The credentials of the author were another draw for me to read the book (he ran the popular Fake Steve Jobs handle and was a writer of the hit HBO series 'Silicon Valley'). Overall as a cautionary tale from an insider the book was a quick read.

Our family has been following a New Year ritual for decades. We call it our annual pilgrimage. It involves going to a physical bookstore and each person buys at least one book of their choice. Our nephew from Bangalore has happily joined in this for the past few years after we moved here from Mumbai. He even recommends the best bookshop among the many in Church Street that we should visit.

Crisp investigative thriller. Considering that this was the debut in the mid-1930s of a detective series by Japanese author Seishi Yokomizo, it was rather good. It does have what has been a pet peeve with the few Hercules Poirot and Sherlock Holmes murder mysteries I have read, namely, that the narrative did not permit the reader to come close to solving the mystery because things that happened in the background or evidence or observations would be revealed in the end by the detective.

The typical British humor, expected from a long-time columnist of The Guardian, is a bonus. There are paragraphs and sections in this book that felt like a dagger pierced into uncomfortable zones where subconscious and not so subconscious self-delusions and rationalizations are hidden, to be brought out when necessary for safety. But the self-depreciating tone and language with which such violence is inflicted by Burkeman made me laugh out loud more than a couple of times.

Almost all the important points made in the book have been encountered by me in various other books but the marshalling of perspectives and applying to the current context where everyone from teenage students to corporate honchos to artists and teachers is grappling with To Do lists and conflicting advice on finding one's passion and adopting extreme productivity hacks, is the unique value of this book. The principles of stoicism popularized by the recent crop of young self-help authors, Zen and other Buddhist teachings, yoga and meditative practices, the slow movement, the paradox of getting less things done in the quest for getting more (or, even worse, all) things done, focus and deep work, these are all covered in a non-preachy tone, pointing out the limitations and challenges many of us face in consistently applying them without denying the value of such approaches.

In multiple places the argument builds up to "And then what?" It is a question that can be intimidating or liberating for many to ask whenever they think they have a known personal target or precondition for feeling contented.

This is a crime thriller that just has a variety of criminals as its characters, all in one Shinkansen train. The author introduces them one at a time in the initial chapters, but his cutting observations and tantalizing flashbacks hooks the reader immediately. The plot moves as fast as the bullet train on which all events transpire. Along with the misunderstandings, kidnapping, murder, and mayhem that is going on, there is humour. I can't explain how a crime-ridden action story can also elicit laugh out loud reaction but that is the genius of this book. One of the criminals on the train is introduced as the world's unluckiest assassin! And he is. He himself and some people around him talk about Murphy's Law, and all kinds of absurd setbacks occur to him. One of the criminals is a psychopath and pages devoted to his thoughts and actions are rather dark.

All in all, anyone who likes crime novels, will find this a satisfying read with a very different flavour.

Fuelled by a surge of migration to cities, the country's growth appears to be defined by urbanisation and by its growing, prosperous middle class. It is also defined by progressive and liberal young Indians, who vote beyond the constraints of identity, and paradoxically, by an unchecked population explosion and rising crimes against women. In 2020, the annual population growth was down to under 1 per cent. Only thirty-one of hundred Indians live in a city today and just 5 per cent live outside the city of their birth.

As recently as 2016, only 4 per cent of young, married respondents in a survey said their spouse belonged to a different caste group. Over 45 per cent of voters said in a pre-2014 election survey that it was important to them that a candidate of their own caste wins elections in their constituency. A large share of reported sexual assaults across India are actually consensual relationships criminalised by parents. And staggeringly, spending more than Rs 8,500 a month puts you in the top 5 per cent of urban India.

Standup comedy and math--what a combination of interests and talent! The word math might scare off some people but this book is mostly a superb collection of fascinating stories involving numbers and measurements (bridge collapse, air accidents, election results, Excel date and rounding off quirks). There is plenty of wisdom about testing, error prevention, problem root cause analysis, and human nature. And everything comes with witty puns and remarks. A unique package of delight.

Anyone familiar with the disaster that was the textile industry shutdown in the 1980s, which changed the city called Bombay permanently in many different ways, will relate to many of the characters and settings in this novel. The author has a unique style of moving across time and background stories of people. At first it felt a bit abrupt then one settled into the rhythm of the storytelling and looked forward to knowing the layered past of a housemaid, the liftman, the ambitious young boyfriend, the reluctant inheritor of a rubber estate... The only quibble was in the last few pages this structure could have been avoided and the narrative could have tightly focused on the denouement.

Lovable characters with believable characteristics, more logical people in a romance fiction story than one ever gets to read or watch in Bollywood/Hollywood, even the so-called "bad people" characters are fleshed out in a balanced way, and above everything else, what I loved and got consistently stunned by were the cutting observations on human nature and the games we all play, including nice ones.

The history, sights, and smells of Lalbaug-Parel neighbourhood are vividly painted as the backdrop to the events of the plot. I am not even sure if plot is the right word for this gently moving story of recovering from a breakup. The relationships of individuals with each other and with the societal frames they operate in--that seems to be the focus here. And not in any ponderous way. Though there is no overt attempt at humour, more than once the one-liners made me laugh with admiration.
