I am quite stingy with five star reviews and think it’s pretty hilarious that this book is getting five stars, but it absolutely is! It is awkward and surprising and tender and weird and complicated and real and every other adjective that describes the breadth of life. The story invites us in to once again see that things are not always as they appear. Taking the obvious realization that there’s always more to the story, but using the most unlikely characters to provide inside to how our stories can start in incredibly different places, but the experience and feelings, connecting them are all so similar.

It’s smart, and witty, and so meaningful. I knew nothing about this book or author prior to reading and I am a therapist. With that said, I had lots of counter transference (feelings) reading this. Accepting the author’s account as her genuine experience and also acknowledging that is not a text book on sociopathy- leaves lots of questions. I wonder if other variables are at play here that might explain the authors limitations with empathy and emotion especially with her portrayal of her mother’s attunement and support- which makes me wonder if the lack of (reported) trauma, if she might have been neurodivergent with a vin diagram that crosses over with a personality disorder. Regardless- I’m not a huge fan of labels in the context of mental health because they are so limiting. I do like that it brings up a demographic that gets tossed into a category without much discussion of change.

Unfortunately, it was not. I have read Tessa Bailey before and enjoyed the lighthearted romcom feel of the story, but Jesus. I ’t count the number of times I was thinking “this is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard�.

I listened to it on audio, which I’m sure made it worse because the narrator made the gross male character even more disgusting with the blunt flat tone of voice used. Tessa Bailey chose this narrator� I’m really starting to question how she’s doing. What happened?

, If I don’t enjoy a book, I give it three stars and move on. The level that I detested this book required I allow myself the gratification of at least talking about how terrible it was.

The relationship lacked any depth at all. The sex scenes were random and just ew! The conversations were weird. The references to diabetes were melodramatic. In reality, if a man acted like this guy, the conflict that would result in every relationship around him would be a life of complete dumpster fires. But this story essentially depicts that this really terrible man is miraculously changed by sex with a fan. He talks about her like she is mother Theresa. The dolly llama. The Lord Jesus Christ himself. Everything she says, and does is like a profound epiphany of wonder that no other human could ever exhibit. About golf. and his ass. I am not even exaggerating.
