.—Nʸ

“Neuvelweaves a complex tapestry with ancient machinery buried in the Earth, shadow governments, and geopolitical conflicts. Butthe most surprising thing about the book may just be how compelling the central characters are in the midst of these larger-than-life concepts. . . . I can’t stop thinking about it.Chicago Review of Books

“First-time novelist Sylvain Neuvel does a bold, splashy cannonball off the high dive with Sleeping Giants. It bursts at the seams with big ideas and the questions they spawnHow much human life is worth sacrificing in the pursuit of scientific progress? Can humanity be trusted with weapons of ultimate destruction? And the biggest: Are we alone? But all that really matters is that this book is a sheer blast from start to finish. I haven’t had this much fun reading in ages.—Blake Crouch, author of Dark Matter and the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy

“A remarkable debut . . . Reminiscent of Max Brooks’s World War Z, the story’s format effectively builds suspense.]]>

Pros:
Alien sci-fi isn’t usually my cup of tea, but this book is not full-on, intense alien sci-fi like I was initially expecting.
The format is different, and it’s a much welcome change. It’s mainly told through interviews, with a few file reports in between.
^ That made it a quick read, which my reading challenge appreciates.
some of the reveals genuinely shocked me and the pace really picks up towards the end.
Kara. And her sass and sarcasm and issues with everything. that’s all.
Also the anonymous interviewer. I know virtually nothing about him but. He’s still my favourite. Here’s why:
“Do I make myself clear?
—As always, my dear Robert, you are the epitome of clarity. Empty threats aside, my point still holds.

Need I say more?
I don’t have a natural affinity for science. This is a fact I’ve slowly and begrudgingly come to accept (okay I might’ve actually dropped everything science as soon as it wasn’t mandatory at school and never looked back, but still). But the science-orientated explanations were done in a way that was understandable for even my non-sciency brain.
THE ENDING. Really Mr. Author? I mean it delivered the shock factor for sure, but talk about a cliffhanger.
It was a debut novel. A very good debut novel.
The audiobook has a full cast and is excellent. Would highly recommend.

Cons:
I wish the book had more character development.
...that’s pretty much it. I don’t have anymore cons and am just writing this point so that I don’t have one con listed. But no more complaints (actually, there probably are somem more that my sleep-deprived brain is forgetting at the moment).

Wonder (Wonder, #1) 23302416
You can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.

August Pullman wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things. He eats ice cream. He plays on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside.

But Auggie is far from ordinary. Ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go.

Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?

Narrated by Auggie and the people around him whose lives he touches forever, Wonder is a funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.]]>

Owen's only refuge is the sprawling, isolated pecan orchard he works at after school, owned by a man named Gus who has his own secrets--and in some ways seems to know Owen better than he knows himself. Saints and Misfits 31123249
There are three kinds of people in my world:

1. Saints, those special people moving the world forward. Sometimes you glaze over them. Or, at least, I do. They’re in your face so much, you can’t see them, like how you can’t see your nose.

2. Misfits, people who don’t belong. Like me—the way I don’t fit into Dad’s brand-new family or in the leftover one composed of Mom and my older brother, Mama’s-Boy-Muhammad.

Also, there’s Jeremy and me. Misfits. Because although, alliteratively speaking, Janna and Jeremy sound good together, we don’t go together. Same planet, different worlds.

But sometimes worlds collide and beautiful things happen, right?

3. Monsters. Well, monsters wearing saint masks, like in Flannery O’Connor’s stories.

Like the monster at my mosque.

People think he’s holy, untouchable, but nobody has seen under the mask.

Except me.]]>

The Serpent King 22752127 ASIN B00ZNE17D2

Dill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life—at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes, and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father’s extreme faith and very public fall from grace.

The only antidote to all this venom is his friendship with fellow outcasts Travis and Lydia. But as they are starting their senior year, Dill feels the coils of his future tightening around him. The end of high school will lead to new beginnings for Lydia, whose edgy fashion blog is her ticket out of their rural Tennessee town. And Travis is happy wherever he is thanks to his obsession with the epic book series Bloodfall and the fangirl who may be turning his harsh reality into real-life fantasy. Dill’s only escapes are his music and his secret feelings for Lydia—neither of which he is brave enough to share. Graduation feels more like an ending to Dill than a beginning. But even before then, he must cope with another ending—one that will rock his life to the core.

Debut novelist Jeff Zentner provides an unblinking and at times comic view of the hard realities of growing up in the Bible Belt, and an intimate look at the struggles to find one’s true self in the wreckage of the past.]]>

Vicious (Villains, #1) 40874032 A masterful tale of ambition, jealousy, desire, and superpowers.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn't automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.]]>

Pumpkinheads 40864790 In Pumpkinheads author Rainbow Rowell and artist Faith Erin Hicks have teamed up to create this tender and hilarious story about two irresistible teens discovering what it means to leave behind a place―and a person―with no regrets.

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .

Jude must risk venturing back into the treacherous Faerie Court, and confront her lingering feelings for Cardan, if she wishes to save her sister. But Elfhame is not as she left it. War is brewing. As Jude slips deep within enemy lines she becomes ensnared in the conflict’s bloody politics.

And, when a dormant yet powerful curse is unleashed, panic spreads throughout the land, forcing her to choose between her ambition and her humanity

10 Blind Dates 43885673
Heartbroken, Sophie flees to her grandparents' house, where the rest of her boisterous extended family is gathered for the holiday. That's when her nonna devises a (not so) brilliant plan: Over the next ten days, Sophie will be set up on ten different blind dates by different family members. Like her sweet cousin Sara, who sets her up with a hot guy at an exclusive underground party. Or her crazy aunt Patrice, who signs Sophie up for a lead role in a living nativity. With a boy who barely reaches her shoulder. And a screaming baby.

When Griffin turns up unexpectedly and begs for a second chance, Sophie feels more confused than ever. Because maybe, just maybe, she's started to have feelings for someone else . . . Someone who is definitely not available.

This is going to be the worst Christmas break ever... or is it?]]>

River of Ink 25990703
But when Kalinga Magha, a ruthless prince with a formidable army, arrives upon Lanka's shores, Asanka's world is changed beyond imagining. Violent, hubristic and unpredictable, Magha usurps the throne, laying waste to all who stand in his way. Under his terrifying rule, nothing in the city is left untouched and, like many of his fellow citizens, Asanka retreats into the shadows, hoping to pass unnoticed by the tyrant. But it seems his new master is a lover of poetry...

To Asanka's horror, Magha tasks him with the translation of an epic Sanskrit poem, a tale of Gods and nobles, love and revenge, which the king believes will have a civilising effect on his subjects, soothing their discontent and snuffing out the fires of rebellion he suspects are igniting across the island.

Asanka has always believed that poetry makes nothing happen, but as each new chapter he writes is disseminated through the land and lines on the page become cries in the street, his belief and his loyalties are challenged. And, as Magha circles ever closer to the things Asanka treasures most, the poet will discover that true power lies not at the point of a sword, but in the tip of a pen.]]>

The Handmaid's Tale 45864574
The story is told through the eyes of Offred, one of the unfortunate Handmaids under the new social order. In condensed but eloquent prose, by turns cool-eyed, tender, despairing, passionate, and wry, she reveals to us the dark corners behind the establishment’s calm facade, as certain tendencies now in existence are carried to their logical conclusions. The Handmaid’s Tale is funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing. It is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and a tour de force. It is Margaret Atwood at her best.

Daisy Jones & The Six 40597810 Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.]]>

<![CDATA[The Wise Man's Fear (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2)]]> 1215032 There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.

My name is Kvothe.
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me.

So begins the tale of a hero told from his own point of view a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man's Fear, an escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe uncovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's Road.

All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. Along the way, Kvothe is put on trial by the legendary Adem mercenaries, is forced to reclaim the honor of the Edema Ruh, and travels into the Fae realm. There he meets Felurian, the faerie woman no man can resist, and who no man has ever survived ... until Kvothe.

In The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

The central conflict was family-orientated and that’s my one true weakness. And from the perspective of a Taiwanese-American girl who is struggling to find her place in two different cultures and two different worlds, it was so refreshing. I’m still sceptical about certain directions in which the author took the plot and the main conflict. It doesn’t have the same page-turning effect that the previous books had, either.

But at the same time, I really enjoyed a lot of the politics. The world has evolved so imperfectly, yet so realistically, and I’m 100% here for it.

And I know, I know, there’s still more to come, so I’m not going to dwell on this too much for now.

The writing, however, was STUNNINGLY well done. The new characters have a lot of depth and I’m already growing attached.

But here’s the thing: when series get extended, I am always, always going to be hesitant. I therefore went in with lowered expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. It was an enjoyable read, and I’m tentatively hopeful towards the sequel. ]]>

When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.]]>

The Lost Metal (Mistborn, #7) 23947089 Return to #1 New York Times bestseller Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn world of Scadrial as its second era, which began with The Alloy of Law, comes to its earth-shattering conclusion in The Lost Metal.

For years, frontier lawman turned big-city senator Waxillium Ladrian has hunted the shadowy organization the Set—with his late uncle and his sister among their leaders—since they started kidnapping people with the power of Allomancy in their bloodlines. When Detective Marasi Colms and her partner, Wayne, find stockpiled weapons bound for the Outer City of Bilming, this opens a new lead. Conflict between the capital, Elendel, and the Outer Cities only favors the Set, and their tendrils now reach to the Elendel Senate—whose corruption Wax and his wife, Steris, have sought to expose—and Bilming is even more entangled.

After Wax discovers a new type of explosive that can unleash unprecedented destruction and realizes that the Set must already have it, an immortal kandra serving Scadrial's god, Harmony, reveals that Bilming has fallen under the influence of another god: Trell, worshipped by the Set. I still think it’s best to go into Era 2 without sky-high expectations, but the main mystery was fun albeit a bit predictable.

However, I wasn’t at all expecting this book to leave SO MANY hints to the Cosmere as a whole. That was a highlight for me. Coppermind says that this book apparently takes place AFTER Stormlight #5 (?), so that particular scene towards the end [spoilers removed] makes me all the more excited to see how it all links up at the end.

Steris got the development that she deserved, Wayne is a star, I like Marasi more now, and I'm hesitant and incredibly baffled by the ending, but it's ensured that I read Mistborn: A Secret History soon.

A low point was, of course, the scene that was pretty much The Deathly Hallows in Mistborn. I’m just…not a fan. Of [spoilers removed]

But on a final, more positive note, the next book looks like it'll be so political because of Wax leaving absolute chaos in his wake, and I look forward to reading it (hopefully soon).

Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds.

When family obligations forced Waxillium Ladrian to forsake the frontier lands and return to the metropolis of his birth to take his place as head of a noble House, he little imagined that the crime-fighting skills acquired during twenty years in the dusty plains would be just as applicable in the big city. He soon learned that there too, just being a talented Twinborn one who can use both Allomancy and Feruchemy, the dominant magical modes on Scadrial would not suffice.

This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society will now face its first test by terrorism and assassination, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax, his eccentric sidekick Wayne, and brilliant, beautiful young Marasi, now officially part of the constabulary, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife can stop Scadrial’s progress in its tracks.]]>
383 Brandon Sanderson 147320822X ℨαrα 4 Things I liked:
Era 2 is an ideal light, fun read. While it’s very different from era 1, it’s a good time, a short and easy read.
 Wayne’s humour is genuinely hilarious.
 So is MeLaan’s.
Do yourself a favour and read these books just for them.
The stakes were raised, even though they’re still fairly contained.
I find the way in which the magic system has evolved alongside time and technological advancements to be SO fascinating.
Who would’ve thought that mistborn, steampunk and western mysteries would work so well together.
A flawed, but still likeable main character.

Things I disliked:
The spoiler tag contains spoilers for Era 1, but not Alloy of Law. [spoilers removed]
I kind of saw a couple of the plot twists coming.
I feel like, if anything, these books could’ve been longer. To me the characters felt like they could have been developed more and given more depth, and the plot more complex. I’ve seen a lot of these plot devices used before.

Young Kelsea Raleigh was raised in hiding after the death of her mother, Queen Elyssa, far from the intrigues of the royal Keep and in the care of two devoted servants who pledged their lives to protect her. Growing up in a cottage deep in the woods, Kelsea knows little of her kingdom's haunted past . . . or that its fate will soon rest in her hands.

Long ago, Kelsea's forefathers sailed away from a decaying world to establish a new land free of modern technology. Three hundred years later, this feudal society has divided into three fearful nations who pay duties to a fourth: the powerful Mortmesne, ruled by the cunning Red Queen. Now, on Kelsea's nineteenth birthday, the tattered remnants of the Queen's Guard—loyal soldiers who protect the throne—have appeared to escort the princess on a perilous journey to the capital to ascend to her rightful place as the new Queen of the Tearling.

Though born of royal blood and in possession of the Tear sapphire, a jewel of immense power and magic, Kelsea has never felt more uncertain of her ability to rule. But the shocking evil she discovers in the heart of her realm will precipitate an act of immense daring, throwing the entire kingdom into turmoil—and unleashing the Red Queen's vengeance. A cabal of enemies with an array of deadly weapons, from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic, plots to destroy her. But Kelsea is growing in strength and stealth, her steely resolve earning her loyal allies, including the Queen's Guard, led by the enigmatic Lazarus, and the intriguing outlaw known simply as "the Fetch."

<![CDATA[The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1)]]> 10063939 From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings, Book One of the Stormlight Archive begins an incredible new saga of epic proportion.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.

One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.

Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar's niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan's motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.

Speak again the ancient oaths:

Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.

and return to men the Shards they once bore.

The Knights Radiant must stand again.]]>

—ĔĔĔĔĔĔĔĔĔĔĔĔĔ

Plot:
From the very beginning, it feels huge, it feels epic. However, it is definitely slow towards the beginning, and it’s a lot, so it may take up to 200 pages for you to feel immersed.

Even though the plot largely revolves around the magic system, I barely know the intricacies about how it works and how deep it goes.I also could not tell you what the main plot of this book is about. Keeping in mind that this is only book 1 to a 10 book series, for every answer that you get, you’re left with 3 more questions in its place. But it WORKS. It really feels like the entire plot of this book is only the tip of the iceberg.

That being said, I wasn’t bored. The plot really REALLY picks up, and the last 250 pages are absolute chaos. In typical Brandon Sanderson style, the plot snowballs until you’re hit with an explosive ending that leaves you gasping out loud and questioning the meaning of life.

Characters:
My main reason for not growing bored at all was the characters. I genuinely can’t recall the last time I was this emotionally invested in a character’s story probably with Mistborn because it’s brilliant. It felt like I was experiencing things with them. And during the course of the book, you see so much of growth and development from all of them.

And the magic-orientated questions surrounding the 3 main characters of this book is very interesting, and I’m incredibly curious to see where they’ll lead. However, only 2 out of the 3 main characters cross paths towards the very end of the book

Kaladin:
This kid is so tragic that he made me teary multiple times. His scenes were my favourite for the most part, and learning of his back story in snippets is just. so. sad. Seeing Kaladin hit rock bottom and fight his way back up [spoilers removed] umm who has that sort of resilience?? Amazing amazing amazing poor tortured soul, he is.

He also has some medical experience and he really struggled with the idea of whether caring for your patients is a good or bad thing, and when to hold on and when to let go. I can’t speak fom personal experience, but it seems to be a very relatable and very real struggle. And throughout the course of the book, he had to ask himself tough questions and make hard decisions.

“You’ll grow calluses.
And this is a good thing? Kal thought, another tear trickling down his cheek. You have to learn when to care…and when to let go.

[spoilers removed]

Dalinar:
I love Dalinar’s values, and the fact that he doesn’t let his position get to his head. He doesn’t think of himself —or his sons above soldiers or turn his nose up at hard work.

I’m not the biggest fan of his romantic subplot. At all. Because reasons. Then again, there are many many questions surrounding his past, so I shall try to keep an open mind as my opinion may be subject to change.

Also his [spoilers removed] are epic. Sosososo many questions.

Shallan:
So Shallan is certainly a very interesting character, and I’m very very intrigued about her backstory [spoilers removed] but I wouldn’t necessarily say that I like her just yet. I’m not quite sure how I feel about her, but I understand where her motivations came from. She makes very questionable decisions, she makes mistakes, but you can’t exactly be mad at her for some of them, you just can’t.

Syl:
Syl is not a main character, but she’s a cutie and I LOVE her and want to talk about her. So...I’m going to talk about her.

Syl is a spren (picture: Tinkerbell to Kaladin’s Peter Pan, but better). Syl’s scenes almost never failed to make me smile. And her simple outlook on emotions and motivations and what it means to be human and life are so thought-provoking. The world needs more spren people like Syl.

“Nothing else is like that—animals act alike, and all spren are, in a sense, virtually the same individual. There’s harmony in that. But not in you—it seems that no two of you can agree on anything. All the world does as it is supposed to, except for humans. Maybe that’s why you so often want to kill each other.

Honourable mentions to Wit (because reasons), Rock (and his stew), and Jasnah (because I started out not liking her very much but she quickly grew on me).

Themes:
Most prominently there’s the theme of honour, doing what’s right and there being no black and white. It might sometimes seem idealistic, but it’s also hopeful.

“Somebody has to start, son. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right. If nobody starts, then others cannot follow.

I also really love how the author once again brought religious beliefs —or the lack thereof into the book. He does it in such a way that doesn’t discriminate or come across as preaching. Heck, he doesn’t even show bias towards any views, and it doesn’t seem prominent in the plot. This isn’t easy to accomplish.

And also, I wouldn’t say it’s a trigger warning exactly —I’m not sure but be aware that suicide is mentioned and does mildly come into play with two of the main characters plot lines.

“So why fight? I told myself that I would try one last time. But I failed before I began. There’s no saving them.
“Doesn’t the fight itself mean anything?
“Not if you’re destined to die.
…]
“Death comes, they whispered. Death comes to all. But life comes first. Cherish it.
Death is the destination. But the journey, that is life.

Enjoyment:
Well, I read this in just over 48 hours so this is proof that I need to get a life thoroughly enjoyed it. If you’re new to epic fantasy and it’s your first Sanderson novel, maaaayybe put this series on hold for now and opt for something more manageable, such as his Mistborn series. But if you’re a fan of epic fantasy, please read this and love this and scream about this ASAP. Also, read Mistborn if you haven’t yet, please & thank you.

I’m reading this so that I’m officially no longer a fake Brandon Sanderson fan.

The Book of M 40204157 Set in a dangerous near future world, The Book of M tells the captivating story of a group of ordinary people caught in an extraordinary catastrophe who risk everything to save the ones they love. It is a sweeping debut that illuminates the power that memories have not only on the heart, but on the world itself.

One afternoon at an outdoor market in India, a man’s shadow disappears—an occurrence science cannot explain. He is only the first. The phenomenon spreads like a plague, and while those afflicted gain a strange new power, it comes at a horrible price: the loss of all their memories.

Ory and his wife Max have escaped the Forgetting so far by hiding in an abandoned hotel deep in the woods. Their new life feels almost normal, until one day Max’s shadow disappears too.

Knowing that the more she forgets, the more dangerous she will become to Ory, Max runs away. But Ory refuses to give up the time they have left together. Desperate to find Max before her memory disappears completely, he follows her trail across a perilous, unrecognizable world, braving the threat of roaming bandits, the call to a new war being waged on the ruins of the capital, and the rise of a sinister cult that worships the shadowless.

As they journey, each searches for answers: for Ory, about love, about survival, about hope; and for Max, about a new force growing in the south that may hold the cure.]]>

I will say right off the bat that this is not going to be the book for everyone. It is extremely slow-paced at times, and for more than half of the book, there isn’t a single likeable character. I think it just depends on how immersed in the atmosphere and how intrigued by the mystery you are.

For me, I found the setting and atmosphere wholly immersive. I also thoroughly enjoyed the writing, which felt so authentic, but I can see how it might be a drawback for some.

And while Lib was completely unlikeable at the beginning, her character undergoes so much of development, and I thought that it was very well done. By the end, I CARED. I was so invested. And worried. Very worried for her. Which is a pretty big feat considering that this isn’t the longest of books.

But like I said, the book does NOT coddle you. There’s some very disturbing content, and while I am still getting over some of it, I appreciated it. And I look forward to reading more from Emma Donoghue in the near future.]]>

I can genuinely see why so many people adore this book. It’s incredibly well-written, there’s an element of mystery that keeps you turning the pages, and I’ve never seen anything quite like the setting and premise before.

One aspect that I really loved was how flawed and unlikable, yet still compelling Evelyn’s character was. And seeing not only how she saw her actions at the time of carrying them out, as well as years into the future. She actually doesn’t regret much. Uh...how?? I need to know the secret because I cringe at myself from 3 months ago.

And the twist at the end didn’t let me down. It felt like good reasoning for why things played out the way they did. And the not-so-perfect ending. I personally love imperfect endings.

So why it fell short for me simply comes down to the fact that we’re following celebrities who are living their lives in old Hollywood. It’s just not my cup of tea, and that’s all, really. But because of all of the praise, I think I deluded myself into thinking that I would enjoy it regardless? However, I would’ve thought that I’d hate reading an entire book about it, but I didn’t. It was a fun read, but for me, it was just missing something to push it a bit further up.

396 Roshani Chokshi ℨαrα 2 KNEW, going in, to lower my gosh darn expectations. But you see, my subconscious is rude and couldn't care less about my wishes, hence my sad, sad rating.

My complaints can be summed up in two points:

1. I STILL do not fully understand the magic system. After completing the entire book. But especially towards the beginning, there was such a lack of world-building that I just found myself being totally confused by. If a book isn't a sequel, dear authors, please explain to the readers how the world works.

2. To me, the book lacked character development and depth. I just didn't feel invested in their storylines at all. They're not unlikeable but perhaps that would've been better, because at least that would have evoked some sort of emotion from me. But no, I was tragically indifferent towards them.
Speaking of characters, I also missed the presence of deep, complex and menacing antagonists.

So between not caring about the characters, plot or world, there wasn't much left for me to be invested in.

But on a more positive note:

The writing itself is good. The author is able to paint a vivid image of the setting in your mind, finding a sweet spot with descriptions and detail. The diverse cast doesn't feel forced, but they're still very much present, which I appreciated.

Yes, I am aware that I did not talk about the heists. That is because I finished the book a whole 28 hours ago and I find myself forgetting them because my attention kept on drifting while reading the book. Whoops.

Chakraborty—an imaginative alchemy of The Golem and the Jinni, The Grace of Kings, and Uprooted, in which the future of a magical Middle Eastern kingdom rests in the hands of a clever and defiant young con artist with miraculous healing gifts.

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of eighteenth-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive.

But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced toquestion all she believes. For the warrior tells her an extraordinary tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circlingbirds of preyare not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass—a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.

In Daevabad, within gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.

Note: I haven’t read Moby Dick and only have a vague idea of its plot, so I had no true point of reference while reading this book.

Pros:
The writing style is so completely unique and one of the biggest highlights for me. Writing from the perspective of a whale allows Patrick Ness to get creative with his prose and style of storytelling.
I’m someone who loves symbolism and analysing and interpreting deeper meanings in books. This one has a lot of that, and I was in my element.
I found dynamic between whales and man truly fascinating. So many parallels can be drawn between these fictitious societies and our world.
Dark illustrations in a non-middle grade book.
The interior of this book is so beautiful. My eyes have been blessed by Rovina Cai’s illustrations.
Seriously, I could stare at them all day. They add a whole new dimension to the reading experience.
!!!THE ENDING. The final pages after the climax of the book were so amazingly beautifully superbly astonishingly breathtakingly I’m running out of adjectives brilliant. It is poetry. It’s honestly worth reading the whole book for that.

Cons:
IT ENDED TOO QUICKLY (I know that this is a good thing but I need cons to balance this out okay).
The premise may not be everyone’s cup of tea as it’s quite peculiar.
The middle didn’t fully capture my attention and I found myself struggling to concentrate.

QUOTES (this book is a landmine for quotes):

The middle didn’t fully capture my attention and I found myself struggling to concentrate.
